Suspension! A bouncy enigma! Even more so in F1 as you can't really see any of it - it's all hidden and tiny inside the nose. So let's have a look at what suspension is, why we need it and how F1 cars' suspension is designed for ultimate packaging. Here we cover the layout of suspension, pushrod and pullrod systems, dampers and torsion bars.

To make it even better: the reason we have hybrid v6 engines now is to offer a breeding ground for technology that is actually useful in road cars, unlike those brawly v10's etc. To me personally it feels like the FIA and the teams made a conscious decision to reduce the competitiveness of the sport in trade for greater technological advancement.

Incredible stuff as always! Welcome back! Another video idea if I may: once the new f1 2021 game comes out, maybe try to explain in one video what each setup choice will do to the car and where to start, what impacts what etc (you can link your previous, more detailed videos at each setup choice then). It does not need to be perfect as codemasters do not code the perfect reality but just so people get the point :) I think this would be an instant hit and it is something no one on KZfaq could properly explain to me yet!

I have a sort of correction: a torsion bar is a spring, it’s essentially a coil spring that’s been straightened out, and when it’s torsioned, that’s the same process that happens to a coil spring, a coil spring is also being torsioned in the same way in order to compress.
@EscapeMCP
@EscapeMCP 3 жыл бұрын
I also have a correction (I think - not 100% though). When he has the diagram of the wheel at say 7:21, the wheel tilts. Surely the wheel should move directly up and down. No rotation. The 2 wishbones form 2 sides of a parallelogram. If the wishbones are not attached to the chassis immediately above and below each other, then the tyre should only move up and down and not tilt?? Maybe he's saving that for the next vid :)

And also, what's with the magic bump @ 2:34? Are active roads becoming a thing in 2021?

Finally....never seen a clear explanation of f1 suspension basics before. Another kudo from a f1 fan. In many cases, there is a basic assumption that all fans know what is being discussed when terms like torsion bar are thrown around, or when great import is placed on the height and position of the visible elements.
