An analysis of Spice and Wolf and how its economics are interwoven into its narrative. While many praise the series for its great character chemistry, I don't think many understand just how clever economics is integrated with its romantic drama. Hopefully you can learn to appreciate it by the end of this! :)

LegendaryVegeta the only reason why we won't see another season is that the creators of the anime admits that they only made the anime to sell the manga. Most anime will follow that rule. Most, not all. In fact we are getting more and more original anime with manga coming later. But yes we won't get a season 3, and yes were all just as mad as you are about it.

Hey, it’s been a while! I didn’t intend on being away for so long, but from being super busy with Uni at the end of last year and going overseas for work experience, I just didn't have time to make videos even when I wanted to. At the start of this year, I was sort of unmotivated even when I had time (this should have came out Feb at least). However, I’m feeling the drive to make vids again, so hopefully you’ll see me real soon. Just thought I’d explain, for anyone who’s interested. :) For those who are unfamiliar with the economic terms I used in the video, definitions for them are linked in the description.

The use of economics of this show is really what drew me into it. Despite not having much knowledge of the subject, I was able to follow most of the business concepts in the series without having to go back and rewatch. But I would be interested to hear from someone well-versed in field how simple or intricate the writing is in that regard. I'm curious by how much research had to have gone into writing this kind of series.

I've been reading the books, and there seems to be somewhat of an error or at least confounding variable within each of the economic hurdles faced. In Amarti's case, the problem comes from acceptance of the pyrite deal: there is literally zero reason for Amarti to accept it. If Amarti gives Lawrence the money for the pyrite, in exchange for pyrite the next day, the error here is that Amarti has literally nothing to gain, in consideration that he could literally just by pyrite from anybody else. Sure, you could argue that since the market is closed during their conversation, Amarti would be increasing his potential profit margin, however if he is confident that pyrite would continue to rise (as he is, or he wouldn't accept the deal) as well as the given implication that market values are adjusted very little whilst the market is closed, in addition to the substantial money he already has, there is no reason for him to buy urgently. This is further supported by the fact that he is drinking quietly when Lawrence busts in. Since Amarti is going to sell off pyrite the next day regardless of whether he gets it from Lawrence or from another party, he should simply just buy the pyrite from a third party for no-strings-attached and no time offset, considering that when Amarti buys from Lawrence he is losing the liquidity of the pyrite asset, as it is in Lawrence's control until the end of the contract, and this loss of asset liquidity is not counterbalanced by a single other factor. If he buys from Lawrence and receives + sells tomorrow, he will benefit if pyrite rises, and lose if pyrite falls. If he buys from another party and sells the next day, he will still benefit of pyrite rises and lose if pyrite falls, however if he buys from a third party the pyrite will be his regardless, so if the bubble crashes he still has the chance to sell before pyrite reaches rock-bottom, meaning that he has the same exact profit potential with the added bonus of liquidity to offset risk. This would only work if Amarti's only avenue for securing pyrite is through Lawrence, which is obviously not true, and in that case Lawrence would literally just not short sell to Amarti and be done with the whole thing. The only reason I could find that Amarti would accept the contract is because of how Lawrence phrased it as "a duel", wherein both individuals are putting out equal risk and fighting with their market judgement, which would appeal to Amarti's inflated and noble senses rather than his shrewdness, however this doesn't seem in line with the author's intention as Amarti IS posed as a precocious businessman. That, and the fact that Amarti is introduced to selling-on-margin and is not completely informed about it and its implications, however it is again well established that Amarti understands entirely what is going on by the end of his and Lawrence's conversation. Unless either of these two explanations that rely in a flaw in Amarti's character is correct, it seems that this is a plot hole in the pyrite arc. In addition, the contract is flawed from the outset. If Amarti is aware of the (supposed) debt that Holo owes to Lawrence, there is no need for him to introduce a grand sense of urgency with the wager-contract, unless he just wants to put on a show (another explaining away via a potential character flaw in Amarti). Yes, given Lawrence is a travelling merchant and has limited time in Kumersun, however Amarti also knows when Lawrence is departing (he was the one who secured Lawrence and Holo's room), and could easily bargain for more time for Lawrence to stay by introducing the prospect of paying off Holo's large false-debt (at- unbeknownst to Amarti- zero risk to Lawrence), but loses this ability by introducing a timed-contract. Also, as soon as Lawrence ensured the existence of Holo's absolute freedom after Amarti would presumably free her debt by asking him about it (as opposed to transferring Holo's debt to Lawrence to Amarti instead, making him her legal guarding and legally obligating her to follow him), Amarti now has the (certain, as we know) risk of losing all of the money, if Holo chooses not to accompany him. So Amarti is not only introducing an arbitrary and detrimental time-frame for him to gather the money, he is running the risk of simply giving the substantial amount of money owed by Holo away to Lawrence for, essentially, free if Holo doesn't choose him. If someone takes the time to read this mini-essay, please reply with your thoughts and a counterargument. The story is fascinating but loses a lot of its long-term enjoyment when there are holes in the main plot stimulus like it appears to be in this case.

ovrkill1234 It seems to me that, at least in this case, you’re perhaps attributing far too much jaded shrewdness to the kid. You’re right though, there’s almost no reason for him to buy the pyrite under contract from Lawrence himself. The only exceptions would be 1. All possible suppliers of pyrite are not willing to part with their supply unless at a selling price that would leave Amarti at projectable deficit. Or, 2. Amarti buys into his delusions of courtly romance so much that he will accept almost any odds that will make his “noble” duel for the favor of a lady riskier for both duelists if just provoked enough. I, personally, like to presume that the latter of these might be truest, for not once does the boy ever think that Holo might simply not choose him or that she might just be playing him for a fool in order to make some money. Ironically enough, she was basically doing both of these. He’s almost like Lawrence in the beginning of this arc, supremely cocksure that Holo’s affection for him can’t possibly waver. Of course he then gets brought down back to planet Earth and stops taking Holo’s favor for granted, though, Lawrence being Lawrence, he ends up doubting himself far too much in the end. Anyways, point is, Amarti is not even once hinted as doing anything except assume that he shall unequivocally receive Holo’s favor as long as he simply releases her from debt. TLDR; Amarti is a self-aggrandizing, “nice guy” dickhead with his head so far up his own ass, he can’t see the light of day. I wouldn’t put it past him to take a dumbass risky gamble cause “muh honor”

I believe Amarti got the pyrite from Lawrence exactly BECAUSE he believes in his success in selling it, regardless. He's proving a point about his control over he situation by being (apparently) reckless. And until Lawrence crashed the market with rumours, he was absolutely correct in thinking he'd be fine because Pyrite was absolutely going to rise in value. Economic trade, even today, relies largely on guessing and/or manipulating individuals and groups in order to bottleneck them into a legal deal they have no choice but to go along with. Some times they go along out of pride, fear, stupidity etc. It's mostly about trickery. You convince someone they want something, for whatever their personal reasons are (hopeless desire, ego, getting money for sick relatives etc.), and once they go along trying to get what they want you remind them that this isn't just a free ride: they have a contract with you now. They can't back out or they owe you, which is dangerous, so they are forced to go all or nothing, or find some shrewd way to manipulate you back. It's how certain stock exchanges work these days too. But the thing is it's rare you have something they want directly. It's not a hostage negotiation. So instead you have money, or a way to make money, and somehow, some way, that money is the quickest, most alluring way for them to afford what they want. That's how people get in deep with the mafia and the like. You can't forget the emotional manipulation side to market dealings. So in this way I think Amarti could have been a more interesting character and that would have made his arc more entertaining, but the point was that despite his hoity toity attitude he was young and eager and no where near as shrewd as he wanted to be. And he, like the general public, was just as vulnerable to manipulation. Also, trade is about peer pressure and advertising. You convince people they want something before somebody else gets it (some new toy, some half off product), you convince people that they want another person to have something (aren't these two so cute together? Lets ALL insure that they end up together, okay?) etc. I think that is the point of the multiple 'character flaw' moments that carry the story along, and though it's hard to tell how likely Lawerence and Holo really would be able to guess or read all of those flaws and use them to their advantage, but never the less, it's still mostly believable, I think.

First of all, THANKS A LOT, i finally fully understood the concept of buying in credit as shown in the anime, and second, i do believe the only reason the kid accepted the new bet is because he was too cocky about his victory, having already holo in his arms and seeing lawrence devastated when earlier the same day

Armarti was a proud-ass lucky shit that always thought he was right, he was so proud that he left his familly to raise his own money alone just to say it was all his work just to feel even proudder of himself, he was indeed smart and all, but his ego was way too inflated. Because of that he saw no reason to not get the contract from Lawrence, I mean, what could he lose, the price of pyrite was only increacing anyways, what could go wrong, in the end he would only profit, this is what he thought, he was smart and all, but when he met Holo, he decided that she belonged to him. There were a lot of times I thought there was plot holes, but when you think more about it and re watched the anime you realize what really is going on. This is a very complex anime and easy to misinterpret so you have to be very carefull before affirming things.

for those baffled as to why pyrite would be a commodity it was used in a variety of applications and at times was as valuable as gold if demand was very high and the supply of course low. These medieval applications were in firearms such as the wheellock where pyrite would rub against the wheel and generate a spark to ignite the flash powder which would in turn ignite the gunpowder inside the firearm. Another application was in use of firestarters where a piece of pyrite was struck against a piece of flint. Another application was to make jewelry. So pyrite isn't worthless like people think.

But she literally does not know about wahtsoever relationship btween Laurence and holo, and yet, she decided to risk the chance of getting a valuable working partner by saying that. If it's a normal person with a wife and eve were to ask this to that person, that person would have made her suffer the hell out just for the sake of saying such blasphemy... If she was a merchant for such long period of time, why would she be so stupid in the way of requesting for something from a stranger? I know it somehow succeeded in the end, but it's just by luck.

I don’t know if this right or not, but imma take a crack at it. It’s also been a long time since I read the light novel, so I probably forgot some stuff. From Eve's perspective the pros outweigh the cons. The pro being that she'll get a large amount of money from selling Holo and a connection with Lawrence if she succeeds. The con only being that she loses the chance of connection with Lawrence, but from what I remember from the light novel, Eve appears to be quite a competent merchant having both connections and crafty tricks. Lawrence has the backing of a merchant guild but not to the extent that they’ll happily save him, and Eve appears to have a high enough backing to pressure the guild much less Lawrence. There’s probably not a good chance of Lawrence throwing hands. As for the deal itself, my memory is definitely lacking, but I think it was that Holo would only get sold off on the basis that Lawrence will get her back, and then both he and Eve would earn a profit. The answer the original question is that the pros outweigh the cons. For an example, let’s say Eve's value was 10, the pros weigh 5, and the cons weigh 0. If the offer succeeded, Eve's total value would be 15, and if it failed, it’d still be 10 since a connection with Lawrence doesn’t weigh much. As I said, this is all conjecture, so I probably made a mistake.

The Nudity is honestly Tiring, but whatever. More importantly: Economics and other Stuff are underused in modern Manga and Anime. I wish so much for Manga/Anime that actually follow an Architect (very well in another World) or at least make Money. Even Manga following Shopkeepers dont actually say anything about the actual Coins earned and all that; if you know what i mean.

I don't understand the pyrite situation. Lawrence offers to sell Armati pyrite worth 500 silver coins for an advanced payment. So Armati gives Lawrence 500 silver coins. If the price goes up Armati will receive less pyrite from Lawrence because the same amount of silver (500) now buys less pyrite. No one benefits. If the price goes down he will receive more pyrite because the same amount of silver buys more pyrite. No one benefits. What am I missing?

Technically: Let's say 10 Kg of pyrite are worth 500 silver coins at the moment of the trade. Lawrence makes a deal to deliver 10 Kg of pyrite to a set date in the future and gets 500 silver coins in advance to the delivery. (They agreed to a specific amount of pyrite, that happend to be worth these 500 silver coins at the moment they made the deal, just to clear that up.) Now there are 3 options: The price stays the same: Nothing changes. The price for pyrite goes up (lets say to 550 silver coins for 10 Kg), Lawrence still needs to deliver the 10 Kg so when he buys the pyrite he has to pay the full 500 silver coins he got in advance + 50 silver coins out of his own pocket. So Lawrence would have lost 50 silver coins. The price for pyrite goes down (lets say to 450 silver coins for 10 Kg), Lawrence now can buy the 10 Kg this price and can keep the 50 additional silver coins for himself. It's speculative trading with goods you don't have at the moment and in this case with money you don't have.

Gold has significant value in power and quality in sound magnetics in music these days... It must be a divine quality for the spread of voice and music in retrospect of the heavens above. Thus the reason why the church would believe Gold is divine.

For anyone still weirded out by the nudity in S&W: Considering this takes a medieval European setting, it's not that tangential for mystical women like Holo to be portrayed naked in lets say fairy tale and occult books. Also, she is practically a force of nature; the values of covering yourself up may not stick to her unless she's being harmed by overexposure in her human form. She at least sees the importance of obtaining good quality fabrics to better adapt to harsh weather. Honestly, seeing a naked lady in anime as a middle schooler, I was already jaded by all the nudes I see in museums and old fairy tale books. I honestly wondered at some point if there would ever come a naked male god/deity/fairy, but I guess Holo was the central anthropomorphized being for S&W... Come on! Even Pompeii had d**ks for signs!

Kind of wish Japan would chill on the brain-garbage-for-horny-teens that about 90% of anime seems to be and produce more writing of this quality. I was discussing anime with a coworker of mine, and she was shocked and kind of offended that I stated that despite liking anime, I think that the vast majority of it is trash. Being reminded of how good this show is only strengthens my resolve.
