Known for hosting land-speed record attempts, the Bonneville Salt Flats are an amazing geological wonder. Located just off Interstate I-80 in far western Utah, the Bonneville Salt Flats are a remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville. The Flats are 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, with a crust that is five feet thick at the center. Experts estimate that the Bonneville Salt Flats hold 147 million tons of salt, most of which is common table salt!
Racing has taken place at the Bonneville Salt Flats since 1914. A portion of the salt flats is marked out for motor sports and event are held yearly during speed week. Several speed records have been set at the flats, including a one-time record of 630mph set by Gary Gabelich in 1970.
We explored the salt flats with our new 2022 Ford Ranger 4X4 XLT Sport. We took delivery of the Ford Ranger in early June of 2022. The Ranger has an electronic-locking differential, trailer tow package and a remote start for those cold winter mornings. The exterior color is carbonized gray, which I thought looked great on the flats!
