ESPN reported that the College Football Playoff board of managers has unanimously approved a new model for the expanded 12-team field this upcoming fall, ensuring inclusion for the five highest-ranked conference champions along with the next seven highest-ranked teams, as announced by the CFP on Tuesday.
The decision, made during a virtual meeting of the 10 FBS presidents and chancellors and Notre Dame president Rev. John Jenkins, follows months of delay, largely due to considerations from the Pac-12 amidst conference realignment. The vote required unanimous approval for the 5+7 format, a condition that was met despite previous abstentions or requests for delay from the Pac-12.
Washington State president Kirk Schulz, representing the Pac-12 on the board, affirmed readiness to vote following consultations with Oregon State president Jayathi Y. Murthy. Schulz emphasized the benefit of seven at-large bids over the original proposal of six conference champions and six at-large teams, particularly given the recent losses suffered by the Pac-12 to other conferences.
The new format, which prioritizes the five highest-ranked conference champions, ensures opportunities for teams across various conferences, including the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, and the highest-ranked Group of 5 champion. While the term "Group of 5" is not explicitly used in the format's description, it acknowledges the potential for champions from non-Power 4 conferences to secure playoff berths based on rankings.

Let's be honest, the 7th at large bid is going to favor a B1G or SEC team 7 times out of 10. 2 times it'll favor Big 12 and then 1 time it'll favor ACC. So yes, it does help the Big 12, but let's not pretend that a 2nd Big 12 team is getting in every single year

No kidding, the 7 at large ensures 6 teams from the SEC & B1G. We will see the top 3 SEC teams, the top 3 B1G teams, the top ACC team, the top Big 12 team, the whomever auto bid, and the final spot will go to a 2nd ACC team or Big 12 team. We saw the networks take 12-1 Bama over 13-0 FSU last year, I don't see any reason to think that will change.

@@raleighsanford5111 I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that final spot went to an SEC or B1G team. Based on ESPN's way-too-early top 25, Alabama would get the last spot assuming the highest ranked teams won their respective conference champions.

I think with the parity in the Big 12 it is more likely that the championship game could be between teams with two losses, the three loss loser may still face an uphill battle.

It’s only a 2 year contract. The B12 needs a long term solution for access imo so still lots of valid concerns/questions out there on how this will look in 3 years beyond these next 2.

All this playoff making it harder then it should be the top 12 teams should make it no matter what conference they are in NCAA making it harder then it should be

Yes, the Big 12 is aided by the 5+7 CFP model, but Wednesday is when we hear if we been related to teir 2, not as my guaranteed spots. Wed.could be the biggest day in the future of college football

The Big 12 IS a Tier 2 conference. They became a Tier 2 conference when Nebraska, Texas A&M Texas, Oklahoma, and Missouri left.

The proposals from the SEC and Big10 that are rumored mean this is a temporary stay of execution. Unlike an execution, however, the non-power 2 will be pushed to slowly bleed out. Not only do those conferences want multiple automatic bids but a further increase in their revenue share. Enjoy!

Texas Tech beat KU last year and the year before, so why shouldn’t Tech be ranked higher than KU? they both have returning injured QB’s, but Tech has an 1100 yard returning rusher and a better defense!! And no coordinator change at Tech!!!!

The PAC can survive as a a conference. In 2025 They can add the top teams from the group of 5 who are expected to be in the run for the top G5 team In essence forming a Power Group of 5 In 2026 Add the top Mountain West teams and depending on what happens with the ACC get Cal Stanford and maybe SMU. No it won't be a Power conference, but if the add all the teams that are expected to be in the run, that maximized their chance of having a team in the playoff. WEST TEAMS Oregon State, Washington St ,Boise ST, San Jose St, Air Force, Fresno St Cal and Stanford East /Central teams Tulane, Memphis, UTSA, Liberty James Madison, App St SMU and Army 16 teams (Maybe USF in place of James Madison ) There won't be much left sadly of the other Group of 5 conference and the odds are great that one of those PAC 16 schools would get the slot. Again depending on the ACC, they could add whatever remains after the SEC, BIG10 BIG12 get to get to maybe 20 teams.

@@brow7809 I listen to both bc (drum roll please) we are in the big 12 (shocking I know). I’m using his standard and the medias standard for talking about a team to illustrate it’s not being applied which if you watch espn (except SVP), FS1, and unfortunately Big 12 podcast, they intentionally avoid giving time to UH. We aren’t the darling blue bloods they want to win or the Cinderella mid major. If you think Drake would not be all over Kansas , Baylor, ISU, TTU if they were atop the conference, I have a rotary phone to sell you. Plus, if UH fans don’t comment, it drives narrative, that everyone loves, that UH has no fans or fan base so why bother.

Kansas at 10-2? Bwahahahahaha... Big XII will have top 3 teams with at least 2 losses, it's a difficult conference, we are not like B1G/SEC with Top heavy conferences.

Newest rumor is the sec wants 4 auto bids. So we just as well get ready for the official relegation of everyone who doesn't end up the sec and big10. The truth is there are no longer 4 power conferences - there are 2. This is why instead of cheering and rooting for the collapse of all these conferences, everyone should have been clamoring for the pac12, Acc, and big12 to not only survive but be healthy. This has all played out exactly as the p2 was hoping. They are in effect taking their ball and going home along with the other culprits, espn and fox.
