I guess it's an unusual route for western visitors to enter Sumatra. How did you travel around when you got to Dumai and then made your way to Duri?

Might be worth going to a clinic to see what's ailing you, Doug, rather than self-diagnosing. But, it could lead to a rabbit hole with series of tests they might want you to do, to be thorough and that could be a costly endeavor. So I guess if you feel something is seriously off, it might be worth it to visit a clinic.

Well, the health ordeal, such as it is, continues in a low grade kind of way. I keep getting sick and then recovering again. But it's not that bad. Part of normal life for trips like this. 🙂

Happy New Year, to you, too. The new year arrived with very little fanfare in Dumai, but it was nice to think that the clock had ticked over on 2022 and that a fresh new year had begun. We can put the ordeal of the pandemic just that little bit farther behind us...

Hoping you would consider wearing a bike safety helmet for your forthcoming long distant ride. I understand that the country roads are not well paved, and could be littered with small animals dashing across the roads. A nasty fall without protection would be quite worrying. Cheers and all the best from Klang, Malaysia

I wonder if the quality of the bird's singing is related to how healthy and happy they are? So the prize is as much a testament to how skilled one is with the caretaking as to the talent of the bird itself. Maybe even the breeding is a factor. If so I imagine there quite detailed decisions made when mating particular birds.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug Жыл бұрын
I'm sure you're right in all those observations. It's definitely not as simple as just buying the best bird and letting it sing. You have to take care of it in the right way and establish a kind of relationship with it and know how to keep it happy and relaxed and wanting to sing. I think stress of any kind causes the bird to feel bad and then not sing. The experts seem to have a knack for caring for these birds properly.

Thank you. Happy New Year, to you, too. It's pretty rare for me to contract anything like real food poisoning. I just have a very sensitive system, and the smallest thing can set off a few days of upset stomach. I envy people that seem able to eat anything they want anywhere and not suffer any consequences. I've never had that kind of iron constitution. 🙂

Is it safe to travel in dumai city?
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 9 ай бұрын
I think so. It seemed perfectly safe to me. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be safe. It just seemed like any other smallish city in Sumatra. The biggest danger for me was the traffic.

26.16 saw a Maybank. So there is a Maybank in Dumai. Those stagnant drains get a push during heavy rain and the water flows on. I attended a lunch function at a house in the back lane from a main street. There was a large canal next to the lane in front of the house. The guests were served lunch on banana leaves. As soon as one finished lunch the leaf was folded with any food remaining and thrown into the canal which was hardly flowing. I was told after a rain the contents will flow away. Any advice given would only draw retaliation. So silence was observed as matter of descretion.

@@PlanetDoug icic ... "ke mana" would be short for to where .. possibly asking where are u going to. I think in Malaysia we would say "pergi mana" literally going where. and "dari mana" would be from where .. not sure in Bahasa Indonesia what would be the norm

@PlanetDoug

There is lots of transportation going from city to city and town to town all over Sumatra. I didn't see any kind of city bus lines inside Dumai. But you could take a bus from there to Pekanbaru or Medan or any of the towns in between I imagine.

"For Muslims, attitudes toward pets are in accordance with the teachings of Islam, which respect dogs while still viewing them as unclean." - Google. Hence there are no dogs to be seen.

I remember that from my last visit to Sumatra. But I'd forgotten about that tendency in Islamic countries for there to be few dogs around. Cats seem to be favored over dogs.

I must say that Dumai is an extraordinary ugly looking place. Open sewers, garbage everywhere. Seems the people are very friendly though. But your videos have persuaded me to give Dumai a wide berth if I am ever in Sumatra.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug Жыл бұрын
Dumai seems fairly typical of a Sumatran town to me. Maybe that's why it didn't jump out at me one way or the other. I spent some time in northern Sumatra travelling around not long ago, and the towns all looked similar to Dumai (at least how I remember them). They weren't attractive towns in any way. The streets were pretty torn up and a lot of the buildings were rundown. I just got used to how they looked. So Dumai felt quite normal to me as I wandered around. And, as you said, the people were always outgoing and friendly. That's what I remember most about my last visit to Sumatra, and it feels the same on this visit.
