What do y'all think about ForeFlight track being overlaid for hold and approaches? Welcome your feedback and input below!
Fun flight for me to keep sharp between family trips. Will enter a hold and fly it with wind correction then an ILS approach going missed and an RNAV approach back home. Heavy workload in busy airspace so keeps your radio and pilot skills sharp with no sitting around!
Let me know your feedback, always looking to improve as a pilot and improve these videos. I started calling out some of the things on the screen and show a little hold entry diagram (refining my video skills).

This is one of my go to routes from training. Quick short and busy. Let me know if the ForeFlight overlay is helpful or annoying. Thanks for watching!

Overlay was more helpful than annoying. The recording of the track was good to show the hold. Good practice and review potential.

You're welcome Devin! I could watch the entire flight from that tail-mounted camera!! It would be a neat perspective with your commentary from the cockpit! But then I'd miss the focus of you and all your fantastic "piloty" input and actions. Have a great week! Looking forward to your next video.

Just as you were at the MAP another pilot ended his call to the tower with QSL but caught himself. QSL is Ham radio operator shorthand for acknowledged :o) Considering the bounce house air that landing was outstanding. Great video. Much appreciated. The Foreflight overlay is awesome. I record my tracks all the time. All of that traffic was a bit unnerving but the controllers all rocked it.

That’s a cool catch Michael! We’re used to that traffic being under a bravo in a busy area but the controllers do rock! Thanks for watching and cool about the FF track I’ll keep it coming. Thanks again!

Super impressed with the Awesome training flight.....will probably watch multiple times. If someone hasn’t already said so you would make an excellent instructor. I’m finishing up my instrument and do a lot of flying in and out of the DFW Class B. It’s possible to reach a level of proficiency quickly flying to and from familiar airports even in this busy airspace where situational awareness of the area along with expected procedures and frequencies are more or less committed to memory .....particularly with a good autopilot engaged. I wonder how many current IFR pilots could handle the combination of hard IMC, single pilot, moderate turbulence and a small emergency thrown in for good measure. Your method of talking/teaching during your practice flights reinforces really great habits particularly hand flying.The single most valuable technique I noticed is a constant “what’s now what’s next” theme......I love it. On heading, on altitude, on glide slope.....slight correction..... constant reference to the desired tract vs tract for wind correction.....squeezing checklists in......all the time with a simple and calm focus. Great job

Ahh thanks Blake! I’ve had some awesome instructors and my mission is flying our family around... so I’m always trying to get better and ready for those IMC days. I was really disappointed in myself a couple videos ago so I’ve upped the solo practice. Scary for me is not flying every week and then jumping into IMC. Us GA guys face that risk since we’re not up there everyday so this is helpful for me to get a heavy workload and practice. Thanks so much for your comment and complement. Means a lot!

Nice job You are correct about switching fuel at altitude it has been the cause of some accidents one of my friends bought an Arrow a couple of years ago his is a 1968 180 with the short wings you have to be aware of that sink rate I flew a buddies a few years ago but own a 1968 Skylane that I had bought in 1986

Well flown approaches, and nicely done video! I think the ForeFlight overlay is super useful. Minor personal preference: in ForeFlight, More, Settings, Hide Distant Traffic... which then shows traffic only +/-3500' and within 15nm... and thereby removes a LOT of clutter. There is one time when I turn off Hide Distant Traffic, and that's when I'm flying very remote (e.g. in Mexico or on long overwater legs) where I might want to know of nearby airliners that I could contact for emergencies or radio relays to ATC.

That is a great tip on FF! I get frustrated when I’m looking to just double check alt or DME on a plate but there is an airliner target over the number I need - done on all my devices. Thank you! Always learning.

Well done on the hold and approach. ATC worked well with you, nice to see. Just one question, Going missed at Conroe, why did you leave gear down so long during the climb? Beautiful greaser landing at Hooks. Love how you keep sharp with practice. Thanks for sharing.
@FamilyPilot

Thanks JT! For the gear it was a miss I’ll leave them down until no usable runway but I didn’t get to my cruise check list until checking on with approach and loading the gps approach which is where I caught it - why we do checklists but it bothered me I missed it. Why we practice I guess!

Great job Devin! Hold and approach were great. I think the ForeFlight overlay is awesome. Do you have a cellular plan on your iPad to get the traffic data overlaid on ForeFlight, or is that from a Stratus or something similar? The flight was definitely busy and a flight like this is awesome to keep proficient as single pilot IFR. Great job. Are you noticing traffic is slowing down with this whole COVID-19 thing, or was this prior?
@FamilyPilot
@FamilyPilot 4 жыл бұрын
This was prior to Covid - I edited this in adobe premier so took me a looonnnggg time to learn that. I’m using the FF Sentry which is a CO2 detector, weather, gps and “backup AHRS” for the worst cas scenario. There is a cellular gps in iPad but the CO2 and traffic/weather is only from the sentry! Happy skies

Great video, lots of explanation, very busy throughout, but when i watch the video, i need to ask that it shows your wing walk on the arrow is seen on the left side, or pilots side, why is that, or is it just me, lol.

Mike good eye! The mount for my GoPro had the camera upside down on the tail. I inverted the picture and you’re seeing a reflection. My step and walk are on the passenger side :) thanks for watching!
