Update: We've received many comments from readers that LG is no longer fixing this issue. LG has requested that we direct anyone with this issue back to LG's normal support channels, but we don't know for sure if they'll still fix it.

Is there anywhere in writing that LG states they will fix this issue for free? Because I have the same (maybe even more) 25% burn in issue with my 55" E7P 2017 model and LG is denying any responsibility with the problem with their "look up table" and stating that for them to fix my television that it will cost approximately 25% of the televisions cost at the time of purchase. It's ridiculous that they are kind and willing to help companies like you guys but when average customers need the same help they deny any responsibility and try to blame the customer. If there is anyway you guys could please reach out to me or show me anywhere LG explicitly has stated before that they will fix this issue for free, I would greatly appreciate it. Because not only are they denying it's a factory defect but they are denying they ever fixed any TV's for free and that there was ever a problem with their 2017 55" models. Please help! My TV is less than two years old. I honestly will never deal with LG again and the fact your site is still reccomending their TV's when you know this is an issue is a shame on your part as well. With that said.... To all the people in the same situation. Class action lawsuit against LG anyone?

I commented a few weeks ago about having this same issue and thankfully LG Canada has brought it to a positive conclusion. While not being able to complete the repair in the video due to service technicians not being available close enough to where I live (Owen Sound, Ontario) they have instead chosen to swap my TV for a new one. They sent a full credit to The Brick and I receive my new TV this Wednesday. The best part is that I’m actually getting an upgrade free of charge. My TV is a 55” B7 from 2017 and they no longer have those in stock so in exchange I’m getting a 55” C7 from 2018. Thanks again for this content because if not for this video I’d be stuck with a faulty TV. You guys are awesome.

I'm just on to LG now about this as I noticed it yesterday (tv is 1 year and 1 day old as of yesterday). I'm in the UK and not very hopeful of this 'free repair' that the video claims LG will do. I personally believe that if they try charging then these guys should make a follow up video about LG being liars.

Thanks a million for this video and info. I used it to ask for the repair on my LG 55B7V bought in May 2018. It was showing exactly the same 25% window. LG took the TV to the lab and ended up replacing the panel within warranty! Kudos to LG and RTINGS for this! The ironic thing is that the panel now has additional 2year warranty :) Cheers

Great update. I was thinking about the status of the burn-in test just earlier today. I am relieved that (according to LG) the 65inch C7s are not suffering from the look up table issue. At least I couldn't replicate the window on my Screen using a Magenta slide (thankfully). Keep up the good work.

Thank you guys so much for this content. I'm currently having the same 25% issue with my 55" OLED and when I starting researching the problem I found this video. I contacted LG Canada today and at first they tried to tell me I had to pay out of pocket because the warranty expired in January of this year. I directed them to your website, and after spending quite a bit of time on hold they informed me that they will be doing the repair free of charge. I'm just waiting on confirmation of a repair date and I'll comment here again once the repair is done. Thanks again!

If they’re paying for the panel replacement do it. The affected panels were manufactured in 2017 according to this video so a new panel is likely no older than 2018 and should be fine.
@DriftSpaceZero
@DriftSpaceZero 5 жыл бұрын
@@wilftoddneil Right, but is the look-up table stored with parts associated with the panel? I have read some comments on Reddit where people had their panels replaced due to this problem which say: "I'm sure it's just me being paranoid, but I still feel like I can see it sometimes." If the look-up table is not stored with the panel itself: changing the panel won't fix the problem. If this is a problem which doesn't appear immediately, and is related to integers stored in a database separate from the panel: it will just come back. As I understand the problem: it manifests because the panel wasn't completely cool before the 25% test window was displayed, and the look-up table values were written while the panel temperature was not uniform. If replacing my panel repairs the look-up table: I'm all about it, but I'm not convinced that's the solution. If panel replacement was the cure: why didn't LG do it to the displays in this video, and why does Daniel say the panel is not the problem? Thanks for your reply, and I look forward to hearing what happens with your display.

Update - LG just emailed me and for whatever reason they cannot arrange to have anyone come to my home to do the repair. Instead, they are sending a full credit to the store I bought the TV from and I’m supposed to go pick a new TV and they’ll take away my old one. We’ll have to see how this plays out because I want to at least be able to get the same model in return.

We will continue to run this test to gather more data on the burn-in issue. Our current stance is for most people, if you vary what you watch, burn-in shouldn't be an issue. If you watch a lot of the same static content though, there is a risk.

I thought LG wasn't fixing this issue - but they are. My 2017 55" model was displaying terrible burn-in, especially with red backgrounds (see any State Farm commercial). I purchased a new Samsung QLED set but called LG anyway. After a bit of transferring, I was transferred to a helpful tech support person in the Philippines. I had to provide pictures of the burn-in in support of the ticket they opened for me. An authorized service technician replaced the screen today. Cost of labor was about $180.00. I had to run multiple pixel refreshes but the TV now displays a solid background - even with solid red pictures. I'm greatly relieved that LG was willing to work with me to get my 2017 model repaired!

Thanks to Rtings maybe LG OLEDs panels manufactured in 2018 will improve their uniformity with better QA/QC. I wish in 2019 they could develop a banding-free OLED with better performance in terms of burn in. Maybe the implementation TADF subpixel technology will be the key. Thank you again guys. I'm quite enjoying the approach that Rtings are taking. Image retention and image burn are dependent on so many variables. At least their methodology is trying to quantify and qualify any issues that exist with OLEDs. And as the old saying goes - knowledge is power. Knowing what causes problems means you can avoid or at least decide whether such a big purchase is right for you.

Definately an important and interesting test. Im glad to report that my 2017 OLED 65 inch C7 TV has no retention or burn in that I can see. There is sometimes a temporary retention for a few seconds when first starting up the tv, if I leave a menu on, but nothing that lasts. Since ive had the tv in august Ive only used it for gaming, watching only a few movies. Heavy gaming on OLD systems played through emulators. As well as new games. A full variety of games. Many hours on Persona 5 as soon as I got the tv which has many static bars. No retention. Though I think there is some truth to getting a good panel. I know with the few plasmas I owned, I only had one set that handled retention great and I didnt have to worry about it with gaming. The others always had shadows of life bars that sometimes never seemed to fade. After all the negative I heard about retention on OLEDs I was surprised that it performed way better than my previous plasmas and was not even an issue. Basically everything I play is posted on the channel after editing, so the variety and frequency can be seen to some degree there.

I am experiencing burn in on a 2018 e8 65in lg. The image overlay of a game played on the tv has burned into the center of the screen. It stands out most during my children’s cartoons with bright primary colors. Calling LG tomorrow.

WOW! I had just contacted LG after noticing the same issue. A service rep came out and took the TV, they have advised me yesterday it’s with engineers. RTINGS can you advise how your followers can utilise your findings and help us use this as evidence to make the process with LG smoother. Eg do you guys have REF number or a quality program number LG. Provided for you? Thank you! I have been following your testing and it’s so valuable not only to catch out these defects. But to improve quality

I have an lg cx oled 55”. Had it for over a month and what i am about to mention has happen twice now. I turn on tv it goes throught it’s normal start up but, the screen goes from full black to full red for about 1sec. Then when the image appears it is all messed up. There not a single pixel displaying the correct color but you can still make out what is being showed. Not sure how else to describe what it look likes or how to repeat it. The tv has very low hours on it. Just for gaming. Thoughts anyone!

Hi Daniel, I have the same issue, I bought LG OLED 2017 television. 1.5 years passed a burn occured on the screen. Technical service came and change the panel for free. Unfortunately after 4 months second panel had the same burn issue too. For second time I called for technical service. The service said it is the same burn issue but they cannot change for free as 2 years guarantee passed. I want to know that, how and where can I find the explanation of the LG about the burning issue in 2017 LG OLED burn issue, even 5 years passes they can change it ? What can I do to solve this problem? Thank you.

Is it possible that the dimmer CNN tv has more uniformity issues due to the exponential decay rate of the organic leds? Like since it's using a lower setting, the static pixels still decayed rather quickly, but the non static pixels around it just weren't "catching up" as quickly since they weren't outputting anywhere near their peak brightness. In other words, I'd assume that if the tv was on max brightness, the static pixels would still decay faster at first, but all of the pixels would more quickly reach a point where the decay becomes less percievable and they sort of start to even out. I might be wrong though. Hopefully I worded that in a way that makes sense. I would like to know what you guys think.

I'm going through this 25% issue myself. I must say SO FAR, LG in the UK have been very good! They just asked for some pictures and proof of purchase now I'm just waiting on a date for the engineers to visit and repair. I was expecting to have to argue till blue in the face! I hope every thing else goes as smoothly .

What was the end-result of your repair? Did they replace your panel, or did they update the look-up table as they did here in the video? I'm in the US, and I am definitely approaching "blue-in-the-face" territory; tech insists that this is -- and needs to be treated like -- burn-in, even after I showed him this video.

@@DriftSpaceZero They have just done the repair today, would have been a week after my fist post, but had to change the date due to work. They replaced the panel, took the guy about an hour to swap It out. All in all, I am quite happy my TV was just out of warranty and LG didn't mention It, everyone Ive spoken to at LG have been helpful and very quick to respond. I hope you have got yours fixed.

That used to help with my plasma years ago. I left the static on for a little while before turning it off. It shifts the pixel change extremely fast. Wiping off any retention. I'm sure it would have a benefit on OLED too. Problem is channels are digital now. So hard to find that white noise static.

I had the exact same problem with my LGOLED55E7P, and this video was incredibly useful in articulating the problem to LG customer service. My issue came up just after owning the unit for a year, right after the pixel refresher automatically ran for the first time. Naturally, this was just days after my warranty expired. I spent several weeks following up with various people at LG customer service, and eventually they put me through to an OLED specialist, who sent out an official LG tech that confirmed the problem, came back with a replacement panel a few days later, and replaced it in my home within an hour. To anyone who has had problems getting help from LG with this issue, even if your unit is out of warranty, just keep at it and emphasize that it's a manufacturing defect, and you should eventually be put in touch with an OLED specialist who knows what you're talking about. Good luck!

Since LG uses WOLED (which essentially makes it a FALD display with 8 million dimming zones), why is it that colors like red and yellow cause image retention faster than other colors? This especially makes me wonder what is going on since red is a lower energy wavelength, yet people say that it causes quicker/more intense burn in than blue on these tvs. I thought that different colors would only change the rate of screen degradation if the red, blue, and green sub pixels were individually lit, but since LG puts filters ontop of a white oled, this confuses me a little bit. Does the red filter just require more white light to pass through in order to achieve the same percieved brightness as a blue filter?

Thanks for this video, its good to know that its a common issue. Can you please confirm if LG will repair any brand TVs, or only their own? I have this 25% window issue with my Panasonic 55 inch TV. I believe LG are the manufacturers of all OLED panels, so I assume they will agree to repair the panasonic? How does one go about asking them to do so?
@DriftSpaceZero
@DriftSpaceZero 5 жыл бұрын
This is actually great information -- that your Panasonic TV with an LG-manufactured panel -- has this issue; it makes me think that the look-up table is associated with the panel itself, and not the computer which controls the TV. You'll probably have to go through Panasonic (their replacement parts will come from LG), but you should definitely mention this video. Good luck!

Is there any way to reset/update the look up table by myself? I had to replace the faulty panel controller board on my OLED65G6V (on this model the panel controller and the main boards are separate pcbs). The TV is working now, but I see now an old conpensation table from the tv that the board has been taken from (clear panel noise doesnt help). The LG service in the UK is hopeless. They say that they can only rellace my while panel with the controller board for more that I paid for the TV. I'm stuck with a terrible vwrtical banding that wasn't there before the controller board malfunctioned. Can you help?

The American Soccer Guy It seems to me, that not even them know why the darker panel is more subject to burn in ,and the more brighter is not??? And this would help a multitude of people who are keeping the Oled lights down to prevent the fucking burn in, and that obviously is not helping but damages even more panel itself!!!

Mario Borojevic Yeah, this has me a bit concerned, to say the least. I try to keep my OLED low, and have been using the full zoom aspect ratio to move static images off screen. LG really needs to have some warranty coverage for this. So confusing. Do I run it bright,? Will burn in be from abuse or a manufacturer defect? Should I make HUD display in games dimmer or brighter? Damn it, LG.

How does an owner check to see if their LG OLED is experiencing this problem? Specifically, who do we call at LG to discuss this problem? Please publish a video answering these questions. Thanks.

I just had my 2017 C7 55” Panel replaced by LG due the square in the middle. They didn’t update any settings or firmware however. Is the issue likely to occur again as it’s not a panel problem? This was just before this video was released and I assume they weren’t exactly sure about the root cause of the issue and done the panel thinking it was the panel. Mine was very noticeable and occurred very noticeably in normal content.

Hi , i also have a some sort of suggestion and question for the test of these OLEDS that you guys are still running. Since I also bought B7 OLED and i was already well aware of the burn in and image retention issues if you left static image or even those black bars at the bottom and up side of the screen for consistent period of time. So due to this fact I never ever play a content with static logo on it , i only use my B7 for movies with 16:9 aspect ratio , where it fills the screen to get rid of those black bars , if they are there . The point is that the OLEDS pixels have to be shifting and changing constantly to prevent any burn in . I personally have never experienced any burn in or image retention on both my phone and B7 . But what about COLOR DEGRADATION issue in OLEDS ???? . Since they use organic compounds in these displays they will degrade over time . So do you have any suggestions regarding this color degradation issue for a man like me who uses OLEDS without any static image on screen ? Thank You . My kindest regards with respect.
