Test pilot Major Desmond Brophy (Canadian Air Force Exchange pilot) gives a tour of an F-16 Fighting Falcon (aka Viper) cockpit used for flight testing at Edwards Air Force Base.
If you're wondering what test pilots are doing in a relatively senior and proven airframe, the answer lies in continuous improvement and the fact that the airframe itself is far from the only thing that changes the flight characteristics of a modern fighter. These aircraft are inherently unstable and, though they are flown by pilots, it's computers that keep them in the air. When changes are made to the hardware software or weapons systems that give these aircraft their edge, test pilots are sent up to evaluate the effects of those changes on the aircraft's performance, capability and controllability. Truly amazing piece of engineering that stems from the early 70's... and such a beautiful aircraft also... It's like building an Formula 1 car in the 70's and it looks almost exactly the same 2018 but have a different engine, steering wheel and brakes... but looks exactly the same as the 70's F1...

13 years later, I gotta agree. Obviously we don't know what the cockpit of the Raptor is like, but in terms what we do actually know, the Viper is the best designed fighter jet ever. Not saying it's the best, just that it's design is perfect. That cockpit view is unmatched. I've seen enough DCS vids to know that.

I read about him in a magazine somewhere, I think it was Canadian Aviator Monthly or something. Interesting job he has, I think he is also testing the new virtual helmet system for use on the F-22 and F-35 with the F-16.

I think it was in July, some time around Christmas, of 1776 that he got shot down by one of Taiwan’s air-to-air missiles while flying above Tucson, AZ. He told me he’ll never forget the day those Angolan A380’s that nearly shot him down one time.

2:24 The pilot seat position is the best I’ve seen on a fighter jet. I would define the pilot position as “intimate” with the jet, where the man become one thing with the machine. I’ve ride sport bikes for 10 years, the thing I quickly became addicted was the unique sensation to be “part” of the bike because of the rider position. Someone once said that flying a fighter jet is like riding a missile. I think never a metaphor was more appropriate and I bet that metaphor is more real then ever when flying the F16 Viper.

Cockpit is actually more comfortable than it looks, because the seat is tilted back 30 degrees--Lazy Boy style! It looks like his knees would hit the instrument panel during an ejection, but they won't, again due to the extreme back-tilt, he'll slide out from under there. I'm ah ex-pert, 'cause I sat in one (plus a simulator) at an industry air show, lol...

I used to drive a 2 seater BMW M Coupe. The window view was a lot like the F-16, with the window sills much lower than most cars, and the seats up high. It's an awesome feeling.

As far as communications, do pilots in a flight communicate over a preset or predetermined radio frequency on COMM 1 or 2, or is there a separate intercom type communication? I was told the Intercom interface on the left console is for communication with the ground crew only.

so how do you tell? and what do you mean by a block 30d? I was going on the HUD, its not a 40/42, which leaves the 30 and 50. from memory the CCIP program updated some older blocks with the newer antennae, so I guess it could also be a 30. so how do you tell the 30 and 50 blocks apart?

People won’t believe me but one of my parents work with the f16, and one day they needed to give something to some one and I saw all the f16s, I’ve seen a lot more planes other than the f16s given the fact that I used to live on the base a couple months ago then I moved some were off base, planes are so cool especially when you can really see them when ever you want and they fly over your home every day

How much is the angle that the F-16 stick can be tilted?Someone told me it doesn't move at all but I think I have read that it has a range of 1-2 degrees.What is true?

Many Countries practice this. RAF pilots in Canadian CF18's, Canadians in German Eurofighters. I believe the idea is cross training and sharing ideas and skills among allies to make everyone stronger together.

Are modern and updated fighter aircraft equipped with a helmet mounted sight and display system similar to the F-35’s helmet system that allows pilots to look at and lock onto targets without having to lineup their aircraft and target the enemy using their HUD? I would hope that with the technology available today that pilots no longer have to rely solely on their HUD for targeting and other systems like they have for decades.

@k2477456 They could be fitted on the sides of the HUD... Anyway you don't really need them since there is a radar on the plane so you will know if someone is behind you.
