I have over 3000 hours in this remarkable machine. From below sea level (Death Valley) to 63000' & from the equator to 80 deg north - it never let me down. Nothing but fond memories. What a life.

Pratt& Whitney F100 engines, as older F‐16s too I go to Nellis AFB and at perimeter gate on landings overhead you hear intermittent whiz and short bursts of roar from throttle adjustment especially landing in crosswind days.

It’s called EOR…end of runway. There are crew chiefs and weapons guys down there that give a last look, shake things down and pull the pins. Did it for 6 years. You don’t have “unsafe” munitions on the flight line where they park. Inert or not, they are treated as live. SOP. The tanks have impulse carts (cartridges) in them so the pilot can drop them if need be…and they are explosive..that’s why those are pinned.

how is it that we retire the F-14 but yet we still keep the F-15 around didn't they both get built around the late 70's
@spencerhughes2255
@spencerhughes2255 Жыл бұрын
F-14 first flew in 1970 and the F-15 in 1972 so yes they came out around the same time but Navy jets wear out fast because they often fly over the ocean with all the salt water air, they take hard hits when landing on carriers. Also F-14's required about 40 hours of maintenance on the ground for every hour they were in the air. F-15's don't fly over the ocean as much, they never land on carriers and only about 12 hours of maintenance for every hour they're in the air. That's just 3 reasons and I'm sure there are more. I miss the F-14. Saw it many times as a kid. My all-time favorite plane.

Sounds like an onboard electric starter? Then once the primary engine is lit, it sounds like it diverts bypass air to the second engine to start it? Someone let me know if I'm right, it sure sounded that way.
@justing42
@justing42 Жыл бұрын
Jet fuel starter…turns the gear box on the engine. Then repeats for the other engine…I copied a detailed description below. The F-15 uses a smaller jet engine, that is mounted to a gearbox, through a bulkhead, situated between the engines. The smaller Jet engine, is known as the JFS, or Jet Fuel Starter. The gearbox is called the CGB, or,Central Gear Box. Other components related to the starting of aircraft engines, are the JFS bottle(of which there are 2), the AMAD, or Airframe Mounted Accessory Drive, and the PTO(Power Take Off) shaft. The Bottles are filled with hydraulic fluid, that is put under pressure, by nitrogen pumped into the apparatus. They are connected to a T-handle, in the cockpit. The AMADs are mounted on bulkheads, directly in front of the engines, and are mated through the bulkhead, with the PTO shaft. On engine start, the pilot turns on the starter switch, to energize the system, and pulls the T-handle, forcing the pressurized hydraulic fluid through the CGB, to spin the JFS. Fuel is routed to the JFS, and an igniter fires the engine. Once operational, the JFS then spins the gearbox. On the throttle are 2 finger lift switches, designated for each engine. Lifting the switch extends a shaft, from the gearbox, to a coupler on the AMAD, called a pawl carrier. This spins the gears inside the AMAD, which then spins the PTO shaft, and in turn, the engine. Once the combustion section of the engine fires up, the pawl carrier disconnects Pilot pulls the finger lift on the unstarted engine, and the process repeats. The JFS cuts off automatically after both engines have started.
