🌲 Silverton's Forgotten Wilderness: Timber-Cutting Hundereds of Hemlock and Douglas Fir 🌲
James and I set out on another day of the Thuline Timber Co logging operation in the ghost town of Silverton, Washington. Once a hub for countless mines in the North Cascades during the 1890’s-1940’s this abandoned mining town is nestled in the North Cascade Mountains on the Stillaguamish river. Today, we explore where Hemlock and Douglas fir trees grew tall, competing for sunlight. The land we're on is surrounded by massive mountains, creating a natural bowl-like setting where the trees leftover from when the town was abandoned were left unmanaged to grow tall.
The town's history is fascinating, now a relic of Washington’s rich mining and logging history. Only a few people remain in the town today.
Amidst this temperate atmosphere, a dense stand of trees have grown close together. Due hemlock’s proximity to each other, they competed for survival, causing a massive windfall that threatened the remaining houses in the area.
James shares his knowledge of timber-cutting techniques. He demonstrates how to safely fell trees and handle timber that has fallen atop one another, considering the challenging terrain with shallow soil before reaching hard rock. James cut over 300 trees in just a matter of days. Drop a comment in the comment section!

Silverton! I was wondering where all those Hemlock sticks were coming from. Good Motosierra work, but complacency can ruin a good day in a hurry! Kick some more ass!

Awesome video, I enjoy watching these on the weekend after cutting all week. I'm a second generation logger here in the Sacramento district in New Mexico. We just started a new thinning / timber sale, keep it up brother, not many of us left out there.

Very nice video, thanks for posting. I was surprised to see an excavator assisting on the old style felling and then moving logs around. These days mostly see a feller buncher or a harvester on the cut block.

So after all this tree work gets done does someone come through and clean up all the mess from the limbs, stumps etc or is it just left to rot? Always wondered that when seeing all this tree clearing being done on mountains for lumber.
@thulinetimberco
@thulinetimberco 11 ай бұрын
Great question! We didn't get it on film but the excavator is able to pull brush and clean the area up 90%, and the other 10% is hand cleaned. Then the stumps were removed. Typically logging operations leave "slash" piles i.e. stacked debris that is left behind.

Love it. Switch between the 500 and the 660 regularly. Both hopped up. The 500 revs higher where the 660 has more torque. All around solid saw, hard to find at the moment because everybody wants one!
