I got laid off after relocating from Israel to California. Was such a big move to do. My manager urged me to sign a lease although I prioritized Airbnbs until I felt fully secure with the company. After a great talk with another manager a few weeks ago, I signed a lease for the perfect apartment near work. The only catch was - the break lease fee is huge. Fast forward a week or two, I got laid off with no notice. My managers who preached empathy and virtue signaled - didn’t bother explaining to me anything and kept flaking out at getting their stuff. I learned a huge lesson, business is just business. Now I’m scrambling to get another job in the US without any huge tech companies on my CV (although Wix, who I left for this company, is pretty big I guess). Any tips for those who aren’t from Meta/Twitter/etc who are still trying to secure their next job?

Why would you need those on your cv to get a new job? Really, "just" be good at your job and have the cv/ portfolio/ personal brand to go with it. Tech workers are sought after unlike other industries. Maybe try a company who is doing public projects (those rely less on the economy) or businesses in evergreen markets such as food, health etc. Or move in with your parents, take time off to recharge and learn a new ux skill. Sometimes when we're the most stressed we have to take a step back and see life for what it is - fleeting moments that will never come back

These people worked at FAANG, I seriously doubt they will have a hard time finding work. This is a great opportunity for them to leverage their experiences and skills in other corps within and outside of Silicon Valley. We have too many engineers /talented people concentrated in SV. It makes the cost of living too high. Let's spread out people. This is a win for everyone.

Pay inflated? The retention and turnover rate of tech companies are so terrible because the pay isn't good enough. Also you think tech companies pay a lot? 🤣 If you're a Quant or an algo engineer at some hedge fund, there's been numerous records of people getting 1 to 2 million dollar wages straight out of college. And even in those companies, people leave due to stress and the pay being not worth. People think 10k people getting fired is a lot but if you look at any article on their engineering retention rate or turnover rate, you'll see that it's not even a drop in the bucket.

I think you did yourself a disservice. Having a faang on your resume opens so many doors to you as an engineer. Companies "LINE UP" to poach engineers leaving faangs, because they know their selection criteria are very high and the experience you get at faangs is unparalleled. Don't be fooled in thinking that layoffs do not happen at smaller companies, they do, and in fact more frequently, and with less benefits. I'm not worried about any of those engineers leaving Meta. On top of that, I already get companies overflowing my email with opportunities and "lining up" to talk with me. Maybe if you guys did actual projects that combined your knowledge of computer science and development, you wouldn't be on your knees to get into these very small amount companies and you surely wouldn't be laid off. Obviously you're going to need to do Leetcode and everything just in case, but these projects are what open every door for me. Then go and find companies like Oil, Energy, Nuclear, Financial and so on. These companies have needs for very hard-core computer science people and they pay stupid amount of money. Does not work like that. Layoffs happen because the previous 10 years era of basically burning money is over. Huge recession is incoming and the big tech companies are anticipating that. I think the layoffs at FAANG companies dramatically and grandiosely changed the attitude towards working in these companies. Previously, it always left the impression of working in a reliable company, but now it has proven to be less secure than working in any startup. There is now an understanding that working at FAANG, especially for non-residents, is a tradeoff in favor of a supposedly higher salary, which is expected to cover the associated risks.

TDD on already "optimized" projects and maintaining untouched legacy codebases is no longer worth 50+ USD. New super hot languages and frameworks that replace C++, Java, Rust, Kotlin and Python are also out of corporate budget.

lol people dont want to work from office, they want a laid back job and wanna moon light. being greedy and ungrateful towards your job and stuff, what does anyone expect? tbh people are overpaid for puny stuff and expect to be treated like kings! what hypocrisy

FANG are always the best tech companies to work in. Unless you don't work in tech field, then you won't want to work there. Companies that actually treat employees like humans. Or maybe you like to work in a company where the employees are to worship their boss like king, even when he is showing signs of insanity. Like Elon Musk is right now

@@pila1280 No they are not the best places lol, most of the time you're building boring products, I prefer to work on startups and build exciting things from the ground up. Software engineer with a decade in the industry.

As a CS student who'll enter the market in just under a year I'm curious on how fresh software engineers fit into this picture? Would those layoffs make it much harder for us to find work with no experience? Are some cities/states gonna be better than others? Does this situation change what kind of positions we should be aiming for? Would be curious if you have any insights

It is harder to enter the job market now unfortunately. Pure tech companies (high anticipated growth) are getting hit the worst in a recession so job seekers may have better chances in more mature, stable industries
