F1 teams are always trying to make their tyre pressures as low as possible. Even though Pirelli say it's dangerous. What's going on?

Look: Martin is doing the best he can. He's got a colicky newborn at home and is rarely getting a good night's sleep (some paternity leave would be nice!). And *no one asked* Jenny to file that TPS report. It wasn't due for another three weeks--I'm not saying Jenny's not a phenomenal worker, but if she's at risk of burnout, some of that has got to be on her, and maybe she should be asking herself if she's burying herself in her work to avoid dealing with other problems in her life.

To be honest I think the last sentence of your video is incorrect: Pirelli knows how to make good tires. Instead of them we should ask FIA and FOM. Pirelli is producing tires based on their wish to make every race unpredictable like it was at the 2010 Canadian GP.

yes exactly this! And this is going on as you said since 10 years. I think Formula 1 don't even know anymore what they want from the tires and from Pirelli. Some seasons they want 3 stops in a race, some seasons we have 1 stops. It's too complicated, they should just make a clean slate, ask the teams, do some proper research, ask Pirelli and decide on a normal tire which is the best for F1.

to add these tires are the 2019 spec if im not mistaken, pirelli were asked to make tires for the 2019 cars and now going into the 2021 season these same tires will be used because of covid. So these tires are experiencing load and will experience load over the next season that they were not designed to handle. Unless im confusing this with another bit of information

This can apply to other things than F1 cars too. For example, a highway car tire will typically have an "average" tire pressure of 35PSI. A big, bulky off-roading tire will have less stresses placed on it when used in muddy rocky terrain, but the drivers will want even more of that deformation and conforming to this rough ground, to ensure they get as much contact as they can. As such, offroad tires are run with lower pressures. Bicycles (where most of my experience is) have this as well, but because loading is so low in a bicycle, you generally don't have to worry about temperature or the tire tearing itself apart. You do, however, have to worry about rolling resistance and ride quality (suspension is completely optional on a bicycle), and grip can be a concern if you ride off road. A road bike's pencil thin tires will often be inflated to frighteningly high pressures to get the lowest rolling resistance possible, maximizing speed. My road hybrid calls for around 65PSI, and racing bikes can go well into the 100PSI territory. A comfort or cruiser bike will usually run a rather middling 35PSI, but can be adjusted up and down from here depending on the kind of riding you want to do, with lower pressures absorbing bumps better. For my commutes, I would often run them at 45PSI for wear and ease of pedaling. An off road trail or mountain bike has the same concerns as a off road truck tire, and will run lower pressures still. My mountain bike calls for as low as 25PSI for best performance off road, and "fat tire" bikes can be staggeringly low at only 10PSI - in fact they can get so low as they can deform completely and allow the rim to strike the terrain through the tire during hard riding, puncturing it and leaving you stranded.

There's various different factors at play in terms of tires. For example different tire compounds will react differently under different conditions like the F1 slick tires whose primary purpose is to last a whole season but previde enough traction so that the drivers don't slip slide everywhere or possibly into a barrier.

I was wondering if you could do a video where you explain why so many teams like Racing Point, Mclaren, Red Bull and Renault have all of the sudden decided to go with a Mercedes-style narrow nose this year when they all previously used the wide noses with the little thumb on the end. Was very surprised to see all of them adopting to this design in exactly the same year.

Great video. Rather than ask Pirelli, I'd ask the FIA why they continue to insist on Pirelli with so many tyre failures. If you search tyre failure F1, you'll find failing tyres. Loads of them. If you search in other motorsports, you will find failing car components and watch the tyre bounce away intact on the wheel.

this didn’t tell me anything I didn’t know. in general you run a higher pressure in qualifying or on colder days so the tires get to temp faster. lower pressure for races, especially longer ones so they don’t overheat. I wonder if the pirelli tires have a weird compound which requires lower pressures for decent feel? isn’t this the year they went to larger wheels too? so maybe the shorter sidewalk is throwing the other drivers off

It's all about compromise of cost, materials and performance. For example if you strengthen the joint of the tyre then the tyre would be stiffer by nature and not as malleable due to its construction rather than pressures. If you use exotic materials to provide the integrity and malleability the cost skyrockets and makes no sense in a one tyre manufacturer.

About the question to have it all. It is impossible. There will always be some trade off to get something better for something like a tire. The all around year tires cant both be soft and hard as winter and summer tires are. We can even look at tires designed for off road. 100% off road tires will be destroyed when driving on the road because of how they are made.

Question: Pirelli recommended front tyre pressures around 20 psi (I don't remember exactly) for this weekend. Portimao being a track which is heavy on tyres (elevation changes, braking while turning etc..), so how much the front/rear tyre pressure goes up? Using nitrogen minimises this effect I assume. Anyone? Something remarkable: during an FP Martin Brundle was watching the cars around corner 8-9... And he was describing the cars are oscillating, which included the tyres mainly. 18" tyres will reduce this effect and put strain to the suspension.

One of the few ways FIA can influence car performance is by messing with the tyres. Another failed, yet sometimes successful, tactic at leveling the battleground. Then again, *tyres are such a key component to a car’s Performance,* that even having one single supplier is an oxymoron for their “Pinnacle of Motorsports” claim.

In my semi educated opinion, the reason Pirelli can't design a tire to use incredibly low pressures is that the tire's design would not wear as well as the current tires. The proposed tires would also be heavier which is particularly bad since the tires are far out from the center of rotation, therefore add a ton of unsprung weight.

why does everybody critisize Pirelli? to me it seems pretty much impossible to build the perfect tyre that degrades while not degrading so to speak. Even if you find various compounds that degrade in a very controlled way, so that the different grip levels/laptimes and the artificial degradation are met, there are still so many factors on each track that change this subtile physichemical intermezzo and simply close the window from time to time. that is why they play with pressures, compounds, regulations etc but its just sort of a paradox to make the tyre behave to all conditions, so its the job of the driver to adapt his driving style.

Does that mean that they should just set minimum allowed pressure and be done with it?

Why just make 1 type of tire compound and use that at each race? Like Goodyear decides on which compound is best for each track in NASCAR and the teams have to set up the car for that compound and the driver has to manage the wear during the race..

And Pirelli will tell you it's an FIA directive.

I mean... the FIA does dictate to pirelli what they want from the tires. That was covered previously in an earlier video. The reason the tires are the way they are is because the FIA wants to keep things interesting and apparently interesting means tire go boom. Seriously though I think it’s a little sad that the drivers are complaining about being kept in a safe pressure range that will keep the tire on its expected wear and not blow out randomly only half way into a projected stint. Rules are there for a reason. Lots of them in formula 1 and other motor sports are there to keep you alive. When drivers complain about stuff like that I think they need to take a hard look back at the early days of the sport where death was a normal thing because of lack of safety centric rules and safety features on those early cars and tracks.
