EPISODE 6: Everything you need to know about the COP process ft. Paddy Loughman.
In this conversation Clare interviews Paddy Loughman about the COP process. How does it work? How is it not working, and importantly what could it do by its design and what is it structurally incapable of? If fossil fuels and so called energy companies are really capturing the international process so completely, and this is really all about systems of power, both energy power and political power, what can we learn about this that will help us think ahead. Paddy’s personal experience in the U.K. climate champions team from Glasgow helps us to think about the first hand reflections and experiences and what might further the thinking around what international cooperation could be, or what could be done that hasn’t yet been tried. Hopefully this is a helpful exploration before a further discussion later in the week where Clare and Charlie will come together to reflect on this years conference in Dubai.

Brilliant conversation, serious and sad yet with a number of new angles which are much needed, geopolítica, game theory and much more. Huge love for your honesty and integrity. Even if we did actually go down at least I felt dignity and respect for so many fellow humans. We still have no alternative but to rebel for Life

34:00+ Clare sums it up perfectly. In the game; we are in a dystopian culture that is run by those who truly do not care about the masses and individual rights but will clip wings off those who question their authority. The courts do not help whatsoever cure this disparity of reason and class They have just become entertainment for the masses. The Murdoch empire and subsequently tabloid culture have adhered to that form of story telling because it is simply more profitable.

1:13:16 "what can we build that's ours?" well if what is contained on our personal property is ours, and the problem is oil and gas, and renewable energies are key to mitigating climate change, then that leaves us with renewable energy infrastructure on our personal property. solar is cheaper than ever. i'm afraid either we continue the war of words w/elites to do the work or we do it ourselves. love ya.

Merry Christmas to all Rebels. Wishing you a thoroughly miserable fossil fuels free day.

O.ooo... Celebrieties... Those are most often the ones with enourmous emissions. Top 1-5% of the richest that produce huge personal emissions. And their companies and other actions creates even more emissions. Don't fall in that trap. Influential people, yea, but most often totally corrupted by their surroundings and from the monetary benefits they gain. They don't really want a corruption investigations put on themselves, so this could be the way to force them to do beneficial things.

Also don't forget the entire COP system is build on the WORST nation agreement. The worst nation decites what is in the text, because all "parties" has to agree. This means actors like Saudies that are totally dependent on oil and gas, has the last word on these issues. Main players like USA and China are hiding behind these nations to have less pressure from the public. This makes the entire process ridiculous. Even having a voluntary agreement was hard. Think how hard a binding one will be?

You think Big Oil hasn't been doing the same, but with more sinister intentions? Billions spent on Green washing ads instead of moving towards renewables and carbon capture, even though their own scientists knew ff were causing climate breakdown.

Orwellian is Exxon and other large oil producing companies deciding back in the 80s that they would continue with a business as usual model even though they knew what the consequences would be, and then use institutions like thel church to convince people of bs like 'the weather can only be controlled by god' or 'there is nothing that can be done because it's marketed as too big a problem to solve'. You don't even know what Orwellian means. You just think you can throw a term out there in hope it hooks dumb people. You are part of the Orwellian process.

first few seconds in 'enter that space' - leads to reaction of 'fuck off wanky pmc speak'. stop speaking like managers. its very alienating. but you are mainly pmc, no? or at least well versed and have internalised in its horrible culture. but if you try to be with it, it fails too. there's the contradiction. so, in a manager way, you would ask me for a solution?
