I heard that a smart builder heard that they wanted infill for the embankment project, and at the same time digging the basements of the countless houses in e.g. Bayswater was resulting in lots of surplus soil. So he did a deal to get paid to remove the surplus soil, and another deal to supply soil……

It's worth noting that while Sir Joseph Bazalgette was knighted for pumping sewage out of London, his great-great-grandson Sir Peter Bazalgette seems to have been knighted for pumping it back in as the chairman of Endomol.
