Hi, this is a quick follow-up video for the Evolution R255SMS-DB double bevel, mitre saw I unboxed a few weeks ago.
I've been using it to cut metal mainly but today I needed to cut some oak sleepers.
The saw is rated at 90mmx300mm cut so I was asking a little too much for it to cut a 100mm thick oak sleeper but it did nearly cut all the way though! I had to finish it off with a hand saw but that wasn’t a problem.
In the video after the wood cut, I show a couple of cuts of metal.
PLEASE BE AWARE THE DUST COLLECTION BAG SHOULD BE REMOVED WHEN CUTTING METAL AS THE SAW CAN PRODUCE HOT METAL CHIPPINGS AND MAY CAUSE A FIRE. IT IS RECOMMENDED BY EVOLUTION AND MIKEMAKESIT TO DO SO
Would I recommend the saw? Yes, absolutely. I still need to see how long the blades last but so far so good.
Remember if you sign up to the Evolution newsletter on their web site and “like” them on Twitter and Face book you earn Evo points. I did this and saved over £30 on the purchase of this saw and stand. I couldn’t buy the saw cheaper anywhere else.

Mike, I've watched most, if not all, of your videos on this saw and I want to compliment you on your careful and thoughtful explanations! I'm planning to get either the single or the double bevel version of this saw. I have a good table saw that I can cut double bevels on wood pieces although in thirty years of use, I've seldom used this feature. I may just get the single bevel unit as I plan to use it primarily on metal. Thanks again for your excellent videos!

Hi Steve, thanks for the great feedback, it’s very much appreciated. While I have the double bevel saw I don’t think I have ever used both sides! Thanks for watching 👍🏽

Hi Neil, I had a smaller single bevel Evo (well still have) and it was always a bit limiting. Now I can swing the saw both ways which makes my life a little easier. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

I spent a while looking for a replacement mitre saw and liked the idea of the top mounted motor and price was also a major consideration. Unfortunately on the first unit I received the central semi-round table part was mounted nearly 2mm lower than the side supports. That was replaced and my current one which is OK(ish) if I don't remove the stickers from the table but the milled side supports are not level with each other. Also the back upright work support halves do not align with each other, I have masking tape on one side. While it's a good design and has many useful features, in my opinion it's let down by production problems/tolerances.

Hi Mark. I think the Evolution saws that I have are really aimed at the keen DIY market given the fact , in my opinion they need to be handled really carefully or else the setup will go out or you'll break or bend something. Business tools I've come across are very much more heavy weight. That said with a little bit of fettling and careful use a good repeatable cut can be had with the saws I own. I've read reports stating some machines will run out of the box where others need total setup or in your case a return to the factory. The only remaining issue I have is the amount of cuts I can get with the general purpose blade on metal. Or the lack of them! I've not sourced metal cutting only blades, if I did maybe I'd get longer life on the blade. I have an unboxing and setup of the Evolution R210SMS 300+ this Friday. Anyway, thanks for your comments and for watching 👍🏽

Hi Mike, im thinking to buy this saw, could you tell me approximately in how many steel cuts the blade went dull and a replacement was needed
@MikeMakesIt
@MikeMakesIt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Zlatomir, So far with this saw I have been cutting mainly wood (Big oak sleepers) but the metal I have chopped with it cut like a dream. So far the blade is still really sharp. My other Evolution 210 would only do about 8 cuts in steel box section before it went blunt although Evolution have advised cutting from the edge of the steel and working in and not to do a plunge cut onto the steel. I'm really liking all the features this new saw has to offer, you won't be disappointed. Why not check out my other Evolution saw videos if you haven't already? Thanks for watching 👍🏽

Great video and the previous one too. I was a little concerned that you cut the metal with the dust collecting bag attached. Could that not be a fire hazard when cutting metal?
@MikeMakesIt
@MikeMakesIt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi FirefoxGallery, well spotted, you are absolutely correct. Although the saw generally does not produce red hot metal chips when cutting it is advised by Evolution (And MikeMakesIt) to remove the bag when cutting metal. Of course this is something I should have done. I suspect I have done this before but can report no issues; fire, smoking etc. Of course hot metal chips and wood clippings are not a good mix! Thanks for the comments and of course for watching 👍🏽

Im thinking about buying this saw primarily for metal square tubing and occasionally wood for industrial style furniture. Do you think this multi purpose saw could handle the task or should I just look at dedicated metal chop saw. Appreciate your input!

Hi Al. Both of the Evolution saws I have are excellent at cutting metal (210 and 255) but if you are going to be cutting metal on a business scale and not occasional use then they may not be the best choice, in my opinion. In fact I'm looking to be getting a band saw as I'm not getting enough cuts per blade as I would have liked so is quite expensive as I need to swap out the blades quite often. One thing I would say is the Evolution give an excellent cut when the blade is new and I suspect quicker than a band saw. I have no experience with a band saw but would expect the blade to last longer and they are cheaper to buy. The band saw I was looking at is: www.axminstertools.com/axminster-model-engineer-series-mcb115shd-swivel-head-metal-cutting-bandsaw-700103 It's out of stock at the moment but I'll be doing a review as soon as I get hold of one. They are available in the USA under a different brand name (sorry forgot what that is) so could be available to some people. I hope this may help a little, thanks for watching 👍🏽

Hi Al, I've always used Evolution blades and find them very good and they have dropped in price recently. I have considered buying a blade sharpener but thats for another video (need to buy the sharpener first!) Evolution reached out after I produced a video on short blade life found here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLChZ5yoqdmteWQ.html Link to Evolution blade life video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nMqEetqkl5PQhJs.html Good luck, I hope that helps, Mike 👍🏽

Hi Mike, is that an Evo 800B mitre saw stand you're using? The reviews of it on Screwfix are pretty bad so I just wanted your view. I tend to view l'ow to high' reviews first to get a feel of the percentage of negative reviews against positive and whether they say the same thing. Also, I've heard it's difficult to get hold of finer wood blades that fit properly. What do you think? Also you say the max depth of cut is 90mm but the spec on Screwfix site says 80mm. Either way it can almost cut a standard sleeper. Thanks, Dave

Hi David. When I bought the Evo 255 saw I bought the bundle which included this stand shop.evolutionpowertools.com/products/mitre_saw_stand#features I'm not with the stand at the moment to quote a model number from it I'm afraid. What I would say about the one I have is it is very robust and stable and easy to fold. However what I also found is when clamping on the saw it is very difficult to find a setting where you are able to remove the saw easily but when refitting it clamps well. Basically it is either too tight to remove or too loose to clamp to the stand. Also the up stands either end are a bit tacky and flimsy and they usually move as you are using them. I've found a place to keep the saw on the stand in the garage so it lives on the stand 24/7. I managed to cut 100mm oak sleepers but that was absolutely the limit. 90mm is more like the max. I think 80mm is a little under rated. Evolution say 90mm! I've used genuine Evolution blades which as you expect work fine. I have an issue with cutting metal with the appropriate blade; too few cuts in my opinion. Check out my other videos on Evolution. I have used wood cutting blades I bought from Aldi which work a treat but you need an adaptor ring (basically a big washer) as the Aldi blades had a bigger bore hole than the Evolution. This adaptor was bought from Amazon. I hope this helped and I thank you for your comments and for watching 👍🏽

Use Saxton blades, they have specific evo wood blades and are now branching into the multi purpose blades too. Work much better in my opinion with the correct bore size to boot. Also the stand I've had no issues fitting saw to and from it is just the arms that are a bit wobbly to say the least. They slant away from the corner they are fixed into when weight is on them which is fine with the rollers (kinda can get away with it) but awful if your using the end cap piece to be a stop or anything else.

Hi Coi, mine was set correctly so I didn’t have to adjust it and at the moment I’m away from the Workshop. However I believe I have the correct link to the manual for the saw. Take a look at page 25/26. It does explain how to setup the saw for the adjustment you seek. If this doesn’t help please let me know as I will be able get “hands on” in a couple of days. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching 👍🏽. Link below. evolutionpowertools.com/downloads/manuals/build/r255smsdb_plus/book1.pdf

Sr. Can you confirm a think. I have one evolution too and repair the machine give spark inside motor . And I see when you take off the finger in trigger you motor do the same spark. Can you tell me if it is normal or it's a chronic problem with the evolution. Because I buy one circular saw and do spark too
@MikeMakesIt
@MikeMakesIt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Vitor. I have used a number of different models of Evolution saws and they all seem to spark a lot. To be honest the 255 is the worst. I don’t know if this will affect its life span. This sparking is due to building the unit down to a cost. I expect on the very best saws this sparking is suppressed. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

I need to cut a sleeper with a depth of 120mm. The depth you are cutting pushes the depth to the limit and beyond but it was initially reassuring you managed to get a 100mm piece in there, albeit obviously needing to turn the piece over to finish the cut. I can see the only thing that stops a 120mm piece sitting on the cutting bed at least is the laser guide bracket not allowing enough clearance between the slide axis and the top of the 120mm deep wood surface. If only I could be sure it could just about get away with it at 120mm (again needing to turn it over to finish it), I could have the confidence to buy this model. Unfortunately, there are no stores locally which stock this on the shelf, so its impossible to take a sample block of wood to check it visually. Very frustrating!
@MikeMakesIt
@MikeMakesIt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark thanks for the comment. There is another item that would cause an issue even if you were to removed the laser, and you are correct, it does get in the way when the machine is pressed to its limits. The item I'm on about is the big clamping washer that holds the blade in place. This will press onto/onto the wood being cut and prevent the blade being pressed deeper. I've just measured mine and its 102mm from the blade tip to the outer edge of the washer. I've linked in another Evo 255 video of mine below and at the start of the video the blade clamping washer is clearly visible. When I was cutting the sleepers I was noticing a black mark on the wood. That turned out to be from the washer! Link below, thanks for watching 👍🏽 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/et2obNybmZjPd6M.html
