exploring youtube’s clout culture crisis
Hey everyone! welcome back to my channel :) this week i thought we could take a break from the lighthearted content and look at a more “serious” topic considering in my opinion i feel like the ~clout issue~ has gotten so large that it’s practically impossible to be someone who uses the internet and not have come across clout chasing content at some point. i’m sure by the title you can already tell that today we’re going to be looking at “clout chasers” but we’re not talking about influencers blowing money on bags or cars, we’re talking about budding influencers and social media stars who are ready to go to the most extreme lengths to get attention and clout online. i think that with everyone and their mother trying to build a following online the problem has definitely gotten a lot worse and i thought we could look through some of the more current extreme examples of people doing insane, ridiculous, gross and shameful stuff to try and stand apart from everyone else. i know it’s definitely a depressing topic to look into considering the stuff some of these people post can frankly be disgusting but i figured looking at it and having a discussion could be worthwhile.
i really hope you guys enjoy the video, i know its a long one, i really tried to edit it down but it was hard to mention every person i wanted to include with enough info about them while not making the video 395830495 years long lol. i would really love to hear what you guys think of the situation because i know a few weeks back i had a lot of requests to look at lovelypeaches so i assume that means a lot of you are interested in the subject in general and have some opinions. once again really hope you guys enjoy, if this kind of video isnt for you we’ll be back to more ~fun~ videos next week as i’ll be posting the second part of the bootleg bachelor series so look forward to that!! regardless i hope you all have a really good weekend and ill see you guys soon :)

Why does this happen
@Forestfreud
@Forestfreud 4 жыл бұрын
Mortem Malum idk if this was a legitimate question but IMO it’s the same reason kids from tame suburbs get super into ~edgy~ culture. Gay kids realize that they don’t fit into the “norm” and won’t be able to no matter how hard they try, but since they’re young, they don’t quite know who they really are outside of trying to fit in so they try too hard to fit the gay stereotype for a few years until they figure out what works for them. Since the media and our culture usually have a strict set of gay stereotypes, they tend to gravitate towards and try to emulate those, just like a “badass” kid who tries smoking cigarettes even though they make him sick. The meanness is probably a result of deeper insecurity which happens a lot with kids who feel they don’t fit in (and kids who do. So just kids haha) These kids typically grow out of this phase for the most part after middle and/or high school. They’re usually alright at heart.
@mortemmalum7228

@@Forestfreud It was mostly sarcastic, but an interesting explanation and mostly what I think too. There was a kid in my school(a small school in a moderately wealthy area, my graduating class was like 220) that had a kid like this. I always thought it was weird because he wasn't the only gay kid that we had, there were at least 5 others, and most of them didn't like him because of his cattiness but he was always surrounded by the rich girls. There was no violence or even any significant bulling other than towards his voice which was a falsetto to make some singers jealous, with the stereotypical mannerisms.

@@Forestfreud this spot on is a surprisingly adept overview of a confused young gay kid who really believes 'no one understands me'. Some people seem to think that any mention of murder, rape etc in a "joke" makes it super funny and edgy, even when there isn't really anything funny about the joke. "Dark humor". And when you don't get their unfunny joke they say that you're triggered and don't have a sense of humor. I guess to them the mention of rape IS the joke. It's sad and frustrating

The Etika jokes or just ANY joke/meme made about someone passing away were overboard. But that’s when I realized how desensitized everyone is. And the whole “people grieve differently” doesn’t cut it anymore because humor could be a good coping mechanism, but most of it don’t come from a good place/or genuine people

The clout chasing era is also horrifying because so many little kids are growing up watching people like Jake Paul and other “shock humor” creators, seeing how popular they are, and then actually imitating their personality. Like, talk to ANY middle school boy nowadays. It’s like a “feminist cringe compilation” got injected into their brain. They literally just repeat what they hear their favorite creators saying, without actually knowing what any of it means.

One of the most extreme cases was in Pakistan while I was there, I remember my mum forwarding me the clip because it was horrifying. She wanted me to AVOID weirdos on the way home. So, there was a young girl who got stabbed by her brother in the street and while she was suffering and moving around in agony on the floor, this kid was taking selfies and making videos with her before her death and the people around them were also so baffled? and I guess struck with the bystander syndrome, no one called the police until it was TOO LATE. they were making videos too! It was baffling and then his family refused to file a report because "He was fine, and they don't wanna send their only child to jail" the Police chief filed the report himself on the girl's behalf. It was DISGUSTING. P.S. this is a side rant but this brings me to the " oh you wear modest clothing, you must be oppressed and you're not a real feminist" no, biatch, I'm fighting for lives, not a skirt.

I think things like this are the latest version of people trying to capitalize on cheap shock value, like any "joke" in poor taste. If anything at all has changed its how people trying to become infamous often are doing *real harm* or at least trying to be as convincing as possible (contrasted with someone like Jake Paul, who clearly has an on persona and has talked about how some of his more extreme videos were fake). Great video btw!

I really appreciate you making these kinds of videos, because you handle them in such a mature and easy to follow way that I think they're very helpful to people who aren't part of these communities. It'd be awesome if more parents and people who are around kids old enough to be exposed to this stuff watched your videos so that they are aware of what's out there. I have younger cousins who are always on KZfaq, and I'm glad I know just how bad this platform can be so I know what to watch out for and talk to them about if needed. Thanks again, Casey!

These are videos that not only are old, but have millions upon millions of views and are littered throughout the internet. Even worse is I can’t imagine how many thousands more videos she could have put here that would have been just as shocking. Maybe, we should realize her point. These people are making horrible and vile videos, and it is helping them become viral. They are spreading. Which means you can expect a hell of a lot more. The sad thing is nothing she showed wasn’t passed around and enjoyed by millions already. The “heavy content” you refer to seems to pass the internet standards. I don’t get how anyone can be online anymore and not realize it’s a cess pool full of videos pushed on you with titles and images in thumbnails you didn’t want to know or see. That make you feel disgusted. I’ve seen videos of abused kids meant to tell their story. No. Don’t show me a bruised face and sad eyes. I don’t want to see that. I end up thinking about it all day. Thinking about how many people are learning if these horrors and feeling sad and not actually gaining anything from doing so. It’s pointless. It’s great to get people to click. It seems honest. But just exploits a child’s miserable and sad life and death and that’s it. At least tell me how I can never let it happen again. Or who failed here. Anyway, my point is, yeah I’m shocked. 3 years later, I wonder if it’s really gotten so bad now that you see what I’m saying. Actually, it does seem like uglier things are somehow becoming more and more accepted. Let’s understand that people like this are showing us these sick things because their point is that these things are sick, disturbing, and being treated like a cute dog video. That kids will see these things. That we have young people learning from the huge views and fame gained from these videos. Her point is you can’t avoid it. These things aren’t removed right away and the creators blacklisted.

I think some people feel so destined to be an outcast, never accepted for who they are, that they decide to lean into being this figure who thrives on not being liked or accepted. It is sad. I imagine people like that, even internet comment trolls, are just lonely people. Who just want someone to see them. They don’t care if the conversation consists of nothing but being told you’re evil, and replying poop or whatever. It’s. It’s not someone who’s life is full with family and friends and things they enjoy and what not. It’s someone who’s seriously very, very, lonely. Like a child who pushes your buttons because they want you to react to them, even if it isn’t good.
