This is a creators review of the Razer Core X and NVIDIA Gigabyte RTX 3060ti External GPU in conjunction with my Dell XPS 9570. I am building a rig since my MSI gaming laptop died. I was thinking why not try this out since I have the NVIDIA RTX 3060ti card. I have my XPS 9570 that is still rocking it with editing software. Great laptop so if this works why build a rig???? right???
Goal: Is it worth it for creators and should you buy it.

just wanted to add you didn't see an improvement because the eGPU was not selected. depending on what software you used for the video export/render it likely did not give you an option to select the eGPU. Most software did not have this feature until recently and many still don't really support eGPUs. So there is no easy way to select the eGPU apart from running the application with specific parameters to manually select the eGPU from command line. How it is supposed to work is that you select the eGPU in the software settings first before doing the render/export. But there is no option for this. Not even in adobe premiere, blackmagic fusion or even final cut pro. I think Blender now has GPU select, and the others are catching up. NVIDIA and AMD drivers also needed to sort a lot of things out on eGPU settings. The 3060ti should have had a massive performance increase over the 1050ti. But it was not doing anything. I bet you all benchmarks actually ran on the 1050ti and the 3060ti just sat there doing nothing. The new Ryzen 7 6800U chip from AMD has Thunderbolt support and the Ryzen 7000 will have native Thunderbolt, so eGPUs should become a lot more popular since Thunderbolt was only really on Intel. Either way, eGPUs work far better on gaming.

Hey nikos, thx for the video, great user perspective! I think you got the bail on the head: eGPU is great for workloads that output to the monitor connected to the eGPU, but not for offloading work to the gou (like rendering/encoding). Here's why: that speed of 40Gb/s that's to the eGPU and back! The CPU spikes you see are the CPU collecting data from the GPU, and sending new data to it. That's where this bottleneck is most pronounced.
@NikosRentas
@NikosRentas 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and I did do tests with the timings. The GPU acceleration turned on with both the laptop and eGPU running you could see the spikes with the different software. Windows looked like it was trying to control the flux the best it could to avoid it. Very interesting to say the least.

I have mine connected to a desktop using a 5900X with an RTX Titan. I have a RTX 3090 in the computer so with that and the Titan in the eGPU my render times in Octane are around 40% faster.. that's a significant time saver over multiple frames. I was worried about the transfer speed of 40gb being an issue but when I compare benchmark tests to people who have a similar set up without an eGPU, meaning they have 2 video cards directly in the motherboards pCIE slots.. my results are pretty close to theirs. So yeah, it seems in your case the CPU was the culprit for sure.

Niko congrats on the content, greetings from Greece, really appreciated. I have a razer blade with a 2080 in and considering getting the chroma x and adding an Rtx 3090. My main concern is since chroma x is Pcie 3.0, wouldn’t that bottleneck and throttle my 3090 that is pcie 4.0 ? I need it for blender 3D rendering . Would please help me out on this issue explaining what and If I should reconsider not doing it in terms of performance?

What software did you use? What was the video footage like? Were there graphics-intensive tasks within the project? If we are transcoding a simple 6K to 4K clip, then for example Adobe Premiere will not use the video processor at all

eGPUs weren't really designed for non-gaming applications, and they aren't designed to pair with devices that can already game comfortably. They're designed for exactly the test that it performed the best at - passing through to an external monitor and allowing gaming on laptops that couldn't do it before. It's not for someone with a gaming laptop to get a slight upgrade. It's more for someone with, say, a Surface Laptop to now have a 3070 Ti they can plug into and play some games. That's the value proposition. If you already have a Razer Blade 14, getting a Core X probably isn't valuable for you. If you have a Lenovo ThinkPad or something, yeah, now we're talking.
@iraklyb
@iraklyb 2 жыл бұрын
I am sorry but you're not completely correct with the review and with the setup. 1.The cable is short because the speed of the transfer is slower as the cable is longer. 2. You compare similar products 1050i vs 1060. If you already spend the money on egpu get the 2070 or higher. 3. The egpu will drop 10-20 degrees c from the cpu because the cpu and internal gpu are on the same cooler so the cpu gets more room to breathe. Unfortunately i have lenovo thinkpads (p15, p53,x1 extreme..) and they all throttle so getting the heat of the internal gpu out will help. 4. Don't connect to the usb of the egpu because you're using thunderbolt to get them back to the laptop. 5. Use external monitor only so that the video won't get back to the laptop again hurting your thunderbolt bandwidth
@NikosRentas
@NikosRentas 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and your points. Length can slow down the transfer, it is insignificant when it comes to a cable that could be 2x or 3x the size. I was comparing a 3060ti card not a 1060. Your last 2 points are about thunderbolt. The speed of the thunderbolt will support the bandwidth. It's around 40Gb/s. The issue is more with it coming back in and having the CPU to work harder. So yes, connecting your monitors to the unit instead of your computer would be smarter and is the intent of this system.

This is one of the biggest things people fail to mention when reviewing any eGPU, temperature. Razers are notorious for running HOT, but with an external GPU I'm consistently shaving about 10 degrees off of my temp under load.

I have a doubt like I have a 2020 variant 1650 laptop so with i5-10gen I was thinking to buy external graphic card as mine supports thunderbolt 3 also I have never experienced thermal throttling or any kind of thermal issue in mine. So should I go for it ? And also there are so many egpu cases which one is best for rtx3060 ?
@NikosRentas
@NikosRentas 2 жыл бұрын
A tad delayed in responding. If you didn't buy one yet, I went with the Core X cause I didn't need more features with my rtx3060ti. Some others have more features. This did the job well but again its based on what you need it for. If you are hoping a big jump from the 1650 I don't see it being that big. However, you will see improvements. I just didn't see significant with my video editing.

Wait so how do you hook up an external monitor to display the laptop without hindering performance? Do you hook the monitor up to the core x or to the laptop still?
@NikosRentas
@NikosRentas 3 жыл бұрын
You hook it up to the graphics card not the core x. The core x connects to the laptop via thunerbold 3. The screen connects to the graphics card. You can use HDMI or display ports.

hi so is this work it or not ? it be this or the chroma 3070ti or a 3080ti i could put in it i was looking at doing full build pc and i seen razer laptop which has 2080 super in and the cpu Processor Number:10875H full model RZ09-03305W53-R3W1 If you know if that would work well let me know as that might be better option im looking to game and also edit videos sometimes on the go and also do graphic Ray tracing work with unreal so if i can do stuff on the go and then do more power when indoors would this be a good solution ?
@NikosRentas
@NikosRentas 3 жыл бұрын
You will get a bump up in speed compared to my 3060ti that I used in testing. The sizes look like they would fit. The process on your laptop is strong enough and the 2080 super is great still. Again, the same pro's and con's would be realized for you as with me but those cards would be faster. It's a good workable solution but you won't get that wow factor. With a 2080 card you are getting a lot of power if you think about. External monitors will benefit however hugely. At the end of the day if you do go for it you can always flip both the card and case or buy them from somewhere you can return to test it out.

You will see improvement as from what I can see none of the models have a graphics card in them. Just on board graphics. So don't have high expectations but improvement yes. Your bottle neck will be the 16GB ram as 32GB should be the go to upgrade for use with any of the adobe products.

Just don’t expect an egpu to do anything more for u if u have a quad core cpu or some 2015 laptop stuff, it’s more worth it to buy or build an entire new pc for someone in that space.

@@tomtom9792 you’re prolly gonna get the new drip thinking this shit is gonna “double ur performance” or what but the chances are that it ain’t gonna do much at all, you probably won’t even feel like it added any improvements… See, the thing is, you are being bottlenecked by the old stuff that u alrd have. If you’re gonna shell out $1000 and more on an egpu but u have an old laptop, I say, u might as well chip in a couple hundred more and get a whole new computer.
@Gunbardo

@@tomtom9792 Mate, that thing has an 11th gen cpu, alrd has a dedicated mobile 16xx gpu. Idk where u heard it, but say u add a 2nd full sized 16xx egpu, thats probably only gonna give u maybe a 20-30% improvement, but then by itself that blade alrd performs well… If you’re however someone who owns a 5-10 year old stuff (aka, 4th/5th gen cpu), the egpu will be bottlenecked and you should also only be able to churn out similar amounts of extra performance. Literally not very useful in both cases. Egpu only works well for someone who has low to no graphics but a powerful enough cpu, which presents itself a very rare use case because most manufacturers almost never make that kind of combination.

Hey man, my xps 15 9570 with the i7 struggles a lot with thermal throttling, basically my fps drops all the time and its really unplayable. How would an egpu help me in my case? Will my cpu still overheat?
@NikosRentas
@NikosRentas 2 жыл бұрын
Basically if you are using an eGPU connected to external monitors there will be a difference as your laptop won't struggle and you can even manually turn off the laptop video card. When I turned mine off it didn't throttle. The XPS is notorious for overheating. I would be looking at flipping it and going for something different if its gaming that you want.

You are getting a big bump between the two gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-3070-Ti-vs-Nvidia-RTX-3060-Ti/4116vs4090. Is your friend correct? Well depends. our 3d Modelling will be similar to my video editing. I think you are going to have similar results. At kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gMqeabqnvrPLY2g.html go through my stats. The bottle neck becomes the cpu in this case. Anything external like monitors will be flawless and you will be able to do more when it is rendering to the screen. But speed wise for overall render of final product I think you will have the same issue as me.
@iraklyb
@iraklyb 2 жыл бұрын
First of all you can underclock the cpu in intel extreme utility so the throttling won't happen anymore after you release the internal gpu of it's duties. Some 3d programs will benefit from a quadro card and some from a gaming card. Check what the benchmarks of that program say. 3070 is way better than 3060. Quadro is more for the CAD orientation.

@NikosRentas
@NikosRentas 2 жыл бұрын
You should be able to however it depends on the mini Pc. You sill need a thunderbolt 3 to connect. Make sure the specs are all compatible. I have not tested this but again, this would be something to search and for with people that have tested it. I would say if the specs fit it shouldn't be an issue. Just make sure it is thunderbolt 3 connected or you won't have enough data pull through.

So when you start it up you may need to enable it as some laptops do not pick it up right away. You should install the card drivers before hand and you should see it come up. On my XPS I had both the internal and external come up. Some laptops have to have the internal turned off for the laptop to pick it up. Last thing to note, the computer may have a thunderbolt that isn't a true thunderbolt or is proprietary and may not work.
