This is a singles set between me and Anastasiia (aka Nastya) and our first time playing each other in singles! Nastya has an aggressive game with big shots from the baseline. I prefer staying at the baseline and hit with more spin. Leave some nice comments below for Nastya for playing this match with me she's a great sport and competitor!

You are 3.0 hacker. She is serving like a 4.0. The title is nonsense. You didn’t anything well. She hit too much in net - and why she did is you are a hacker. If she was good she would destroy that. Magen she doesn’t play much.

He’s not a 3.0, but you’re absolutely correct about his titles, they’re usually absurd and just objectively ridiculous. “Former pro” could refer to literally anybody who earned a single WTA point. Her tennis is a good level, but is similar to a 5.0 woman. That forehand around the 6:40 mark is crazy bad…just a sitter forehand that she hits 8 feet long. No legitimate professional is doing that without mishitting it. She also lacks any sort of weapon….being #7 in D2 tennis does not translate to being a professional tennis player lol. I’m sure she had a great career and seems to be doing a lot of good in the sport she loves, but it’s disingenuous to call her a former pro Winston is probably a 4.5 according to the USTA algorithm, but his tennis is much closer to a 4.0 in most areas. So…saying a 3.0 is obviously not true at all, but I agree his titles are annoying and unnecessary. His videos would do fine without embellishing things, because it’s still good tennis and there aren’t many videos like this

Most people don’t know how much your level goes down if you don’t practice or do any matchplay for a long time. At a high level the margins are so small because of the ball speed. Even pros who haven’t played in years struggle to play singles once a lot of movement is involved. Don’t be so quick to judge people’s former levels just because they didn’t perform as expected in front of a camera. Anastasiia hits the ball well! Good content Winston!

Curious about this system of assigning numbers for comparison of players. Just how are these numbers derived? What goes into the determination of the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5? Does defensive play style vs offensive style change the writing of the calculations? If it's some purely objective algorithm that records historical quality of strokes or win success, is this number rounded off to the nearest half just to make it simpler, with a 3.14 rated player getting called a 3.0? Interesting how this universal rating comes about-

Good video! Winston, two points. When you're pulled wide you consistently recover to the exact middle of the court, instead of just slightly off to the opposite side of your opponent. This gives you too much court to cover and you're missing the next ball by that one stride. Also, on ad side receiving, you're way too far out wide (to hit your forehand?) giving her the T serve which she burned you by...yep, one stride because of your positioning. You may get away with this with 4.0's and some 4.5's but better players can hit these angles when you give them this advantage. Coach Mike

As a 4.5 (mostly doubles these days as I'm close to 50 and out of shape), I've played some singles points against a top D2 gal and her movement is insane. It doesn't seem to matter where I hit it, she is there. If I'm serving well as a lefty with all of the spins and placement, I can win points. But on her serve, it is next to impossible. FYI...not sure where Nastia is from but the gal I'm speaking of is from Poland.

His consistency playing with these higher rated players has improved his game leaps and bounds. I'd agree that he needs to improve that serve to reach 5.0 and he'd need to develop some type of weapon to win easier points, as everybody I play at 5.0 has that 'something' weapon that gets them easy points (which I don't see from 4.5 and down): big serve or big forehand or insane consistency or unreal defensive speed, etc.

@@MrPositive3D Good point. Never really thought about that "Something" weapon. For Winston it might have to be his forehand because I dont see it coming from anywhere else. @@ALEN1ful I wish I could take credit for that mindset, but that's something my junior coaches would preach on constantly. And the more 'weapons' you can stack, the higher you go. I was watching Winston play that 7.0 guy (348 in the world I think they said) a few videos back and that dude has a wicked flat 1st serve and a monstrous forehand, and ran down balls wonderfully. His backhand was probably only a point higher than Winston's but it was consistent. Then you get 3/4 ridiculous weapons you get top 100. 4/5 ? A million earnings haha. 5? 6? Djokovic :) 1. Big serve, 2. big forehand, 3. best backhand in history? 4. Greatest retreiver to ever play. I mean the dude doin splits out here. hehe 5. Doesn't miss if he doesn't want to, while also hitting screamers at the same time 6. Tactician of a master chess player M. Carlsen level to breakdown any type of opponent :) And yes, Winston's best chances of getting to 5.0 are pumping up his mph on his forehand (he should get a speed gun out there and try to increase his pop each week). As well, as learning a flat 1st serve as he's only hitting 2nd serve spinners for all serves. And of course keep working on his already very nice retrieving skillz.

Great video...makes me want to start playing again. Random piece of advice...looks like you're dropping your head at the last minute when you serve and you could generate a lot more power with basically the same technique if you got a little more torque in your hips. I havn't watched many of your videos but im a little curious why you don't seem to be moving in and punishing her serve at all? You seem to be behind the baseline even on her second serves? I know you said you like to stay at the baseline but based on your overall level it still seems odd that you wouldn't make this adjustment? She's also serving a ton to your forehand and giving you pretty good angles to attack but you seem super content on returning everything to the middle? She also clearly favors her forehand and on almost every ball you put in the middle she's running around it to her forehand.

To keep up with a former pro - rusty or not - on ground strokes is really impressive. To the clowns doubting your or her level: come up with the goodies. I have three remarks: 1) did you realize her second serve always went slice to the forehand? I though you could capitalize more on that pattern.2) Your own serve needs work. It's consistent but it's lacking power. It's technically flawed, somewhat waiterish. Surely you know that after taping yourself so often. Any intent to fix it? Or is this where you decide to settle for the achieved consistency? 3) I also have the impression there's a brief instance after each shot where you are watching the result instead of recovering to neutral stance. Do you agree? This is something you can still fix without downsides, I think.

The main difference I see in their hitting is that she can force errors and make him late while he can't do that to her. She can hit outright winners. He can't. That's because she hits cleaner and has more "modern" strokes that he does. He pushes. She takes full cuts with topspin at the ball. She looks polished. He looks like a self-taught athletic guy. He's limited in what he does because of this. She's much less so.

Great playing from the two of you (though I wish I could play you Winston- I'd be dictating to your backhand and waiting for the inside-in-forehand explosion hehehehe). But as for the comments about the level of play, 2 things I have to say: 1.) I doubt Nastya is at her A-game if she isn't actively competing and training (sounds like she's coaching from what I heard). And 2.) for NTRP, once you get into the 3.5-4.5 realm, that can be very hard to differentiate skill-wise based on if it's a good/bad day, depending where the player is from, if the player is out of shape, making a comeback, battling injury, or playing against a certain player type.

30 points in the first game! That's six points more than a golden set! Could have gone either way. Winston is a solid 4.5. Anastasia was obviously a top college player...number SEVEN int he nation!

For someone who said her fitness was off, she was running well enough that it took her 10 minutes to hit a single backhand. Which is impressive.

Winston - if you read this, I think your two handed backhand would go up a couple levels if you think more about following through more with your left hand. You slice the ball a lot on the backhand side, and I think that's a side effect of not having total control with the topspin backhand. Just observe how your right hand snaps through on the forehand side. It needs to be similar with your left hand on the backhand side.

Brian has quite a solid play so it takes quite some effort or a lot of skill to just push him away or score easy points. im not surprised that magen had huge problems but the title "ex-pro female" is hardly delivering the expectations.

Phew. First game was a grinder. I think Winston plays a lot so his fitness level is very high. He takes these former college players and "former pro" players by being patient and letting them beat themselves.
