Well yes, the AT-TE was the most versatile and all-around best walker, the AT-AT and AT-M6 also were very good with their own purposes. For example the AT-AT was used for intimidation and fear tactics, but was also used for a mobile high ground artillery, with a slow but steady advance on the battlefield; effectively leveling what it came across. While still having a very broad view of the field. With the AT-M6, it was used for the same reasons and more, with the addition of the Mega caliber six cannon for devastating destruction of any durable opponents in it’s path, and the more heavily armored cockpit and reinforced legs with built in cable cutters. Essentially solving some of the AT-AT’s problems. While I believe the AT-TE is very good, the other walkers do better in other scenarios and purposes.

I think the Spider-Walker from legends was the best walker. It had the stability of the AT-TE, the ground clearance of the AT-AT, troop carrying capacity in its back section, respectable weapons, and it was pretty fast. The idea of a giant metal spider covered in blasters scurrying across the horizon is certainly a blow to morale as well.

@@datlilnigga1876 which is notably hard to do when two separate speeders have to fly together at the same pace but risk both crashing if just one of them flies a bit faster, a bit slower, or gets shot down. Not to mention the at-m6 might end up being too heavy and the cable would either snap or the two speeders would end up getting pulled abruptly back and end up crashing. Say the back legs of the at-m6 do get tripped, the walker might just end up falling back a bit and tilt up but not actually become immobile. I mean heck, those front legs might be strong enough to actually move that thing back up on its feet. I really doubt the at-m6 can be tripped in the same way and its neck is a lot more shielded so the only way to probably take it down is to ram its side and tip it over to fall sideways.

@@CallanElliott I would say that depends on use, as specialization must be taken into account. The AT-TE works as a general assault unit, while both the AT-M6 and SPHA are specialized as artillery units. An AT-TE functions well enough on its own due to its multi-purpose weaponry and low profile, but that doesn't mean the AT-M6 and SPHA are inherently bad because they are large and specialized. The difference is both would require an escort to fend off attackers while the artillery takes out heavy or far off targets. Personally, I still prefer the AT-TE since it can perform light artillery duties with its mass driver cannon, but sometimes heavier firepower is needed.
@ocadioan
@ocadioan 5 жыл бұрын
Except, any modern artillery _doesn't_ use line of sight because it sucks. The rebels fled behind a hill? Oh shucks, now my large expensive artillery walker can't hit them. If only you had something with arching shots that could fire well outside of visual range, like a howitzer for instance.

I've never been able to wrap my head around why some of these walkers got used so much. I get that it's a fantasy/sci-fi setting and not everything's going to make logical sense but why use all these slow moving walkers when in many of the instances they were deployed entering atmosphere with one of their capital ships and just blasting everything away with superior weapons would be far more efficient. The use of walkers in dense environments makes sense and they showed that off a lot better in the Clone Wars tv show than they ever did in the movies.

I hate when people say the height of the AT-AT makes it stupid for grip transport. We have people wh rappel down from helicopters in real life and they hover quite a ways above the ground. The AT-AT is just a lot more armored, and a lot more stable as it has 4 legs keeping it grounded as where a helicopter isn't quite as stable. So no, they won't just "fall to their deaths" that's quite a dumb statement to be honest. It has other flaws such as how goddamn slow it is but I think it's just fun for everyone to shit on the empire because.

I note that the shoulder-fired missile that engaged the AT-AT produced a symmetric, smoky fireball that would indicate a thermobaric or high-explosive head, rather than the bright, standoff-flash of a shaped charge or explosively-formed penetrator more optimized to engage armor. Additionally, the strike was a very poor one, landing down the side of the cockpit at an extreme angle, as opposed to striking square against an armored plate where a penetrator warhead would work its best.

Another problem with the AT-AT is that you're putting all that weight on 4 small points of contact with the ground. Tracked vehicles have the advantage of dispersing their weight across a larger area of ground contact. This allows them to traverse mud, snow and other unstable terrain far better than AT-AT. Additionally, the less pressure on the ground, the less likely you'll set off pressure mines. So the taller AT-AT is still vulnerable to mines.

They basically had it with the AT-TE. Six legs, plenty of terrain capability and redundancy in case of damage to one or more legs, low center of gravity and good stability. Removing two legs and raising the body on the AT-AT made it vulnerable and instable and served absolutely no purpose and it's safe to say that those vehicles were designed that way in 70s purely for aesthetic reasons. Or has anyone ever seen an AT-AT walk with a missing leg or walk up any sort of incline?

I think the writers of the sequel trilogy use 'siege weapons' as a pretext to put big guns everywhere : big guns on spaceships ,big guns on walkers and not to forget big guns on planets .

I'd argue the "walker armored tank"s all share a similar form factor, but they do not share a single platform. Sharing a platform would suggest they all have a common base frame. The term form factor can be used more loosely, referring to them all walking on legs for locomotion, similar to land animals. Ex: The Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 share the same platform, but they are not the same form factor because one is a hatchback and the other a convertible.

Personally i like to think there WAS technical progress, but they kept using the old chassis as they could carry the new tech. So while the same from the outside, inside they are a lot more modern. If you develope a more efficient, compact and stronger shield device, you can mount it on an older ship, increasing its protection even though the armor still is the same. Just as one example.

To me it's strange that the AT-TE has more guns. But if you remember in Rebels when it faced against the AT-AT, the only gun the AT-TE used was the big main cannon. I don't get why the others were not used tho. Plus the cannon firing didn't sound the same like in The Clone Wars or in Episode 3.

let's be honest, if the AT-TE was given an AT-M6 head with rotating duel Anti-infantry turret's on the head that's built on the tank with no neck, with shield's and heavier armor and differently designed leg's like a crab droid's leg's to increase speed (60 MPH) and manuverability, and add some anti-infantry turret's on the side of the tank and I'd be perfect as a main-line battle tank

Now I imagine like, an over-eager, inexperienced imperial/new order-officer deploying his men out of the AT-AT. The hatch opens, the men are ready, the officer is standing by the hatch ready to send his men through and shouts "Go go go!" The stormtroopers just look at him and is like "Uh sir, shouldn't we use cables to abseil safely down to the ground...?" The officer grabs the closest trooper and is like "NO! JUST GO!!" and throws him out. The rest of the stormtroopers just reluctantly jumps to their deaths out of loyalty to the empire
