🌲 Silverton's Forgotten Wilderness: Timber-Cutting Hundereds of Hemlock and Douglas Fir 🌲
James and I set out on another day of the Thuline Timber Co logging operation in the ghost town of Silverton, Washington. Once a hub for countless mines in the North Cascades during the 1890’s-1940’s this abandoned mining town is nestled in the North Cascade Mountains on the Stillaguamish river. Today, we explore where Hemlock and Douglas fir trees grew tall, competing for sunlight. The land we're on is surrounded by massive mountains, creating a natural bowl-like setting where the trees leftover from when the town was abandoned were left unmanaged to grow tall.
The town's history is fascinating, now a relic of Washington’s rich mining and logging history. Only a few people remain in the town today.
Amidst this temperate atmosphere, a dense stand of trees have grown close together. Due hemlock’s proximity to each other, they competed for survival, causing a massive windfall that threatened the remaining houses in the area.
James shares his knowledge of timber-cutting techniques. He demonstrates how to safely fell trees and handle timber that has fallen atop one another, considering the challenging terrain with shallow soil before reaching hard rock. James cut over 300 trees in just a matter of days. Drop a comment in the comment section!
