Labor is a MARATHON not a sprint.
I receive so many DMs, comments, and stories about how mamas are being told they need a #csection because they're not 'progressing as quickly as they should'. This statement is usually bs.
Failure to progress is an overused diagnosis to justify a c-section and frankly, it's disgusting. According to an article published in American Family Physician in 2021, “abnormally slow or protracted labor accounts for 25% to 55% of all Cesarean deliveries” (Lefevre et al. 2021).
Before I get all of the comments about how I’m wrong, hear me out. I’m not claiming that this will be everyone’s experience; however, for many women it is and it is unfair to put a narrative out there that birth must be painful and miserable and can’t be enjoyable and manageable.
In this video, I am going to share with you how to avoid an unnecessary c-section by knowing how to allow your body to progress how it needs to without being rushed.
If you want to learn more about your options and rights in labor, check out my Werk Your Birth program linked below in the description. I walk families through how to advocate for their rights and options while using tools to make the labor process more manageable and enjoyable.

I’m all the way from Senegal 🇸🇳 and had a C-Section cause of Failure of Progress. And u definitely right bcause it was during Ramadan and I think that they were all ready to go take Iftar at home so they made me do a C-Section… which I didn’t want of course cuz I was sure that I was able to go thru labor and deliver safely… I was so ready for that moment 💔 Thanks for this video !!!

Between this video and the pitocin video you've made you have shared a TON of information that would have been really helpful to know about our first time around at the hospital. I'm tempted to name and shame the hospital but it seems like it's a universal problem rather than it being specific to our hospital. Now I really know that we can't make any assumptions about doctors or nurses really being advocates for our health rather than getting on with their day.

THANK YOU. First time mom at 20 weeks and just starting my birth plan and learning so much from your channel. I really want to avoid a c-section unless ABSOLUTELY necessary and your video has been very informative. I will be showing my partner, taking notes and ensuring that I am advocated for.

I was in labor for 27 hours, not progressing past 3 cm. So, I ended up having a c section for my first baby due to failure to progress. I'm currently pregnant with my second, and I'm hoping for a successful vbac. My contractions were very abnormal from what i was told. Before a contraction would end, another would start. It was very painful for me for the first half of my labor so i was glued to the bed in excruciating pain. Then i got an epidural for about the last 10 hours, so i was forced to stay in bed without a choice, and i still wouldnt progress even though my water finally broke.

I was planning on a home birth. I ended up needing to be induced at 43 weeks (conceived via IVF so yes I was 43 weeks). I am probably the perfect definition of an actual failure to progress. I reached 6cm after about 10 hours of labor and then stalled for over 24 hours with my water broken. The longer I labored, the more swollen (not thinned) my cervix became. My midwife was there to confirm everything that was being said, and we didn't want the situation to become an emergency, so I ended up agreeing to the ob's recommendation for a c-section. I want to try for a home birth again, and I don't want to have another c section, but I am concerned that the same thing will happen again as I will need to do ivf to conceive. There's a link between the amount of progesterone taken during pregnancy creating stubborn cervixes in labor. I wish there was more information on how to actually work through a failure to progress situation instead of the redundant "your ob is probably lying to you" I'm finding. Is real failure to progress avoidable? Should I just schedule a c-section and avoid the trauma I experienced last time? I don't want to be separated from my toddler during the birth of my next child, and I want to avoid the absolutely awful recovery process that is c-section recovery. 😓

I am so sorry for your traumatic birth! It is so hard to say for sure what exactly could have changed the situation. Did you feel like you were trying to help baby engage into your pelvis more or do movements to help with progressing labor or were you on your back or were you doing absolutely everything there was and it just ended up that there was no other way. I have no idea! I wish so badly it would have ended differently for you, and your next likely won't HAVE to be a c-section, but if you make that choice to schedule a c, then make the best of it! You're body did not fail you and you are still a wonderful mother! Praying you find some peace and comfort in motherhood and release the trauma from your life! Feel free to schedule a free consultation with me if you want to have my support during your next pregnancy! tr.ee/5XsyYfnXQW

@sabrinawright3544 last time, around 4 years ago, my labour stalled for 2.5 hours. After 7 cm, it stopped to dilate. Doctors already decided if labour doesn't progress within one hour I'll have to choose c section, because my water broke almost 12 hours ago. Then an experienced midwife told me to have little bit of pitocin via iv, that may help. I agreed, and baby was delivered normally few minutes later. There must me an underlying reason why the labour stalled at the first place. I had 3 reasons so far, which I've learnt recently. I was hungry, last meal was around half 9pm and I didn't have anything at all untill that time around 7am in the morning, though my water broke around 11 pm and contraction began straight away, I was awake whole night. May be my body needed to store energy, that's why it stopped labouring. 2. That was a very hot day in England, I was sweating like anything and probably I was little bit dehydrated. 3. When I was sweating so much, baby's heartbeat dropped a little bit so the midwives pressed the emergency button and there came a bunch of specialist doctors team to see what was going on, and there was a male dr as well. Obviously I was half naked from thigh, though the male doctor didn't even look at me, I was staring at him the whole time he was reading my notes and files, that made me feel embarrassed and may be that also affected my labour! This great lady, Chanel also has a video regarding labour stall. Watch that out. There must be a reason why our bodies stop labouring! You know in Quran, there is whole chapter in the name of Mary, chapter number 19, Mary the Virgin mother of Jesus PBUH. There God described how Maryam/ Miriam/ Mary was instructed to eat dates and drink from the spring underneath. God is describing this incident, there is a lesson for us! It is another indirect way of telling to eat and drink a little by little during labour so that labour can progress well. Hope that answers your question... This time, I am 27 weeks pregnant, and I hope and I pray everything goes smoothly this time, as my knowledge has increased than before!

So what is the best position to stay in when a contraction is about to come? , to help you stay relaxed, open up the pelvis and help with progression of dilation? Is it standing ? Or laying down? Or sitting?
@awerkingmama

I have some videos on this - check out stations over dilation. Movement is best.

I had the SAME first birthing experience as you, but at 4cm they told me that my baby’s heartbeat is distress which made me panic and agree to the c section. Not sure if I made a right decision because of that. Also, pitocin sucks!

I had a c-section due to my baby being born sunny side up, i ended up dialating to 10. But i wished my doctor would of done an Ultrasound to see the position of my baby sooner.

I hope that your birth was still beautiful. I’ve had a lot of mamas birth vaginally with baby sunny side up. Was this the explanation for your c-section?
