Gaslighting, a term rooted in manipulation and psychological control, has gained widespread recognition in discussions about relationships and mental health. It is a term that's been making waves in discussions about relationships and mental health. But what about unintentional gaslighting?
Gaslighting, at its core, involves undermining someone's reality or perceptions, leading them to doubt their own sanity or experiences. I have a friend who has had people saying these kinds of things to him nearly his whole life, and now when upset he'll sometimes say these kinds of things about himself: "it's my fault I feel this way." I always try to make him realize his feelings are valid and that he has every right to feel the way he does. He has made progress and I see him blaming and gaslighting himself less and less as time goes on.

That first one is so real. A lot of the parents of friends I have don't realize the value of things to their children and minimize them. Making their children begin to despise them as they feel devalued and stupid. And maybe what they care about literally is that. But you should never invalidate what or who someone loves and cares about. No matter how awful, bad, dumb, or pointless they may seem. As you don't know their side of the story or the bond they've gained with that

Thought I feel it's just because I havent deepen the relationship nor opened myself about too much with anyone in the group. Because I have the trauma, that everytime I show myself vulnerable, everyone will use it at their advantage. It's a thing I'm trinna fix.

I feel like my parents unintentionally gaslighted me, but I thought it could only be intentional. For me, the „too sensitive“ is true. Or my parents denying things they said because they dont wanna believe what they said or know it was bad and try to gaslight me that im making things up. Everything was coming from a place where therapy was needed. They loved me to bits, but they hurt my soul so much and didnt even notice how sick i got. When I said „im not ok, i think im traumatized“ my mom said „no, youre not“. Or theyd blame me for my good hearing, my sensitive taste and so on. „You are a picky eater, maybe its just you who hears everything…“. My Dad recently said something positive about my sensetive taste, that was the only thing I never heard anything good of and it almost made me cry. My Dad tries so hard to do better.

Unintentional gaslighter here. I would only really use it on my mom, since I hate her winning arguments (she’s abusive) but try to be patient with us. If we can’t change, it’s okay to leave. It is yes matter what. But it’s a good idea to help them work things out by forming a true bond with them. If they are over toxic run away asap. It is only good to stay if it’s small things.

Dang, just realised I say "it's your fault you feel that way" and "you're making a big deal out of nothing" to my little sister, mainly because every morning she has a hard time waking up, because she's tired, so I usually say it's her fault because she sleeps late, and I usually say something like "yeah I agree school isn't fun, but nothing we can do" I'm gonna try to be better, any tips? (Also someone in the comments said they have a friend who says this stuff to themselves, and I kinda relate honestly)

Aww it's nice to see that you are wanting to change, as your the elder sister let me tell you ( being the younger sister) our big sister words impact us way more then you might realize Try to empathize with her, why she sleeps late to begin with, is she anxious? Stressed? Understanding is the key, let her know the way she feels is valid and you guys can work out a way together. Show her love and care, give her a reason to wake up Early morning. You never know what she's dealing with all alone I don't know how young you guys are but truly sorting it out together is best with love and understanding

I don't have diabetes. 2. I don't suffer from depression. 3. I take an antipsychotic medication for Schizophrenia but it's aripiprazole which doctor mentioned as a one which could almost not affect my sleep. 4. My sleep doesn't get disrupted very often. I mean, I can go to bed and fall into a sleep without any trouble. 5. I suffered from OCD but now it's way better and I can avoid compulsions even though obsessions although they come into my mind.

Some of these are okay, but this wasn't written by a turned gaslighter. "You're too sensitive." is a phrase that's used to control an interaction. "It's okay to have feelings" is a true opposite, but doesn't redirect energy. The replacement should be functionally equivalent to it's source. "You're too sensitive" = "You are nothing." + "Do my thing instead." might be replaced with "It's okay to feel the way you do. Can we focus on this right now?" = "You are something" + "I need to do this, please help?". Every manipulation tactic is a way of getting something, somebody can't just abandon all their tactics without replacing it with a positive constructive alternate way of getting the same thing.

it is not gaslighting if it is truly unintentional. that is like the whole definition of gaslighting: a form of psychological manipulation with the express goal of making someone question their own sanity and mental wellbeing.

Let's talk. You have made it very clear that you don't believe a Christian has to repent to be cleared of their sins. You have also replied to weak arguments against your point. However, you haven't properly argued against any comment using Bible verses. You haven't touched on the good arguments on your belief, only the bad ones, and it is pretty apparent why. You know you are going against the scriptures and His word, which is why you are avoiding anyone who makes a good point against you, and only take apart weak arguments to make your points seem more reasonable than they are. You can reply if you want, but you most likely won't, and that's okay. That's not the point, anyway. The point is for you to see this, as well as others, so you realize that your claims are very apparently false to anyone who questions them adequately.

Ok, but youre making a big deal out of nothing and im only doing this bc i care about you isnt gaslighting when youre trying to help someone who is killing themselves with drugs and regularly going into psychosis and flipping out over things that are only happening in their minds. My person has recently been watching hundreds of videos on gaslighting and has decided that things like me telling him there is no one watching the house, this is in your head, please stop nailing all the doors and windows shut, is gaslighting, as is me breaking all the needles i could find the second time i found him blacked out. It is apparently also gaslighting to point out when an issue hes having is because of the drugs.
