Exploring an abandoned chalet in the Maine woods built by suspected World War II German spy

This property is near my cabin in Western, Maine and has been on my list for awhile now! Thank you Lovell Historical Society for the photos and information.
On the side of Speckle Mountain in Stoneham, Maine sits an abandoned Swiss style chalet built by Roy C. Wilhelm, a New York City coffee importer. He moved to the Evergreen Valley in Maine and built his 3 story chalet in 1932, hosting thousands of visitors as a prominent figure of the Bahá’í World Faith. Local folks in Maine found his German name strange and how often he would send telegrams/wire money oversees. He was also caught signaling children in nearby Kezar Lake with a flashlight from his mountain top chalet. This was an innocent game but it led to an investigation by the FBI when he was suspected of signaling submarines in the Portland Harbor (wild considering how far apart these locations are!) Roy raised swiss goats and german shepherds on his property. "Wilhelm’s goat barn is nearby, a sturdy two-story structure that Green Berets retrofitted in the late 1970s. Stalls were turned into bedrooms with a dozen-plus bunk beds that remain. A clip in the Sun Journal archive said the Army used it for a “winter warfare operation”
"When he died in December 1951 at 76, he left about $1 million (the equivalent of $8 million today) to the Bahai Faith “for humanitarian purposes toward doing some share in healing a desperately sick world,” according to Sun Journal archives. He was posthumously awarded the rare Bahai honor “Hand of the Cause of God” and buried in his Stoneham hillside. The place was sold to pay for holy land around the Shrine of the Bb in Israel."

That is the coolest abandon Cabin i have ever seen. The Swiss style works so well in cold places and was quite sofisticated for the era.

What a shame that this place is no longer in such a good standing as it once was. Really enjoyed this video, thank you.

My grandfather Rupert owned Evergreen Valley Ski Resort and the chalet for 7 years. So I have spent many days and nights at the chalet. At the beginning of the dirt road leading to the Chalet there is a cabin on the right. Walk into the woods to the right of that cabin and you will see his gravestone about 30 yards away and maybe 20 yd from the road. It's like a private cemetery with just Him in it.

Whomever broke all those windows are evil. That will destroy the house in no time. I hope she told the historical society so that they could fix it since they own it. Peace be with you. I would love to own that property for the peaceful serenity. All the nature surrounding the house is amazing.

In Europe, sinks in bedrooms seem standard with shared bath down hallway. Everything really is in amazing conditions considering the year built, open to elements. I wonder how he got it built. Not really a basement when it's all windows. Probably my favorite part of the house.

Sad to see this workmanship go to ruin.. what kind of society just lets a place go to rot. Especially considering the construction and the use of a local stream for generating electricity…I am not going to watch this any further…it’s too disturbing something this beautiful and back then so ahead of its time for off grid or vacation living.

A"society" that appears to have lots of $$$ but whose members have lots of "air space" inbetween their ears??? Ridiculous to just let it slowly rot away......

Suggestions. Go back in spring or fall so that you don't have all the foliage blocking your view, bet you can find the gravestone. Plus, do you know if the dam he built is nearby?

York Maine/ cape Reddick had one very similar on top of Mt agamenticus . Tiny ski operation in early 70s. It was beautiful. Too hike around the old trails and look at the chalet was extremely fun , gratifying. People lived there. Was used for functions . But fell into disrepair I believe. Been years since I've been there. But worth checking out. Old Indian lore , the view amazing..can actually catch glimpse of Mt Washington on very clear days. But surrounding communities like wells , Ogunquit , York , kittery. Portsmouth etc. Used to be a fire tower you could climb. Like all the great things. " they " find a reason to tear it down or prohibit it ..who are these people I just wanted to be enjoying..lol. unfortunately true though.

I love the place and you effort you put, to share this video with us. An the "history" that local people was think in of him. But the photo of orient man with him and green and red, make me think 🤔 if he was working with someone, was for Japan. But real good work! Thank you.

My parents were talked into a time share and took a loss, this place was never going to be Sunday River or Sugarloaf, someone with a plan in reality would of known this, buy the property, tear down everything but this lodge and turn it into getaway for weekenders with money and maybe one day you’ll break a profit

I watched a documentary about Hitler, & how he escaped to Spain, then Argentina, then to Glacier National park area...very believable story...said the mountains reminded him of the alps, & he was seen at a chalet style tourist inn. Hid in plain site...

Ok no problem, but maybe put that you have permission from owners in your videos it would keep negative comments at bay also maybe keep other people from just showing up and going in. I own property and have had issues with people wanting to explore it and make videos for KZfaq. As a property owner it is a majorproblem headache. So when I see people just openly disregard posted property it makes methink really mad. I even had one KZfaq idiot threaten me with a gun on my property that he was trespassing on! It didn't work out great for him though because my Rottweiler removed a chuck from his thigh and yes I pressed charges and he was fined and went to jail for 10 days.
