i've just started watching the video but so far i can say i wholeheartedly agree with the title. it just makes me think of that time when the paps were trying to take a photo of niall and they were telling all these fangirls to get out the way and niall was like "wdym girls get out the way? they pay my bills, not you." slay

Hmmmm I don't think that's true really, back then there were a lot of music acts (especially in genres like Rnb/Soul/Disco/House/Rock/Funk/Reggaeton/dancehall and Rap etc) that were massively successful (more successful than acts today) without being dependent on fangirls or fangirl culture. Fangirls really became essential in the social media/streaming age. While I appreciate Jasmine higlighting the positive contributions of fan girls in the music industry. I also wish she could highlight (and go into more depth) the more negative and toxic aspects of fan girl culture a especially in the social media age in regards to issues like idol worship, chart obsession and hostility towards other artists (like calling every other artist flops etc). Morever the fact that success in the music industry has become so dependent on internet activity (especially social media) also brings to light another negative aspect of fangirl culture these days (so gen z fangirls). The dominant users of music related internet activity (or stan culture if you want) are white or whitewashed teen girls, and young kpop stans. The latter is a demographic that can AFFORD to spend a lot of time on the internet and be so invested (like the amount of money that some kpop stans spend to make sure that their "faves" chart high is just...WOW) on their faves. They don't just listen to their faves' song, but they go out of their way to make sure that they chart high. Whereas other and older demogaphics tend to have more things going on in their life and can't be as invested and are therefore less present. The type of artists that the former demographic favors THESE DAYS is often limited to white (or white passing) pop/alternative pop (indie pop,pop rock, ) acts or more specifically performers like Taylor,Justin,Olivia,Shawn,Harry,Billie,Doja, and kpop groups (which is dominated by Koreans or Asians who fit the korean aesthetic) as well as some Latin male artists. Consequently any NEW acts that don't fit those characteristics will have a harder time attaining consistent success even if they're music is objectively better, and they are more talented performers. For instance I think it's sad that black rnb and soul performers have almost vanished from mainstream music. Beyonce is literally the only one of those type of artists that can chart high, but she doesn't really do rnb music/soul anymore, and she comes from a different generation. It is extremely hard for new artists of those genres to have or maintain commercial success these days. Soul/rnb/urban music tends to chart high when Adele,Ariana,Justin or white passing artists like (The weeknd,Doja) releases. For instance Jazmine made a video on the group FLO and given what I said earlier, I highly doubt that Flo can be as successful as they deserve to be. This goes to show that colorism and white privilege is a real thing. And I think that current Stan culture unintentionally furthers that. Even when it comes to Asian acts. Successful Asian acts only consists of kpop groups. You'll never see SoutheastAsians (even if Lisa is Thai, she's made to look like a North asian). Given the aforementioned power and control that gen z fangirls have, I think the music industry has become less diverse musically and has declined in quality. You see that in the constant complaints about the quality of live performances. You have the Justin,Taylor,Harry,Olivia,Billie,Ed,Shawn etc squad that have good poo songs, but are just okay vocalists and performers. And then there's Kpop groups who are great dancers, but in terms of overall performance, there's still something missing and they lack the artistic depth and unique qualities that the aforementioned American Artists have. None of these acts give performances at the level of Michael Jackson,Beyonce,Gaga,Pink, and even rihanna (Who is not the best singer nor dancer but she still gave great and immersive performamces) or singers like Whitney,Celine and Mariah. I'm speaking generally of course, so there might be exceptions. Finally, back then most of the the top charting performers had more diverse fanbases (in age and race) but now a lot of the top charting acts have fanbase that strongly consists of one demographic (especially teems). I just feel like the dominance of fangirls in music has led to a decline in performance ability and a lack of musical diversity in mainstream music.

@@angelaortega1495 I know you wrote this a year ago but I wanted to add onto what you said. I think another element that has led to the decrease in musical diversity is the artists' ability to create parasocial relationships with their fans, something teen girls are especially susceptive to. There have been so many instances of Kpop stans for example, streaming music for hours on end, and trying to artificially inflate numbers to chart their favourite artist. I don't think they would be doing that if they also didn't feel a personal connection to the artist. I was in a fanclub insta once. Was just hoping to make some friends. And I left immediately when they started taking donations from members to PAY youtube to advertise an artist's music videos. Since when do fans pay for advertising? Something that should be coming out of the artist's and label's pockets? And what's even more disturbing is that artist's act in ways to encourage or reward fans for this kind of behaviour.

"If someone walks into your room they can tell your a fangirl" Not me instantly looking at the K-Pop posters on my wall (Twice, Stray Kids, and Nayeon's solo mainly) amongst various other non-music things I'm a fangirl of. Add onto that the mini Ikea shelf in the corner full of physical albums despite not owning a CD player, tour merch, and membership kits with shipping that costs more than the actual product cause it's coming from Korea. Like god getting into K-Pop has been one of the best things to happen to me but it's definitely not a cheap interest lol. Also as a teenage girl I'm so happy you brought up how much we, and young women in general, get made fun of for liking literally anything. Like if you like mainstream things you're "basic", if you're into things that are lesser known you're "weird" or "trying too hard". I just wish people could just have their interests and hobbies and simply enjoy them without being judged (as long as they aren't hurting anyone of course)

The sad thing is grown man lose their marbles the same way over sports and no one judges them. In fact the stereotypical ‘popular guy’ is a sports jock. If you like sports your so respected, your a serious athlete, your healthy, your dedicated, etc. If your a fan girl your ‘cringy’ and ‘obsessed’ The only difference between the word dedicated and obsessed in these situations is literal opinion

It's interesting to me how much of a popular music (usually pop) phenomenon this is. In hardcore we got the identity of hardcore kid/punk, but it's usually oriented towards the genre, going to local shows, collecting vinyls, making DIY zines, etc. rather than devotion to a particular artist.

Thank you so much for this video, I myself have ranted about this topic multiple times. People DO NOT and will not ever understand just how crucial being a fangirl was to my life. I'm 22 and I am a polyglot, can draw hyperrealistic art, can play two instruments, sing, make video edits and graphic edits in general. People will often be impressed by my abilities or ask me how I learned so much, without having any idea I literally owe it all to One Direction. I taught myself a second language at the age of 12 for these mfs AND English ended up becoming my major in college years later and now I'm an English teacher. I ended up developing an appreciation for foreign languages and started learning multiple others. One Direction literally influenced some of my major life choices like college education and career. I always enjoyed drawing as a child but my sole motivator to keep pushing and learning how to draw realistic portraits was the dream of showing them to Zayn and the other boys one day. I learned to play the guitar because I was inspired by Niall teaching himself at around my age and knew I could do it too. I enjoyed the process and went on to learn a second instrument and even sing at events. I have plans of moving abroad to Europe in the next few years, because as a young teenager seeing Niall's love for travelling made me realise that's something I love too and a lifestyle I wish to pursue. Even my music taste was incredibly influenced by all of the boys but most specifically Niall. I started being a fan at 12 and I feel like the boys literally influenced and impacted my entire life to the point I have no idea the person I would be if I hadn't become a fangirl. This is why I never ever let anyone make me feel bad for being passionate about 1D. I've always been proud to be a fangirl cause I knew I was learning so much from it, making so many friends and having such a great time every day. I wish I could tell them how they changed everything about my life for better, but there's just so much to say I could never convey the entirety of it. This is why I'm never "growing out" of it. I'm thankful I was in this fandom!

fantastic video, more people need to watch this tbh! as someone who's both a "fangirl" of multiple artists AND a football fan - the difference how it gets treated is huge and honestly disgusting. you get made fun of if you go to concerts and scream and fangirl, know all the words and wear merch. while football fans (often male) basically do the same thing, going to games, wearing jerseys, chant, scream and also cry. yet no one bats an eye. truly frustrating...

I haven’t really been a proper fangirl since 1D, but nowadays I still see hints of one in me. I literally become OBSESSED in cycles with one or two things at a time while I forget anything else, then I become obsessed with something else for a while and the cycle goes on (the things will sometimes come back to my interest again). In 2018-2020 it was K-pop, in 2021 it was Måneskin, 2021-2022 it was Attack on Titan (new seasons), in May it was Harry and Sigrid (new albums), in summer it was Stranger things and Kate Bush and since August I’ve had a Gorillaz renessaince. Now I’m trying to collect all of their albums on vinyl. I sometimes question myself a lot about why I just can’t balance everything but I don’t really know the answer to why I’m like this! All I know is that once something becomes relevant again like new music or seasons or even new things that become popular or interesting to me I can start obsess over it so quickly.

I used to think being a fangirl was a phase because I was told so, yet I have noticed my favorite band is part of my identity now - this simply will never stop being important to me. I am almost 30 years old now and the feelings are still there. I enjoyed the documentary "I used to be normal" here on KZfaq. It is about fangirls and how being a fan in your teen years actually shapes your identity. An older woman said in this documentary "I am the Beatles, the Beatles is me" - I really feel the same, my favorite band will simply never fade from my life, it is part of me now. :) Also it has changed my life. The section about work and life skills immediately made me think of the Group Order Managers (GOMs) in Kpop fandoms. They are invaluable for international fans who want to collect albums, photocards, and other types of merch of their favorite artists. If you ever follow a GOM’s twitter account or KZfaq channel, you quickly see just how much work goes into managing just a single group order and some of these people have 5-10 group orders going on at any given time!! All of those skills are definitely worthy of going on a resume.

Thank you for this video, I do agree with the overall conclusion of it. However, I would also have liked to see the dark side of fangirls discussed in here. The death treaths to the artist who wins the award instead of their fav, the entitlement they feel to the artist time and life (that can lead to stalking and other related innapropiate behaviours), the often parasocial relationship that is developed, the danger of equating your self-worth to the artist you stan, the group-think that stan twt falls often into where lack of accountability festers and 'mean girls' thrive on... there are plenty of reasons to be wary of developing a fangirl mentality and plenty of reasons to dislike fangirls that aren't rooted in misogyny I believe. (I myself have a kpop stan account so this are observations from the inside. Also, I use they when referring to fangirls cause I am not on that level on involvement I don't think and not necessarily because I don't want to be associated with them)

i so agree. everybody calls themselves “stans” and i’m not sure if they understand the meaning behind that word. it’s not supposed to be a good thing. ofc now it’s become a part of our slang but i find it odd considering the song it originated from is literally about a psychotic stalker/fan. i think the song sheds light on the dark side of fandoms and parasocial relationships perfectly. stan eventually talks about how he can relate to eminem’s songs on a personal level, not realizing that there’s millions of other fans who also resonate with his songs. it’s interesting to see how he slowly becomes more obsessed and infatuated with him to the point where it consumes him. i don’t even think eminem meant to write something that applies to everyone but i truly feel like every celebrity has their own group of “stans”

In an interview where he was asked if he ever bothered about the large female teen base, he replied, 'they're the most honest especially if you're talking about teenage girls but older as well. They have that bullshit detector, you WANT honest people as your audience. We're so past that dumb outdated narrative of 'Oh these are girls, so they don't know what they're talking about. They're the ones who know what they're talking about. They're the people who listen obsessively. They're fucking own this shit. They are running it'. Also another one where he was asked if he was worried about the fangirls not having musical taste and him being worried which he answered well. You could check that out. Its a bit long tho. I agree with everything you're saying and I am beyond annoyed that the term fangirl has such a negative connotation. Something I would like to point out though that I don't see talked about when discussing fangirls is how much of being able to be one is class-based, in the sense of, you need to have a certain amount of money, a certain lifestyle etc. to be able to be one. Most teenagers don't have a lot of their own income and if you want to buy most things your fave artist puts out, someone has to help you with that (which is not possible in many households). Another thing, it depends where you live. I am from a small country and many things I wanted to do to support my faves were just not possible. Going to concerts is extremely expensive, because it means we have to travel to another country (so hotel and transport fees end up being much more than just a concert ticket), lots of places do not ship to us (or the shipping is very expensive) and stuff like this. Just wanted to add this to the conversation, because I rarely see it mentioned - no hate to you jasmine, love you and the video. :)

Watching this video after skz got a bb cover and we were a💔 so excited for it but the article itself turned out to be dogshit 💔 literally so xenophobic reduced the whole fandom to screaming tweens and teens 😃 brought up irrelevant stuffs to stirr up controversy instead of focusing on their craft and then proceeded to compare them to other artists every two sentences 💔it was really heartbreaking because this article was supposed to be a celebration of their journey and hardwork but they got done so dirty 💔

Fangirls really live the best live. The video was great. I know it's about fangirls in specific but fanboys and fans of other genders are equally as important and even more made fun of

I was a massive fangirl when I was a teenager (hell, I’m now in my early 20s, and I’m still a fangirl haha). I’m now working as a music journalist 🤓

The video we were all waiting for and the world needs to hear!! I don't think there's anyone that would have spoken better about this topic. My pre-teen/teenage past self is feeling so validated right now ❤️‍🩹

i really recommed, for everyone who liked this video or like this topic in general, the podcast episode "it's time to stop shitting on stans", from "shit you should care about". it's also made *by* a fangirl so it's a really good contribution to the discussion too!!

incredible video essay as always!! very excited for your new dedicated project ❤️❤️❤️ so very happy you included Twice in your video. when it comes to kpop, i am so indebted to other fangirls because they help translate content for me. without them, i would not be able to connect to my idols. 🥹
