Mary Portas, Queen of Shops | Comfort & Joy | Divorced couple try to make a joint boutique work

Mary Portas is in Islington, north London, trying to rescue a struggling fashion boutique, Comfort and Joy, run by divorcees Ruth Llewellyn and Anthony Wilson. The shop is barely making enough for the two owners to take home the minimum wage, but Mary is convinced they have what it takes to make it a huge success.

I really felt for Ruth - its so hard to push yourself..... but Mary was right to push her to help gain confidence in herself

I really really like Ruth’s stuff. I bet he was a laugh a minute to be married to ! But even he thawed in the end

Yeah, she's really talented. I can see why she was struggling to scale up though - Mary was right about it being very 'Islington', for other women of Ruth's age and sensibility. There's plenty of them in that area, but I'm not sure why you'd go to a boutique for 5 or 6 of her pieces when she was previously selling them from a stall for presumably lower prices.

So so many of these business make over shows disclose a talented woman tied to a hapless man who is more of a hindrance to her than anything. They then see Mary/Alex as a threat.

I love the way he dismisses the ideas for improving the business. But clearly it’s not working so what exactly does he think IS the problem? Ah…of course….”the customer is wrong”. He is a classic example of someone who tries to tell his customer what they “ought to want” - the most simple recipe for failure. The guys a complete twonk.

The biggest problem here is that no matter how much you dress up this shop, it's surrounded by filth and scummy run-down common as muck trash establishments. Nobody wants to wade through manure even if they can pick a flower after doing so. I'd be surprised if this place lasted very long.

I haven’t finished the episode yet, but if Mary doesn’t insist that Ruth throw away her tacky scrunchies and messy bobby-pins, I’m going to be very disappointed.

Many of the fashions in this series didn't age well Having said that, I thought the woman had a bit of a condescending attitude, especially considering how nervous Ruth was ;( PS - I just found out that she (Melanie Rickey from Frazia) is actually *married* to Mary Portas!

I love mary boasts about magazine circulation. 150 to 200,000 sales in a month. The population of the UK is 67 million. So about 0.25% of the UK buys these mags.
