Exhaust Gasket Replacement on Toyota Matrix/Corolla/Pontiac Vibe
First of all, I'm not a mechanic, just a dad that has to try to stretch his dollars out like the rest of you watching this video. If I can do a few things myself to save a little money, that's money I can invest in my kids. Today, I'm saving money by doing what should be a relatively easy job of replacing the deteriorated gasket between the exhaust manifold and the rest of the exhaust system. I am replacing the spring tensioned bolts that clamp the 2 sections of exhaust together as well. When replacing this gasket, I highly recommend replacing the bolts too. It's cheap, and the springs tend to weaken from heat over time so they don't clamp with the same force as new. Hopefully this video can help you also.
How do you know this gasket needs to be replaced? In the case of these cars, you can usually smell it. At a stop, with the fan on in the car, you can smell that exhaust odor as it makes it's way into the cabin. It's a very typical issue on these cars with this spring loaded exhaust flange and typically has to be replaced every few years. Once you know how easy it is, then I have no doubt it's something you too can do yourself.

I'm an old mechanic, This flexible connection using spring loads bolt allows the motor to move when you are in drive or revers, remember that motor moves, these gaskets actually work very well

Thank you for the video. I'm doing the same repair on an old Toyota Highlander and I just opened up the flange and found the same thing you did - I do not think there's anything left of the original gasket. Thank you for this video - very informative.

Just did this to my Vibe. I started out by pulling the center isolator mounts before removing the flange bolts based on this video. I was also able to pry off the old gasket by reaching around the sub frame with a short screwdriver (my clearances might be different w/ manual trans). Thanks for good info. It REALLY sped up the job.

Quick tip for creating some space to get the old gasket out and new on in. Once unbolted, hook up a ratchet strap on the exhaust and hook it to something sturdy toward the rear of the car. Ratchet it to pull the exhaust back and create a bit of room. Saves struggling when replacing these gaskets!

Sir, great video. I have a 2003 Matrix XR same issue...for two years now. I've already changed the exhaust manifold/gasket to block once do to a small crack in it causing exhaust fumes smelt in the cabin with the "Recycle button/green light" off. I would have to press the recycle button/green light on to close the outside vent...at that point no fumes were being sucked in. But it was a pain in the butt during rain or snow as the windows would fog up with lack of FRESH air, causing me to run the Defrost WITH the recycle button on. This way the a/c compressor would dry the air hitting the windows clearing the fog away. But who wants to drive around with this method running the A/C on eating up more gas?? Anyway.... I'm still getting slight exhaust fumes in the cabin while driving with fresh air (recycle off) being drawn into cabin. I found a small 1/8 inch hole in top section of catalytic converter where it meets the exhaust manifold. That's were exhaust fumes were shooting out from (sprayed soapy water on cold start up and saw mist shooting up over hole. Learned from Chris Fix/youtube). Dropped CAT yesterday, had friend tack weld hole, installed new "textured" style gasket verses a "smooth" styled gasket. Well, no leak from welded hole, but there is still a SLIGHT blow by some how from gasket area. How has your repair held up? Can you tell me/us where you bought your bolt/spring set. I like the way those are designed. I'm going to try the smooth styled gasket along with your style bolt set. Thank you, Chris

That part is doing well. I got the bolt on Amazon at www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002VVJRDM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. My issue is I have another exhaust leak I can hear but haven't identified yet, either with the manifold, or the manifold gasket. I have to do the same thing you do, except can't use the AC because the compressor on this car doesn't work. Very annoying. I keep it in recycle mode when at a stop, and normal when driving so I don't get fumes in the car.

I just tightened them down until they bottomed out and then a little bit more. They don't need to be super tight.

HELP!!! I had to have an oil pan connection housing replaced on a 2012 Camry because Jiffy lube tech messed up the threads by taking off the oil filter. I had a mechanic replace it and now it has a low baritone sound when it excels from 0 to 40. Then it sounds like a low-propeller airplane. Is that the donut out of place or bad or motor mounts?
@FloydNashFixItDad
@FloydNashFixItDad Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by oil pan connection housing. It sounds like a gasket or something may be in the path of air or a fluid that moves thru a passage, and is acting as a reed though. I would take that back to the mechanic or to a dealer to have them look it over and identify where the sound is coming from. If it's something obstruction oil flow, it could be damaging to your engine. Of course, it could just be an exhaust leak too.

Awesome video many. I have a question did you hear rattling sound before you fixed?
@FloydNashFixItDad
@FloydNashFixItDad 2 жыл бұрын
No, I didn't actually hear any rattle or anything at all. The bolts on this flange are spring loaded so as the gasket wears, it should pull the side together to help keep that seal tight, as much as it can. If I had rattles, it was from all the other things that needed replacing.

Thanks for the informative video. Didn’t you have engine light on the dashboard? Usually, like in my case, people get the dreaded P0420 code. Besides this code I also smell fume coming out of the, I assume, the manifold gasket area. I’m going to inspect it soon.

@@FloydNashFixItDad Glad to know it helps. My prius got a leak supposedly at manifold gasket area and there is one which i clearly see after the oxygen sensor, where the catalytic converter party connect the tail part of the exhaust system, I don’t know if the latter also causes the P0420 code to pop up.

I put the Fel Pro 61106 on my 2009 Pontiac Vibe 2.4L(Auto parts said its compatible). After a week I started getting the leak again. When I looked underneath I saw gasket mesh coming out. Is everything good for you? I am still trying to find what went wrong for me. I reused old bolts and while putting gasket I inserted the flat end first, made sure its in before tightening the bolt.
@FloydNashFixItDad
@FloydNashFixItDad 8 ай бұрын
You may have overtightened. It doesn't take much. Also, make sure your PCV valve is working. If you are building up crankcase pressure, it could be pushing the gasket out.

@@FloydNashFixItDad Thanks for the response. I bought new bolts and gonna use it now. Did you torque them to 32 ft lb?
@FloydNashFixItDad
@FloydNashFixItDad 8 ай бұрын
@ditomathew1 oh sorry I had the wrong video too. I apologize. The motor mounts especially that back one technically called a transmission mount might be bad. If there is a lot of vibration at that joint and the springs aren't so great then it can vibrate and wear out that gasket in no time. Apparently these were bad about that.

Nice. I need to do this on my 2006 Matrix 4WD with 214,000 miles. No smell in cabin, but the occasional p0420 code due to high O2 reading on downstream sensor which can be caused by an exhaust leak. I recently replaced all four engine mounts which when really worn (especially the front and rear ones) can cause the exhaust flanges to open and close, which can also wear out the gasket. Did you get the parts at Autozone?

p0420 is cat insufficiency
@MarzNet256
@MarzNet256 2 ай бұрын
@mococaboy17 Yes. But this code can also be set if downstream o2 sensor reads incorrectly or there is a lean condition in the exhaust. It is not always a bad cat. I'm still on original cat with 223k miles. It's working great (confirmed by downstream o2 sensor waveform).

@@FloydNashFixItDad Thanks for your quick reply. How did you check to find the crack? Is it on the top part or the bottom part of the manifold? Many thanks!
@FloydNashFixItDad
@FloydNashFixItDad 9 ай бұрын
@@genetixx01 It's on the bottom of the exhaust manifold. Apparently that is a common place for these to crack. I put a smoke bomb in the shop vac and blew the smoke into the exhaust and I could see the the leaks. Don't know if I would recommend, but it worked really well.
