Did you know that Michael Learned was a struggling single mother at the time that she was cast on The Waltons, and that she didn’t think that the show was even going to make it to air? When The Waltons appeared on television in 1972, the cast of the show didn’t think that it was going to make it past one season. In fact, it seems that there were some people working on the series that didn’t even believe it was going to make it to air! This apparently included Michael Learned, who played matriarch Olivia Walton on the series. According to Olivia, she had been led to believe that the production of the show was some kind of tax write-off.

The Waltons ended up being a runaway hit and lasted for nine seasons. However, only seven of those seasons ended up including Michael, as she left the series before it ended. The actress still regrets the decision. According to Michael Learned, the reason that she took her role on The Waltons was because of the money. At the time that she was offered the role of Olivia Walton, she was a struggling single mother.
The money that Michael Learned was making from The Waltons made a huge difference for her and her sons. However, she didn’t think that it was going to be a steady gig. Michael claims that she was unsure if The Waltons was even going to make it to air. Though she was disappointed by the prospect of losing out on her new steady paycheck, she was also glad that she likely wasn’t going to have to keep performing on television anymore.
Prior to working on The Waltons, Michael Learned was making a name for herself on the stage. Michael hated the rigorous demands that came as a result of television’s tight shooting schedules. For that matter, she also hated playing the character of Olivia Walton, whom she believed was too saccharine. Because of this, it was a bittersweet victory when The Waltons became a success and ended up lasting for nine seasons. After seven seasons, Michael Learned gave up her role on the program. However, she sometimes wishes that she hadn’t. Join Facts Verse as we explore how Michael Learned still regrets leaving The Waltons to this day.

It was tough to lose Grandma and Grandpa and John Boy. But those departures felt organic. Children leave home; grandparents get sick and pass away. But they could never quite explain why Olivia Walton wasn’t around anymore - and those various explanations (Olivia has tuberculosis! Olivia is in Washington working for the Red Cross! Olivia has had a relapse of TB and has to move to Arizona!) always felt very contrived. The show was never the same without Michael Learned.

Absolutely loved the Waltons! I still watch it almost daily where I live! I did miss John boy, Olivia and of course Grandma and Grandpa Walton as one passed away and the other had a stroke but love that it portrayed real life, real loves, real story lives during the depression. Love that they all still get together and love one another to this day!!

I think Michael was foolish to leave the Walton's. Yes, 14 hours a day is tough, but the payoff in her situation would have been more than worth it. What a way to live to regret and in an historical series no less. No, I wouldn't have done that. It was her appointed time in the "sun".

Sad to say, They self destructed the show ! I was totally dedicated to show ! The entire cast ! A few more than others ! My massive crush on Judy Norton, and Micheal Learned was something else more than the storyline which I absolutely loved the writing ! It continued to keep me coming back week after week ! Then Ellen Corby had a sever stroke ! Yett, she, like the trooper actress that she was, continued to act in her diminished capacity how impressive was that !!! Darn shame they thought they could replace Richard Thomas! And not enough effort was made to retain Michael learned in her matriarchal role !

I've watched a few Waltons episodes over the years but was never committed to the series. About 8 months ago I started the series from the beginning with the pilot movie The Homecoming. I’m almost through the final season 9 and will finish off with all the movies. After that, I’ll have had my lifetime fill of the Waltons! In my opinion, the series survived without Michael Learned and the recast of John Boy & Curtis. I think viewers were kind of over it with the series by then anyway, and ratings did fall. I will say though, I think it was poor career moves for Michael and Richard not to see the series through to the end. Ralph Waite carried the series, as did the rest of the Walton clan after Ralph was let go.

It's funny when they want to quit and do some other role, but it's like they just dropped off the face of the earth. Actors want that one great role that will make them famous and will be remembered for years to come, then when they find that one they quit!? I can't name one thing she did after the Waltons or one thing she did before the the Waltons, the same thing with Richard, but I can name one move he was on, IT that was the stupid show ever! Should have stayed with the show that is one of the best shows even to this day. I also think when someone wants to leave they would kind of make you not like them, like when the mother was working in the hospital so she could stay with John Boy, then John Boy came home but his mother didn't because all of a sudden stranger were more important than taking care of her own son? That was not her character she would have never done that. I mean, her own son had a brain injury, and she wouldn't go home with him to take care of him, yeah, right. It kind of made you not like her character anymore. The same thing with John Boy, his character changed so much I couldn't stand the way he would act so hyper and loud, and just ridiculous. I think they do that on purpose, so you won't care if they are there or not. I understand it was a lot of work, but if two old people and children could do it, i would think Michael could do it, but she did have 3 children to take care of, and working 14 hours a day didn't leave much time for them. I'm not judging them because I'm sure it was hard, I just hated that they left the show because the mother was a very important part in the show. It was never the same.

There is such a strong resemblance to Doris Roberts and Michael Learned... I can actually see that connection as I look at Michael today. Even their roles of a " mother figure " is similar. Although Michael was a natural beauty from day 1 on The Waltons, there is just something about these 2 that connects in my thoughts. Michael is still beautiful to this day..
