Similar setup to what I went with this year, got rid of most of the quick links and went with the split rings.

Sad, what's become of trapping! I trapped the Adirondacks for 30 years and never used an extension, In fact I shortened most of the factory chains, THINK about it. If a critter can only move 18" he can't develop enough momentum to cause a pull-out, but a long chain defeats that security.

I agree about using an extension on a foot hold trap for cats or canines. I use these with the little dog proof traps for racoons. The majority of the area that I trap is reclaimed mine sites from years ago and the ground is extremely hard and rocky, making it very difficult to drive in a stake but i can quickly and easily wrap an extension cable around a nearby tree and attach it to the dog proof. The length of the cable can be easily shortened by wrapping more times around the tree before pulling it back through the loop. They are small and light weight compared to rebar. This has worked well for me and you do what works well for you.
