Mitchell has officially had his F-150 Lightning for a year and we are going to go over the good, the bad, and the ugly. Starting off with something absolutely amazing about this truck is this mega power frunk. This has been absolutely amazing for storage and tailgating. Going to the bed of the truck, one bad thing we have noticed is the condensation in the light bar. We know this is a recall for Ford, and we see that it is also happening on this Lightning. A good thing about the bed is the extra charging with up to 7.2 kilowatts worth of max power coming out of the bed of the vehicle. Now onto the inside of the F-150 Lightning, We still absolutely love the center console shifter and the interior work surface. Now hoping into fast charging. After keeping track of all the times Mitchell has fast charged, it has been 32 times, which comes out to $248 spent on fast charging. Long story short is with the current price of gas, you'd be looking at $3,045 and if Mitchell were to have paid for the entire year himself it would only have come out to around $1,200 which is a big difference. The last thing that is absolutely amazing about this vehicle is Bluecruise. Ford is even coming out with an updated Blue Cruise that will allow you to switch lanes handsfree. You just hit the blinker and it changes lanes for you. Overall this vehicle has been absolutely amazing the last year!

What exactly is/was the "different kind of job"? If he said it I missed it. And I missed it because by two minutes into this video it became very obvious to me this is no "honest review," it's a sales pitch. That's when I stopped watching.

@JonathanStewartMusic That is actually one feature I am not really taking advantage of at the moment. Most of my current small tools are battery powered (Dewalt 20v) and my larger tools are gas powered. That will probably change in the future now that I have the lightning's power available to me but for now I'll use my current tools until they burn out.

I guess I shouldn't comment while the video is playing, but now that it is finished you are spot on regarding costs of energy. I am spending about 42% of what I spent on my previous Audi SQ5 which got really good mileage. I only pay 12.6 cents in Central Indiana for my electricity so i am very pleased. I also bought the Ford Maintenance Package from Flood Ford and with 8 years, 100k mileage it cost a little over $800 dollars just as you explained in your oil change example. It is not for everyone, but great around town as you state, when we pull our 5th Wheel we use my F450 which is built for such tasks.

Excellent video. I have had my XLT Lightning since last year. 2 weeks after I got it, I took my daughter to college in Florida (from Michigan), so the cross-country thing done right away. Even the infrastructure has really improved since then, but looking forward to the Tesla network in 2024. Most of my charging is at home with my Ford Charging Station Pro that DTE helped me get hooked up. I really cannot tell if there is an increase in my electric bill. Feels like the charging cost is a wash, especially with the time-of-day plan they have me on now. I have the extended range battery and can see that I should get over 300 miles on a charge, but simply not reasonable. One thing I like that GM has done is give the expected range with something reasonable like 2.1 mi/kWh rather than expecting folks to drive so slowly (they estimated this on their Silverado EV). If you drive 500 miles of some city and some highway, you could come out to 2.0 or 2.1, but no way you're getting much better if you drive it like you stole it. I hope a standard is set like that and future vehicles get measured against it, instead of promising massive range, etc. I got the tax credit on mine last year, but that being said, comparing the loan remaining for me and the value of the truck on KBB, I am upside down a little on the loan to value after a year and a month. I don't have Blue Cruise, but I wish I did. Looks like you're enjoying it. The acceleration of the Lightning is my favorite thing. It's a rocket. I love it.

Maybe you’ll be able to part with it in 8 years when the battery replacement cost makes you weep. If you try to sell it right before that replacement, you’ll get significantly les than “blue-book” value because any informed buyer of used vehicles factors “planned maintenance” into their offers and dealership won’t be touching them unless you buy an overpriced new one. Good luck.

Nice review. It does summarize the most important factor for any vehicle purchase; use case. For the average person, their use case make these lightnings a great option for a lot of people but they listen to people who have never used one or who have a vastly different use case.

Fair to say , but it remains to be seen how these things will pan out as the years roll on , the range is only fair when the vehicle is brand new , how much will the range diminish in say 4 or 5 years , or 10 or 12: years , and if the range does get too bad , how much is that gigantic battery going to cost to replace ? And as we see these units , they are either very new or not old , and I don’t see any accessories on them like roll bars , driving lights , a winch , big chunky rims and tyres , etc. All these things where very common on conventional pick ups , how is the range going to when people stop using them like precious toys.

What an honest appraisal of this car - I for one cannot understand all the hate for EVs they are just cars powered in a different way. They offer some awesome benefits but they also have their drawbacks. Let’s stop politicising the issue - if it does the job better then buy it after you try it. If not then don’t- it’s as simple as that - keep up the good work 👍

My year will be next month and I should have 36k miles by then. I would like to get the drive unit fluid changed and sent off for testing, can one of your locations handle that? My luck with local dealerships has been bad. My lightbar was full of water and shorting out the lights 3 months in and my dealership said that was normal, I had to go through 2 more to find one to replace it under warranty. I still love the truck.

I really like the Lightning. I ended up with a 2022 Platinum Hybrid. I tow a camper so it seemed a better choice for my needs. I have been highly impressed with it too. I got 25.2 and then 25.4 mpg in a town driving around in the Helen Georgia area this summer- not towing of course. Towing I get about the same as my previous F150- 12mpg. (PS. These mpg figures are not from the truck computer but at the pump figures).

Impressive numbers Mitchell. When the lightning pro debuted for $39,995 I was very excited for the truck. (Not that you could actually get one at that price). The thing that turned me off was the fact that when the govt announced the $7,500 tax credit on these trucks Ford jacked up the price so high it completely negated the tax credit benefit for the consumer. I will stick with gas until it's no longer an option. Ford doesn't care about their customers, but I think that's true of all corporations these days.
@PianoBoy99
@PianoBoy99 9 ай бұрын
Have corporations ever done anything where they care about their customers more than shareholders? Ford raised the prices because they had significant demand (you know. That free market thing), and because the costs of producing it rose significant throughout the pandemic. As more production flows and the initial demand wave subsides, I guarantee you that they will lower the prices. Don't "not buy" something because a company raises the prices. You need to "not buy" it because the price/value isn't there anymore. If you would buy an electric car at 40k with a 7.5k rebate, would you buy it at 50k? 60k? Are you buying your gas truck for 32k? (or less if you factor in fuel costs).? Sticking with "gas until it is no longer an option" sounds like a political statement, not a consumer one. That's your choice of course, but don't pretend it isn't anything other than that.

@PianoBoy99 my current gas truck I paid $32,498 for. I bought it new. 2wd (I don't get that much snow where I live) and it does great. Also no I won't spend 50k on any vehicle electric, gas or otherwise.
@PianoBoy99
@PianoBoy99 9 ай бұрын
@@liamfirebird6922 Then that is good. You are waiting for the low-cost trucks to come on the market. Which will happen after the higher end is saturated first. No problem. Or perhaps when the used market kicks up. And that 60k lightening with 70k miles goes for 25k in the used market. That will happen eventually as well. The market just isn't where you need it to be yet. That's not a problem. I just hope it plays out the way you want it to. One thing I'm worried about is that between covid and electric vehicle transition auto makers will no longer make low-cost vehicles. They will just refuse to do it. In which case consumers like you will be in the lurch. That won't be fair, and I hope it doesn't happen.
@liamfirebird6922
@liamfirebird6922 9 ай бұрын
@PianoBoy99 I hope so. Charging would be much cheaper than gas! I really was psyched for the Lightning. I'm an admin worker in a factory so I get the costs going up. But Ford literally announced their price increase the same week the tax credit hit. That just rubbed me the wrong way I guess.

This is a great video and very informative. As a Rivian owner, I really like the extra outlets in the frunk and the fold-flat work surface. However the thumbnail and the "am I gonna sell it blah blah" are click-baitey and trite. A shame to turn away viewers so early in an otherwise informative video. Edit: on a personal note, where I live electricity is .05 cents per kWh. So I pay around $60/mo. to charge. Prior to that I was paying $200-$300 or more per month for gas. It's a huge savings, but most importantly being able to charge at home means less time driving to gas stations, waiting in line and pumping gas, which ultimately means being able to spend more time at home with my family. That is the ultimate value of an EV to me. 🙂

We have a really good electric co-op (NOVEC) which gets a lot of their power from biomass and other renewable sources (they even reclaim methane from the local dump to provide power). We charge our EV at night as well as schedule most major appliances, including running the AC at night (for sleeping). Keeps our electric bill low. 😊

True. These vehicles certainly aren't for everyone. I'm actually happy about that because our electrical grid simply isn't ready for that. And if I hadn't had 2 vehicles to trade in on my lightning platinum, I probably wouldn't have been able to afford it. Being 74 and single my lightning replaces my 2018 prius that I normally drove and my 2014 F150 that I need to haul and tow things. Those 2 got my price down to about $50k and didn't have to pay sales tax on the trades. Perfect truck for me local use only charge at home only. Beats the 10 mpg I got with my F150 and even beats the 50+ mpg I got with my prius. I have no complaints about range ever.

Wow $1200 for the entire year for charging cost is darn impressive. Even though my electric utility says $0.08/kw, my EV charging costs are technically $0.14/KW after I add the distribution fees and sales tax. To fill up an F150 in Ottawa Canada today is about $195 to $200. It’s $1.75/litre, and the big tank is 136 litres (36 US gallons). Assuming a 110 L fill up, it’s about $192 to fill it up. Thanks for making this video. My question is what kind of efficiency can a normal person get driving 120 km/h (70 mph)?

@pstoneking3418
@pstoneking3418 9 ай бұрын
That still depends on your stop and go driving habits and the model. My platinum being heavier usually averages 2 mpk driving mostly 55 mph roads with a little 70 mph and a little stop & go city driving. I have gotten 2.4 mpk when driving a little slower than the speed limits. To be honest public chargers are very expensive. I believe the cheapest cost is around $.32/kwh and normally closer to $.43/kwh. I do believe even with the extended range battery a lariat or xlt will get better range than my platinum does. I only charge at home and only drive locally. Towing can nearly cut my range in half, but that also was the case with my gas F150. People just don't seem to pay much attention to that. We never get something for nothing, those that say differently about Towing anything are not telling the truth. Hauling, range isn't affected quit so much. I love my lightning but isn't a truck for long distance traveling or towing because you must depend on public chargers.

Is the charging speed an issue? I liked the video. Dealer here says there can’t sell them. Guessing due to the interest rates. They’re making a new trim between xlt and lariat. I wish they made it look different than the ice one. The Silverado has a unique look to it

Great video Mitchell but I am surprised you do not have a spray in bed liner, it really helps control scratches and keep it looking nice. I also have a bedrug which is really helpful on the knees when moving around trees or shrubs in spring planting season. I really hope to own one of these in a few years. Hopefully after we get settled in a house so I can have a home charger hooked up, and also by then they should have any little bugs worked out with it. They just seem to suit my every need. I like having a truck, but I simply don't tow much. I use the bed and 4wd enough to still need a truck, but I don't exactly tow much at all, and all the extra storage would be perfect. Plus they're fast af and I love that lol.

I don't see anything about V2H... the base battery on this thing is 7.5x Powerwall... that's almost the price of the Truck. Yes, it'll cost you a few more grand for the hardware to connect the Truck to the House, but if you're looking for battery backup, I think this is one of the best solutions. The rest is gravy.

Exactly why I put the $down when they announced it. I can't justify just spending a lot on just a car, but this is my back up generator, my mobile power back (powered my camper after towing it). And it's so much cheaper to operate.

A friend has a Lightning Lariat 1. Towing is a killer, less than half the range towing a 3,500 lb. boat/trailer. 2. The charging infrastructure is terrible, broken units and less than available charging speeds. It’s not so much range anxiety, it’s remote charging anxiety.

I enjoyed this video but would like to know what you paid per kwh when fast charging. It was about $.43/kwh or about $.32/kwh if you paid a $4 monthly fee. That would be $21.50 - $16.00 per 100 miles respectively if you averaged 2 mpk. Since then like everything the prices have gone up.

There is always an additional charge that most people don't realize. But once again we never get something for nothing. Whenever AC is converted to DC there's a loss. So for every say 50 kwh used by the truck it will take more than 50 kwh of electricity to replace that 50 kwh that was used. The loss isn't great but like everything, over time it adds up.
