engineer: can we make walkers similar to the old republics AT-RT Head Engineer: no, the first order needs to base everything of the empire and the empire alone, I know let’s just buff the AT-ST, like we did with the AT-AT, ISD, and Death Star Engineer: but what about flexibility and practicality, if we just make things bigger, we are only going to increase maintenance work, cost, time, and make us at a disadvantage when in certain circumstances Head Engineer: ... men, escort this man out, he clearly doesn’t understand what the first order wants

@@LoneWolf20213 The First Order does like using light repulsorlift landspeeders, so those may have taken over the actual scouting role. As an anti-infantry light tank, the AT-ST is fine, especially for areas where AT-ATs aren't practical, though they do have a serious problem once the RPGs come out.

All of the AT lines were ‘supposed’ to be all terrain. Doesn’t mean they were. Take for instance the clone war predecessor to the ATAT. Failed in the swamps of Kashyyk. It’s why they brought back the design with wheels. It’s also why they eventually designed the hover tanks. Now those were truly all terrain.

What do I think about scout walkers? I think the Empire took a good design, and tossed it headlong into situations where it didn't really belong. Dense forests like Endor aren't good for _any_ vehicle. Modern-day tanks and infantry fighting vehicles wouldn't have fared much better. Forests limit mobility, provide concealment for enemy troops and booby traps, and they negate any range advantage the vehicle's heavy weapons might otherwise give it. Forests are okay for infantry and artillery, since they like to hide in the shade, but armor usually prefers open ground. Something built like the AT-ST would be better suited for rolling hills and other mostly-open terrain. So, what makes the AT-ST a good design? Well, let's see... -Its basic loadout is plenty for dealing with infantry and light vehicles, though up-gunning it might make it a decent tank destroyer in its own right. Even as it is, it carries a twin heavy blaster cannon in the chin, a rapid-fire twin light blaster cannon on one cheek, and a grenade launcher on the other cheek, with all three mounted on independently-articulated housings; that's the sort of firepower I'd expect on an attack helicopter. -The articulation of the weapons is excellent. Between angling the main hull and lowering the chin guns to their farthest depression angle, an AT-ST can hit targets almost directly underneath itself. The guns' elevation is also impressive, allowing it to engage air targets like gunships with its main guns. By comparison, even a tank with excellent gun depression usually has a dead zone of several yards around itself where it can't hit a target because its gun can't point down sharply enough, and engaging air targets with the main cannon is a theoretical possibility at best. -Its armor allows it to ignore most personal infantry weapons; sure, grenades might work if you can get close enough, but only a real slivke would let enemy infantry get that close without lighting them up with the blasters first. -Even without its weapons, its height gives it an advantage in sensors and communications. The walker is already tall enough to peek over most ground vehicles and single-story buildings without trouble, which gives any sensors or comm gear based in the 'head' a nice vantage point and expanded range compared to anything mounted in traditional ground vehicles. Its preferred role in scouting is ultimately to spot targets and call them in to other, more heavily-armed units; the fact that it can also mix things up in straight fights is a bonus. -Compared to wheeled or tracked vehicles, it has an absolutely insane degree of ground clearance, making tank traps, ditches, and other obstacles a non-issue. They do have a high ground pressure, but no more than other armored vehicles. And in terms of unstable ground, well, again, tracked vehicles would have fared no better when faced with things like the log-rolling BS the Ewoks pulled. It might not have flipped a tank, but it would almost certainly have inflicted a mobility kill at least, which takes it out of the fight almost as much as blowing it up. -The fact that the AT-ST doesn't use powered lift systems to stay up means it can pack more armor, weapons, sensors, and other gear into a highly mobile platform than a repulsorcraft does, and at a fraction of the engine power requirements. For its size and role, an AT-ST is almost over-gunned and -armored, letting it get away with picking much bigger fights than it really needs to. -And of course, whenever it faces dismounted infantry in trenches or in the open, its height gives it the unmistakable advantage of putting its guns on their own personal high ground. I understand that can be a pretty nice advantage in combat. The fact that the 501st decided to throw practically all of these advantages away on Endor is an unforgivabe display of tactical carelessness and arrogance. What they _should_ have been doing is use their sensors and comm gear for things like calling in mortar strikes, long-range AT-AT gunnery, and close air support from gunships and TIE bombers, and spotting Ewoks hiding in ambush for the Stormtroopers to clear out with sharpshooters or repeating blaster fire, not wildly rush in with guns blazing like Leeroy Jenkins. If Vader had lived (and if the Ewoks and Rebels hadn't already capitalized on their incompetence), the Dark Lord would probably have made a lot of examples of what happens to people who waste Imperial blood and treasure that day.

At least you can see them at Hoth, albeit not showing up close onscreen. The Hoth variant is debatably even better, possessing better range and height, allowing for better exploit of its advantages. Not to mention the wide open, flat space the AT-ST conceptually flourishes in.

@Generation Tech, you got one thing wrong. I say this because after Rebels came out and they were using the AT-DP left and right, but no AT-ST's, someone asked (I don't remember if I asked, or if someone else did, I am pretty sure I did, but in case I'm remembering wrong, I don't want to say it was for a fact, me who asked) Pablo Hidalgo on Twitter if AT-ST's were going to be phased in to the show, or if the AT-DP's were a stylized/budget saving version of the AT-ST (I don't remember the question exactly, but he responded that they were two different models produced simultaneously in different parts of the galaxy and made for different uses. So the AT-DP wasn't a predecessor to the AT-ST, it was it's contemporary.

I don't doubt the legitimacy of your claim, but anything Pablo Hidalgo says I kinda don't care for. @@TheMrPeteChannel There is a canon explanation for this. With the fighting on Mimban devolving into brutal trench fighting, the Imperial Army Infantry need heavy fire support, but the thick mud made it extremely difficult for walkers like the AT-ST and AT-DP to operate, so they started deploying AT-DTs right up at the front lines since they were far smaller and lighter, but they were extremely vulnerable here, being completely open with only a thin gun-shield for protection

Wouldn't a *speeder* be better for most scouting applications? Unless the enemy had large anti repulsor jammers which were rare and localized in effect (and have emergency wheels underneath so you can drive it out of the jamming zone and zip off again, or just fit repulsor jammer jammers). They could outrun any other ground vehicle type, skim over obstacles and their greatest risk was that they were so much faster you could hit somethingb of you weren't careful. As for light combat a speeder is a even more nimble target and it can quickly flank you and get behind. Also a combat speeder could have a turret fitted that could also fire underneath, allowing it to do strafing runs, fly byes, and shoot from above. It could also hug the earth a lot closer than the height of a AT-ST. And the lack of bouncing motion makes aiming from one a lot simpler - I wonder how common motion sickness on a Walker was?

Walkers had an advantage for getting through energy shields like the ones used during the Battle of Naboo and the Battle of Christophsis. The AT-RT is also more adept at navigating difficult terrain, and can leap over obstacles that would challenge speeders, like large chasms.

@GenerationTech, could you do a video about why walkers were used when replusorlift technology already existed? (I.e. why use a walking tank when a hover tank is a possibility?)

Technically the AT-DP and AT-CT aren't related to the AT-ST as every aspect of their structure is different, including that they are single person vehicles.

I think the AT-RC is definitely the best one. I think the only thing they need to do is give the driver heavier tougher suit armor. The loss of mobility should’t be too much of an issue since they’ll be sitting in the cockpit anyway.

AT-RT may be lightly armed, dangerous to ride, and overall less combat effective than its later evolutions but it's still one hell of a ride. It served its intended role perfectly, just tended to get stuck in heavier combat than it was designed for as the war dragged on. Gotta wonder why they ever bothered with legs, though - you'd think repulsorlift vehicles would be way better. A hovering vehicle doesn't get stuck on terrain.

Hi @Generation_Tech, you made a small mistake. While talking about the AT-ST, you showed a scene of the Solo movie, where the AT version was actually an AT-DT, which looks like a two-legged Flak 88.

I think that people don't put the Imperial arsenal into perspective. Everything the Empire has is ideal for combating poorly equipped insurgents and villains and, very importantly, for surveillance. These vehicles had to be really tall in order to be able to see beyond buildings and other obstacles. The legs were to be protected by infantry. They were not for full scale clone wars style attacks

While I liked all of the AT-AT type walkers, I didn't like most of the AT-ST versions. I mean the last one may be better but the ones we are used to in the movies just look better. Also I do realize they aren't technically all AT-ATs and AT-STs. Just to lazy to type it all out. ^_^

The problem with walkers past the AT-TE and AT-RT can be boiled down to one word. Tarkin. It always goes back to Tarkin, who would sacrifice efficiency for fear which is terrible when fighting an actual war.

I think the AT-ST is a pretty good when it's used for it's exact role. It's an anti infranty and scout walker, not a heavily armored tank. The Empire designed a good walker and used it in the wrong planet and the wrong role.

That last walker you talked about was actually made in Lego, and judging by the bad sales on the set I doubt the walker was any good. Anyways, I’ve always favored the AT-RT more than any of these. It may be difficult to ride but it has everything a scout walker needs. It’s small, fast and has decent firepower.

The AT-ST works great in support assists and as a calvary vehicle much better than a front line assault vehicle. It still serves a purpose , of course rebel and ewok plot armor made them look just as clumsy as srormtroopers. When really with a competent pilot would be very dangerous.

AT DP is by far the best scout walker. Its more armored than the AT ST its cheaper to make than the others. an AT ST would cost 70,000 credits to make the AT DP only took 50,000. Its Cannon can swivel so it can shoot you without even having to face its enemy. Plus it could run up to 90km The AT DP is just better in every regard.

@generationtec How would you improve the walker design and platform I personally would take the base model AT TE remove all the weapon systems and replace them with detachable anti personal blaster multi purpose missel launchers close quarters grande launchers and the main cannon as hevey massdriver controled from inside the main body make the platform taller wider and longer add more armour replace the cockpit with a 2 man set up accessible from inside and armor it up use 3d projeters and Terran sensors to help with navigation total crew needed is 3 passenger 40 cargo 8 speeder bikes or 2 scout walkers

Chronologically, wouldn't the Personal Walker have been a predecessor of the AT-RT? A companion design at least? In Battlegrounds its first engagements are as early as Geonosis, and I don't remember whether or not the AT-RT saw action there.
