Very true Ron. My son just finished bb season, 4th and 5th grade. Learned nothing. 20% of practices canceled, when they had practice it consisted of playing practice games and sometimes lay up drills. My son was the only one who played on a team before. First game boys didnt know what to do. Grouping up, running all over together with whomever was dribbling. Doing the whole stop, panic, hover over the ball thing while both teams gathered around the boy with the ball, parents yelling, pass it, help him. When the other team got the rebound, my son was the only one to run back on defense. It was so sad to watch! After the first game, my son started explaining to his teamates whatever he knew. Thats the type of practice and coaching that makes kids not want to play again. 8 athletic boys, all who could run likevthe wind with the potential to dominate and compete with other teams. How fun is it for teams who play the game well go up against kids who cant play. Unfair to all!

Touche, you make a good point haha. Ideally all drills and practices are meant for confidence building. If you don't have the confidence to do the moves you want to during practice, there's no way you'll be able to during a real game. I do agree that there are people who are amazing doing all these drills and skill work but when it comes to real games they're left with nothing, but I think that's just mental preparation, losing confidence in oneself; It's happened to me before hahaha.

Drills make players better...all pro's during off season not only condition but do all the drills to put them at their best when it's time for in season games. Say what you want about letting them play, but they won't be able to play well if they don't practice the skills.

Well if you could read, I said 15% drill and 85% play. But, if his style is getting you better, go for it. Just know there is a faster and more fun way to improvement.

If you could read, you would see that I said some drill work is good (about 15% of your practice time) but the quickest improvement in ball handling comes vs defense in live action games. Good luck with drilling kids all the time. try having them play vs defense and watch how quick they improve, work harder, and make better decisions in games.

Great workout if you want to bore your kids to death and make them hate the game. HAVE THEM PLAY 1 ON 1, 2 ON 2, 3 ON 3 vs DEFENSE! Learning to dribble is 15% drills and 85% play. 10 min of those guys playing half court 1 on 1 would have led to quicker improvement. Same old tradition thinking and drills. We are drilling kids to death. Let them play. Rant over.

I can agree with alot of what you just said,BUT,some drills i see on dvd/youtube are really a waste of time to me. I wont name names of some of these top elite trainers on here, who go a little overboard with some of these drills.I mean they look good, but not all are needed. Then you have players who look great doing drills, but sucks in a game. So i think you have to work on your skill set during the offseason and going against live defense to improve. Also AAU is the devil haha

you do need to drill for fundamentals. this is only a short video. you do make a lot of sense though. i wouldn't spend this much time on the same drills without showing the kids how to use them in game like situations. there must always be progression into game situations.

Every Drill is targeted for a basic need of individual student and if not supervised by a good in coaching coach you head nowhere ..Hours of practice goes wasted !!

how are you supposed to play the game if you can't even handle the ball...you won't get past any elite defender without a good set of handles. Handles does not mean fancy dribbling, but strength and control over the ball. Athleticism can only get you so far in this game. If you don't practice these fundamentals you won't be able to play at a high level...

So what you're saying is practice isn't important and that just by playing in games some one will magically just get better wow such an ignorant way of thinking.
