I unbox the EVH Stealth 100 watt and dial it in for the first time and give you my first impressions of what I consider the best EVH amp ever made.
Note: this is not an in-depth dial in of this amp. It's a quick, first impressions dial in and playthrough. The in-depth dial in will come later.

I love new Amp day brutha! Congrats on the stealth! I just bought the 100w PRS Archon(the made in USA 6L6 100watt version) last night! Got that and my Kemper! Can't wait til I can get the Driftwood purple nightmare and the Revv generator 100p, and a Mesa Triple rectifier + triple crown, damn this is an expensive passion! Building my little studio, finally realizing my dream! But damn!!! I need to add that stealth to the list as well

I’ve gone back and forth many times between the 100w and 50w for every amp evh offers from the og 5150iii, el34, stealth and the new 5150 iconic and I’ve always found that the bigger 100w heads sounded better. They sound like they have way more usable gain without getting muddy and to my ear they sound a bit brighter. Almost like a super hot rodded plexi like Eddie was known for which I’m a massive fan of and through the evh can you can dial the resonance to kick you in the chest like your front and center

The 100w blue channel is noticeably hotter and more aggressive than the 50w. The overall amp sounds more open and fuller, which is to be expected, but it sounds like a pair of double stacks coming through here. That’s just ridiculous. Great video dude.

I have the 100 watt EL34 version of this amp. And just like yours, it’s nearly impossible to make it sound bad. But I would say, that red channel probably doesn’t need a boost but if this version of the amp does the same as mine, the blue channel should take a boost very well with very nice textures. Sry I didn’t get to see the whole video as my kids are running around being friggin crazy right now lol so yeah I missed a little, I’m sure you boosted the blue channel. Oh also, did you boost the green channel? Crank the gain up on it and boost it. It has a nice texture to the sound. Very usable for low gain, not clean tones but it’s also not “edge of breakup” either. I find these amps to be super dimensional without having too much extra stuff going on. It’s 3 channels with all identical controls. How can you go wrong?! Like with the Engl Savage mkii, there’s so many switches and buttons, you can go for days trying to dial in your tone. With the evh amps, I dare you to spend more that 10 minutes dialing in a tone. So hey, can I make a request? Is there Any chance you can shoot this bad boy out with the 100 watt EL34 version? There’s not many comparisons out there and I really like the way you demonstrate amps together. Id like to add a stealth to my collection and I’d like to see what you can come up with as a comparison before I make any decisions. I’m so torn though, idk if I want my next amp to be a savage mkii or maybe a badlander or the stealth. HALP! Lol

Hey man, I’m really digging your channel. Honest and perfect reviews. Congratulations on that. If I might request one topic - could you compare the EVH 100watt stealth to the Peavey invective 120? The reason for me is that I really love the invective that I own but now it has a technical (most probably electronical) problem that no amp guy around me can fix and sending it back to the US (I’m located in Germany) for repair really would be a big hassle for me. So I‘m considering replacing it and due to Covid-19 there is no other Invectives to come by in Germany. You seam to love the stealth so it would be a huge help for me making a decision. Thanks man and keep up you great work 👊

But you can also mod your 50 watt stealth with separate resonance nobs for each channel bro, but maybe is a waste of money I guess, is just that those 100watt heads are freakin' heavy and take a lot of space, I see no need for 100w to log around, you can also use a 4X12 cab on your EVH 5153 50w head instead of a 2X12 because the headroom difference is better and will give this head amp more headroom, the rest is just a waste of money in my humble opinion, but you do what makes you happy.

I’m running my EVH EL34 100 watt into an engl 4x12 pro loaded with v30’s. Sounds great, very satisfying in every way. BUT! The EVH matched cabs for these amps are also very impressive sounding. I also wanna put mine into a Mesa over sized and see what it does. But I would suggest checking out Ola englund on KZfaq. He has a video where he demonstrates I think 5 amps and 5 cabs and mix matching them all. It’s very insightful on how much a cab will influence your tone and gives you a very good idea what your amp would do with any of these given cabs. Best luck to ya!

I saw a comment from Reza Matix that he always runs 16 ohm cabinets because when you set your impedance to 8 ohms it doesn't utilize all the transformer windings and that affects your tone. It makes sense but I wonder how much truth there is to it.
@jb_50w78
@jb_50w78 2 жыл бұрын
That really doesn’t make any sense at all. If you use an 8 ohm speaker with the 8 ohm tap on the amps output, it is no different than using a 16 ohm speaker with the 16 ohm tap as far as the output transformer is concerned. You always try to match impedance because that is how you get maximum power transfer (there is actually something called the maximum power transfer theorem which says that you get max power transfer when source and load impedances are matched). If you mismatch the impedance, it will affect the tone since the current draw will change. The difference in tone is more to do with how 16 ohm speakers sound vs 8 ohm speakers, which is all down to their design and their frequency response. Every speaker sounds different though, even two of the same model and impedance. But as long as you match the impedance of the amp’s output it won’t affect the tone. And you can design a transformer to have multiple taps for different impedances without it affecting the sound quality or have any effect on the tone. Maybe some cheaper transformer designs have some loss in frequency response when using the 8 ohm tap, but a good quality and well designed transformer doesn’t have to make that compromise. And even when using less windings it is still using the entire ferrite core to transfer power. I say all that as an electrical engineer. Audio isn’t my main area but I have worked plenty with analog and RF circuits and also transformers.

@@jb_50w78 very awesome comment. I saw REZA said that so this was interesting
@jb_50w78
@jb_50w78 2 жыл бұрын
@@techdeathhippie6319 yeah, I really doubt that the transformer windings would have any effect on the tone when it comes to using 16 ohms or 8 ohms. As long as you match the impedance (a mismatch will affect the tone). But the speakers themselves will have the most effect on the tone, and 8 ohm speakers definitely sound different than 16 ohm speakers, and it has nothing to do with the transformer or even just the impedance itself. It’s just the speaker design. And speakers vary so much that even two of the same speakers with the same resistance rating will sound different.
@techdeathhippie6319
@techdeathhippie6319 2 жыл бұрын
@@jb_50w78 so what changes between an 8ohm and a 16ohm . What characteristics change ? Asking because seriously this is one thing I’ve never really looked into
@jb_50w78
@jb_50w78 2 жыл бұрын
@@techdeathhippie6319 you mean for the speaker? I am not an expert on speakers, but this is my guess given my electronics and physics background. An 8 ohm speaker probably has less windings in the coil compared to a 16 ohm speaker, and that is going to change the distributed inductance and capacitance besides just the resistance due to the different number of windings of wire. That’s going to change the speaker’s frequency response because the speaker itself can be modeled as a resonant RLC circuit. And changing the frequency response will obviously change the tone. But speakers are highly variable. Even two of the same speaker are going to be slightly different due to tolerance in the materials and the winding and everything. Another thing that affects the speaker’s tone is the paper used for the cone. The thickness and density of that paper changes the tone a lot. So even that could actually have more effect than even just the resistance rating. So everything about the speaker including the design will affect the tone.
