I didn`t know this Japanese-made TV SF program was so popular out of Japan. As a Japanese citizen, I`m very pleased that STARMAN is loved among people all over the world, but I failed to watch this when I was a little kid in 1960`s.

I love these old Starman TV movies. Ken Utsui is absolutely grand in the role of a powerful yet humble superhero, and he did all his own stunt work, too. The over-exaggerated Marvel and DC superheroes of today's outrageously expensive Hollywood productions are all makeup, prosthetics and CGI. Ken Utsui outshines them all with physical grace and strength of character, despite his "low hanging fruit" costume (doing all that stunt work without a cup was pretty daring). The wide spectrum of villains is also wonderful. Those that aren't dangerous aliens, various mutants, or outright megalomaniacs and their minions are evil mad scientists motivated by deep-seated hatred of their fellow humans. The humanoid manifestation of a mutated germ cell is exceedingly creepy. There is also unintentional creepiness to be found in the little girl who wears eyeglasses, who never under any circumstances registers the slightest emotion. Seriously, the kid is a human cipher. Creepy! The art direction and set design for all Starman movies are just fantastic. The evil mad scientist laboratories and secret alien lairs in this film are reminiscent of the paranoia-inducing alien tunnels and habitats of "Invaders from Mars" that gave me nightmares when I was boy. RIP Ken Utsui. You were the best.

I remember the Starman films running on the regular rotation for The Sunday Morning Movie on New Orleans local TV. Never missed them whenever they came up. Really fun films.

OMG What memories this brings back. Crap production values, cardboard spaceships and dubbing where the lip sync was out the door, and that is why as high school students in the 60s we absolutely loved these movies. So bad they were terrific. In the playground we used to imitate the bad lip sync. Back then in Australia we had”The Samurai” and “Phantom Agents” as

I think part of the appeal of shows like this, Rocky Jones, Classic Doctor Who and so forth, at least for me, is that they are all 'children's' shows. Made not just for children but with the knowledge that children are a large part of the audience. So the stories are fairly uncomplicated by adult issues, straight forward plots, one knows who the good guys and bad guys are. I think it makes them concentrate on a fast paced adventure story without being able to screw around too much. Makes for a fun lighthearted watch for me.

Ah! The source of the "If this evil force can be stopped and destroyed before actual nuclear war begins, then the universe will be safe" sound clip that keeps being sampled for songs. I've also heard "fly through space, to detect radioactivity, and to speak and understand every language on the planet Earth" used as a sample (for example, both appear right at the beginning of "Planet Protector" from the PS1 game Dragonseeds).
