I think it's the line "the lord held me by my neck, I would die for you I would die for you he wept" is the one that was really hard to revisit. The toxicity of this line, relationship, everything, is really hard to hear. I really hope she gets access to a better environment and happiness. She is one of the most interesting artist right now, and no question the most important to me. I wish nothing but the best for her always

she was about to lose the motor function of her bowels and bladder. i think the line is either speaking to that, or to the sexual assault she endured so often at the hands of alexis. :( i hate that man. daughters is ruined forever for me. here's to hoping kristin can find peace one day, we love you

I appreciated that he gave her the space to talk about her trauma and didn't try to offer any hollow platitudes or interject any personal anecdotes to detract from her statements. It's isn't easy having to rebuild yourself from the ground up and sometimes just having a space where you can safely talk until you've said what you needed is just the tool to help.

Love Kristin so much. She made her way with Author and Punisher to a small ass venue in a small Swedish city while I was studying abroad there. It was a cramped room with less than two dozen people and it was insanely intimate. I really appreciate her talking publicly about alexis Marshall. The aspect of abuse in her music is one of the things that initially drew me to lingua ignota, and i relate to this sense of thinking you will not ever get to have that be known or resolved or redeemed- as hard and personal as im sure it is, it is truly touching to see her be able to state what happened to her for everyone to know in a way that a lot of people unfortunately dont ever get to do, and to take that step towards hopefully healing eventually

She talks about it at the end of the interview and shared a thorough statement via twitter. The most pressing details are that Alexis Marshall sexually abused her multiple times which caused her severe physical harm, he consistently threatened self-harm and used other textbook emotional abuse tactics as a way to control her and keep her in a relationship, and he has very likely done similar things to other women for a long time.

This interview is a real event for me. Actually I discovered Anthony Fantano via his first interview of her. I was looking for more information cause I completely fell in love with the Caligula album. A little bit after that I discovered You won't get what you want by Daughters and felt the same way about it. I was really happy at the time that Kristin and Alexis were together, the two minds behind the two best albums of the 2010's, a great potential artistic collaboration. Given the subject of her previous albums, I thought it would be impossible for him to reproduce the same kind of relationship with her... I'm really shocked discovering her surgery was because of him. I wish her all the best to heal the best way. We are all healing our traumas thanks to her art. Thanks Kritin, thank you Anthony

i really like how she talks about her music in the same way as a fine art/visual art practice. i think a lot of musicians put on a little bit of an anti-intellectualist cloak when they talk about their music (maybe in an attempt to seem more “relatable”?) and i like that she doesn’t do that
@methyod
@methyod 2 жыл бұрын
being seen as "pretentious" is a much harsher, more damaging appraisal than in fine art. it's hard to imagine an accusation of pretense being taken seriously in the fine art world: anyone talking about pretension de facto doesn't really belong in that space, emperor's new clothes and all that; express a negative opinion about Rothko and watch the steam come out of their ears. Whereas in music, whole genres are off limits to anyone who doesn't want to be dismissed as a pretentious, elitist snob, prog rock being the ur-victim of that treatment. What I appreciate in both domains, not exclusively of course but as sources of contrast, is artists with thick enough skins to go against the trends in their respective media and make highly conceptual, challenging, and alienating music, or technically virtuosic, beautiful, emotional visual art, maybe even something a little representational. Those are, of course, difficult roles to occupy if your goal is money or attention. At least in music, I don't know much about art, see: my Rothko opinion.

@@azorazan even worse, I have a goddamn Alexis Marshall shirt with "If you were a knife" caption. I followed them both on Instagram and they seemed happy enough, both posted stuff from their time together in Pennsylvania. You never know what is going on behind the scenes, I guess. Alexis is obviously a deeply troubled man, struggling with sex and substance addiction, as well as depression and other problems - even then it's no excuse for the abuse he inflicted on Kristin. Love the exploration of many voices around the 22:00 minute mark. I always felt that the songs among her career had a conversational feel. Within that, who is speaking is always dependent on the listeners experience. It allows space for internal exploration and confrontation, intense reflection and catharsis. It also reinforces my idea of "god" and how the idea of "god" is really just our own internal mental dialogues. Dialogues that we are maybe uncomfortable embracing so we assume come from something divine. Just my two cents, but fantastic interview!

I used to be very active in Christianity, and am no longer, and so much of what she talks about in her life and experience really resonates with me as well. It’s really cool to hear someone talk about this so openly, and to listen to her express this musically

Oh, and I wondered why I couldn’t find Alexis Marshall’s solo album on Apple Music last week, figured that albums disappear and come back time to time, so it’d be back eventually… Now, I’m doubtful that it will, and even if it did, I don’t think I’d be able to listen to it. First and foremost, I hope Kristin gets all the love, support, and healing that she needs. She’s a brilliant person, she deserves peace and happiness. Second, I genuinely hope that Alexis wakes up after this, that he actually can understand the hurt he’s caused, and that addiction and mental health struggles aren’t an excuse for abusive behavior, ever. It’s clear he’s very, very sick, and while I do think he needs to be held accountable, I reject retributive justice as a model of any justice at all, though that’s not the same as rejecting punishment as a consequence. I’m just saying, restoration, rehabilitation, and reparation as are models that actual attempt to facilitate real, meaningful justice, not revenge. And after reading her full letter, it’s clear that Kristin knows this better than almost anyone, and I’m genuinely moved by the fact that she seeks healing and health for AM, in spite of everything, as opposed to revenge or destruction. It took me so freaking long to get to the point that I can understand that intention, that level of compassion and grace, that very few people, religion or not, ever approach. He may not deserve it, but he needs it. Granted, that’s not her only intention: she’s also being a protector, trying to ensure nobody else ever is manipulated and damaged by AM. Bottom line, she’s incredibly brave, and so incredibly full of grace, and I’m incredibly moved by not just her art, but the complexity and humanity of her being that she’s revealed to us over the past few years. Walk in light and love, Kristin. Be well, fight like hell! ♾

I remember listening to this album escpecially around the time my grandma died, the last 2 tracks are such a great climatic finnish to the record, and it me on a whole other level, MAN IS A SPRING FLOWER was the soundtrack to a mental breakdown I had around that time, and THE SOLITARY BRETHEREN OF EPHRATA became a requiem I associated to my grandma

People usually concentrate on the cathartic/confessional aspects of this latest record. For obvious reasons, but I would just like to point out the musical qualities too. Great voice, singing in exploratory ways. really inventive and atmospheric use of sounds that often combine unexpected instruments to great atmospheric effect. Original and exploratory approach to harmonies, particularly in the vocals. It would be a shame if these things got overlooked in the commentary around abuse etc.

Ah man, I really hope they discussed that final section before agreeing to green light it. It felt like the discussion took a real turn. I can’t even imagine how emotionally draining it must be to discuss abuse in a public sphere, let alone an interview setting. As much as I appreciate her for being so open in her response, I can’t help but feel like everyone should be given their own time and space to move through that process of recovery, and if conversation on it arise, they do so out of the willingness of the survivor

He said they’d discussed this before the interview. She was completely onboard. Maybe even suggested it in the first place. She mentioned something about a 7000 word statement, and it sounded like she had sent that to him, as a sort of indication of the gravity of the situation. So she’s prepared for dealing with this subject. They both handled this expertly.

Great album, great interview. Fantano's been killing it lately with these. I'm kind of a lizard-brained "texture and feelings" music listener so the additional insight into the context and subject matter (had no idea of the Pennsylvania influence previously) make it much more impactful, as if there was room for that.

i absolutely suspected it. i had hoped it was more coming from someone who was directly confronting their inner demons, like addressing the darkest parts of their mind in music rather than acting on them, but i always had a feeling and hoped it was wrong. plus i’m wary of anyone who’s live presence has been described as “GG Allin-lite” on multiple occasions. idk. ironically i partially let my guard down about him BECAUSE of his relationship with kristin. but in hindsight that seems like a part of his MO - target abuse survivors, like a psychic vampire, while propping them up and talking about how brave and important they are, all whilst taking advantage of the worst of it behind closed doors. it definitely has me asking myself questions about how i listen to music. it’s the same thing with Swans, like even if there were people disputing larkan grimm’s account and stuff, i feel like i know deep down that he did it. the vibe is absolutely there. it sucks. because that expression is still intoxicating. and it drew me in for a reason. can’t listen to it now tho. i can do some, like i can listen to michael jackson and even some other famously awful people, but this one’s just too real. i can’t separate it from what he wrote because it’s so clearly reflected in what he wrote.
