I've just plastered a bedroom with this extra time and it was the least stressful plastering I've done it's worth it for the right mentality. Also I found I didn't need as much water when mixing up a 25kg bag I managed to get it down to 10.5 litres compared to Blaine's recommended 12.5 litres my first mix just kept sliding off my trowel and the float maybe the plaster manufacturer has altered something. A big up to blaine and his advice and recommendations for anything to do with plastering I'm slowly doing up the whole house thanks to him 👍

Trade tips for you all from DR Building Solutions from south Yorkshire cream of tartar is old school same as adding a bit of liquid brick dye in the PVA glue when your prepping the walls and ceiling you know where you've been then it's easy to see with the liquid brick dying it and when you got smooth walls or ceiling or just need a key back ground for the plaster buy SBR and a bag of silica sand put it in a big painter bucket mix it together and then roll it on with a 1/4 to 3/8 nap paint roller depends on the background great video keep them up all the best pal by the way i am old school plasterer and I now use refina plaziflex and speedskims and a 54 volt DeWalt plaster mixer just shows you how things have change and are so much easier and faster

Nice vid, we don’t do much plaster over here in the states It’s nearly impossible to find retarder but even harder to find someone who knows how to work with it. I got my hands on gold bonds version and using it with USG Diamond which sets up pretty quick and always gives me hell. About to give it a shot wish me luck

I've always mixed the extra time in water then add the plaster to that mixed water. I find it makes it creamy and does give you about 30 mins extra. Great for big hits. Used it all through summer of 2022 because of the heat and worked a treat. Can get used to using it real quick. Don't use on small areas tho as your be waiting all day lol.

years ago, for the finish white coat, which was finish quality lime soaked in water over night, then mixed with gauging plaster on the mortar board. Gauging plaster is actually a plaster of paris product, and available i a slow set and a quick set version. Lots of plasterers used cream of tarter in the mix as a retarder. Just a very small amount, would be enough.
@ianthompson9058

I use cream of tartar. Does the same thing only cheeper and you can just go to tesco for it (other supermarkets are available!) only thing is I'd add it to the water first. It distributes better. Great work tho pal👍👌

Loving your stuff and learning loads. I have always used a thinner mix on the 2nd coat, this way even if it doesn't go off as quick the second coat will be thicker, would you recommend this for a beginner like me. I was looking at the retarder because during the really hot weather the 1st coat has picked up really quickly recently. Cheers by the way.
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely but make sure it's not too thin - you still need a decent thickness on the second coat so make sure it has a little substance. Yeah, Extratime definitely helps in the summer mate. My mix's have been setting rapid ha!

I'm a joiner by trade, but I've done a hell of a lot of plastering over the years as part of kitchen fits etc. I get a decent 2-coat finish but in no way would I regard myself as a 'proper' plasterer. I was gobsmacked at watching you do the walls, internals and ceiling all in one hit. I've only ever attempted ceilings first, then opposing walls, then infills round window reveals and so on, letting each section firm up solid before moving on with the next bit, and with a paintbrush line of PVA on the new opposite solid corner to stop it from sucking out. I have absolutely no idea how you get a sharp internal without letting the other wall go off first. What's the secret? How the hell do you get it sharp without getting snots or trowel marks all over the other wet wall? PS - I use Extratime regularly now, it stops me from panicking when I'm doing big ceilings .......

IMHO - DO NOT USE EXTRATIME. twice now I've pre-mixed 1 packet in water per 25kg bag of multifinish as per instructions. Both times its ruined the job. Dries with a crazed pattern of cracking. Read Amazon reviews and same thing has happened to others. A lot more positive reviews, but is it worth the risk of ruining your hard work?
