I agree that it was a shame not to include Gandalf's fight, but for me the bigger problem is making the hobbies idiots who are cooking when in immenent danger, and the attack being their fault. But then that is all part of turning Merry and Pippin into comic relief, something they were not in the books, Merry in particular.

Gandalfs fight is definitely cool, but his power is definitely less questioned as hes a wizard. Watching Aragorn absolutely humiliate the Nazgul establishes him as a somewhat superhuman swordsman making the rest of his feats seem more legit.

The scene of the Nazgul hitting the cushions is btw an almost 1:1 adaption from the old 1978 animated film. As know who knew that older film, I found Peter Jackson took more than one scene from this old animated movie.

See, in the LOTR movies, additional scenes that weren't in the books STILL WORK. Second breakfast is one of the most iconic scenes in the trilogy, and you wouldn't know it wasn't in the book. Nowadays, it's so glaringly obvious whether or not somethings in the book.

Short answer is that Jackson disrespected Tolkiens works by leaving out things and inventing new things.it was the Nazgûl who trashed the roo. The inn had two wings with a courtyard. Aragorn’s room was in the other wing on a higher floor while the the Hobbits room was at ground level, designed for Hobbits. It was NOT a gross the road. I waited from 1977 for this book to be made into a movie and while it was well made, it was very bitter sweet to see what was put forth. I never warmed to Elijah Wood, I found his demeanour slightly forced and at times cheesy; whereas Viggo’s casting was perfect. I agree with you about Weathertop but disagree about Bill Ferny. I was appalled at the inn scene where Frodo put the ring on. Why change the book’s story there?

Another great instalment which I enjoyed very much. I would make a couple of points though, one of which could be described as very petty. The minor point is that the Hobbits did not spend the night in Striders room, they stayed in the parlour (where they had eaten supper prior to going into the common room earlier that evening) and where they retreated to after the unfortunate incident with the ring. They rekindled the then dying fire from earlier and see that Strider has followed them into the room. Various discussions between the Hobbits, Strider and Butterbur then take place after which Strider then goes with Nob to get the Hobbits possessions from the Hobbits room. Upon his return Strider bars the widow and door of the parlour in preparation for the night. Whilst I would agree that the culprits responsible for the attack on the Hobbits room where never actually stated, I always concluded it was the Black Riders. The reasons for this is that the 'attack' which caused Merry to pass out, Strider says, was induced by the 'black breath'' Also we know that there are Black Riders within the walls of Bree because Strider tells us that he saw them enter (he doesn't state how many) through the southern gate. Your excellent video has made me rethink the assumption I have held for the last 50 years, because I also recall that Strider clearly stating that he doubts that the Black Riders would attack an inn inhabited by numerous 'people', preferring to conduct an attack in the wild! Sorry for all the nerdiness but if I can't do it on this channel where can I do it? Very much looking forward to the next instalment.

There's no explanation for where Aragorn got those 4 swords... I guess we can assume there is a cache of weapons nearby left behind by Dunedain (in the book, there is an obvious place where the Dunedain stay around Weathertop). It's still a minor plot hole, though, since the short swords the Hobbits got from the Barrow were enchanted blades of Westernesse, designed specifically to combat the Witch-King, perhaps in opposition to things like Morgul-blades, and it gave Merry an advantage later on.

The battle between Gandalf and the Nazgul reminds me that I always thought Gandalf or Aragorn should have killed one Nazgul. Maybe the retreat from Osgiliath with Gandalf. Maybe Aragorn wielding Narsil sometime before the Battle of Minas Tirith. This would play into the paranoia Sauron had and rushed the attack before his forces were ready.
@Klaital1
@Klaital1 12 күн бұрын
The whole point of the Nazgul, and why they were so scary was that it was impossible to kill them permanently as long as the one ring existed. Like they 'killed' all of the Nazgul at the Rivendell ford when the water swept them away, but that basically just sent them back to Mordor to reform. Which is why it was really weird that Tolkien then went against the rules he had set up himself by having the witch king be killed permanently at Pelennor fields.

The film leaves out Gandalf's fight with the Nazgul to make the Ringwraiths more frightening. They have no way to truly fight them, they can only run. Glorfindel and Gandalf could potentially fight them off, maybe even defeat some of them. The presentation of a film story is very different from how a book can present it. It would have broken up the pacing and lessened the audience's dread of the Nazgul to see Gandalf fighting them. Arwen in place of Glorfindel does mention that 5 of the Nazgul are behind the hobbits and Aragorn in pursuit, "where the other four are, I do not know" this is a nod to the books as the 4 are chasing Gandalf after the fight between all Nine and Gandalf. Hence why only 5 attack at Frodo and company at Weathertop. EDIT: spelling correction.

I have to say Weathertop was one of the scenes where I was disappointed with the film adaptation. First, the location in the book is a really big mountain, not just a little hill with some rocks (that's also the one difference you haven't mentioned). Second the build up to the attack is much more elaborate, with the traces of the fight before, and them seeing the Nazgul crawl up the mountain. The company awaited an attack all night and of course Strider stayed with the hobbits. In the film I find it far to quick and easy, Strider leaves rhe hobbits on their own for some reason, the hobbits make a fire, and oh, here they come. I would have loved some anxious scenes of them not knowing when and from where the Nazgul are coming. Oh, and why are the hobbits portrayed as careless fools all the time??

I have felt the same. However, over the years my respect for Tolkien has grown and so my feeling that the master was in error is an error. Three things: firstly the hobbits are much tougher than they appear; secondly they are with Aragorn (one does not simply massacre Aragorn); thirdly they have the charmed blades from the Barrow. Remember that Merry was able to slay the Witch King with his Ancient blade and that Frodo did not simply collapse but fought and struck the Nazgûl with a similar blade.
@user-td9hp6li5h
@user-td9hp6li5h 14 күн бұрын
Not necessarily. At this point in the tale, the Nazgul were not as strong as they later become (when Sauron's power flows more clearly into them). They are a long, long way from Mordor and their master, so they are not anything like they become at Minas Tirith for instance. They are still powerful of course, but most of their "power" comes from the fear they cause in their enemies. If Aragorn was not daunted by the Nazgul, it then becomes a question of whether a Dunedain chieftain (and scion of the house of kings) could fight with five not-fully-empowered Nazgul. I believe he could. As for just stabbing Frodo, I think it needs to be taken into account that the Nazgul probably didn't know who Aragorn was. To them, he's just a man - possibly identiable as a Ranger - travelling with a group of hobbits. If the Morgul blade could do its job, Frodo would have become a weaker version of themselves, and under their control. That would have been enough for them to get him to their side and to reclaim the Ring. That the man travelling with them would take them to Elrond to be healed was probably not in their calculations.
