I worked in a casino cleaning and one of the guys I joked around with most was around my age man from Crotia that had a wife and daughter. But he separated work from home life, maybe cause work there was shit or because there was so much turnover. He never even had a beer after work in the casino from what I remember.

I’ve heard it’s unhealthy to not have friends outside of work acquaintances. But I’m introverted enough that 40+ hours of being sociable with people at my job exhausts me to the point of not wanting to be sociable outside of the job. I make friends pretty easily when I’m forced to interact, but I still choose to spend my free time alone. Maybe that’s selfish, but it’s also where I’m most comfortable.

Its hard to make friends at work due to the fact that its hard to find someone within your age range with the same interest and hobbies. Even if you do, its not like they have the time to do so.

I wouldn't even say it's hard to find someone within your age that has similar interests as you. It can be anyone, even if they're older or younger. But one reason it's hard to actually be friends with cowokers, or almost anyone really is most likely because a lot of people work more than one job, have a family, go to school, ect, and simply don't have the time to, or don't have the time at all.

I worked at a Neighborhood Market Wal-Mart while I was going through trade school. I got along with all of my managers and coworkers and we all talked about how much we hated Wal-Mart, but none of us really hung out with each other outside of work. This new guy named Cameron came in who worked in a different department, so naturally I didn't go out of my way to talk to him (because I always focused on my work and made accidental work friends along the way.) Anyway, new guy and I crossed paths in the stock room and he said "You seem like a guy who's into metal." And we started talking and getting along. One day he invited me to his apartment because he thought I was really cool. I was hesitant because I like to be home, but I bit the bullet and went to his apartment. Turns out, he played music and showed me some of his work, which was really really good. He had no idea I fiddled with bass and I started learning a song, and he was astounded at what I could do. 3 years later, we're both out of Wal-Mart and in our preferred careers, he became my best man at my wedding, and we just released a single and are working on releasing an album. So as dreadful as it was working at Wal-Mart, the friendship I developed with Cameron was worth it.

Fanta, your smile when you talked about the 1% of people who can break up and remain friends, had me laughing so much. I worked with two people who were in a relationship and would come to work mad at each other and would gripe at each other the entire shift. So awkward, so uncomfortable to be around. ‘How can this get any worse?’ I would think, then they broke up..

I feel the same way, seeing them tomorrow at work. The other side to it is the unwanted possible gossip from people at work from hanging out with them outside of it. I've had many coworkers and one thing I've learned is to never assume how mature they may seem. I had one three years ago that was in his 50's but had the mind of a 10 year old.

These recent videos have really hit home on the situation I deal with at Wal-Mart on a daily basis. Being promoted initially was the first wake up call when I felt absolutely no pride or accomplishment in the news, and there are rants and stories galore, despite feeling like my time hasn't been as wild as others. Don't even get me started on their coming changes.

Hard to hang out with coworkers when everyone has a different work schedule or other things that take up time. I hung out with people from my last job a few times, but mainly because I was crushing hard on one of them (don't recommend btw). I'm glad I did but it's not like it made a huge difference for me. And I personally need a lot more alone time than most people so agreed 100% on that point.

On the pretending to not know someone part, it's not necessarily a matter of childishness(though if what you said about him before is true then maybe?). Some people, like myself, just don't see much point in putting time and energy into pointless interactions. If a relationship or friendship ends, a nod or base 'hey' might be made depending on the reason it ended but stopping to ask how life is going or other surface level chit-chat really doesn't serve a purpose. If the phases of life and values were still compatible, we'd still be in each other's life.

I think you have summed this up very well. It was pretty much the same for me. I think if you can find a junior high friend, when you were that young, and get to screwing around with them a lot, those are the friendships that can last. I think the problem is that we cling to how easier it was in those days, or so it seemed, but then when we get older, there's a LOT more stuff that people can get interested in, work certainly being one, to where hanging onto somebody is really very difficult. Once the people involved don't have to rely on their parents to drive them from place to place, and often that with great reluctance, there's just so much mobility that it actually does affect the way people behave, and I think it convinces them that people are pretty much disposable. You've been treated like that at the workplace, so contrast that to how the parents and the neighborhood kids treated you in younger years, and I think that's why we sort of cannot understand why all the sudden it seems you cannot latch onto friends any more. It may have a lot to do with staying single too. I lost my two best friends because they got married and I didn't. One told me directly that he couldn't have me around any more (which for some reason sounded logical at the time) while the other burned out within six months after the wedding date, of which I was his best man. Pitiful.

I have issues with temporary friendship >u>;; It's hard for me, in fact I don't even think I can comprehend it well. I have acquaintances and close friends. The friends that aren't close I can call friends comfortably, but I don't really think of them when I talk about my friends and don't usually look to them for the support I need, and I'm not as comfortable around them. I think close friendship offers a lot of what I need and want from social interaction in general. Social interaction is work for me (I'm autistic and socially anxious), so I guess being as strongly into the friendship as I am with my close friends without feeling like they're doing the same doesn't appeal to me. I guess it's almost like I can't see putting much energy into it as worth it if I'm not getting much out of it. I don't really think of friendship like a bank account exactly, but I don't wanna waste energy or spoons or whatever on people I can't get what I need from >u>;;

I ended up meeting with them all on Saturday when doing a Pokémon Go walk and met a group of people from a local discord channel along with people walking Downtown Cleveland. I share interests with most of them but that was the most fun I had with people ever. I never had common interests with people that actually wanted to be part of.

Very true, I was hired on as an assistant manager at Wendy's. The pay and the training was crap. The GM that trained me told me to spend most of the time in the office and don't help the team, if we hire a new person let the team train them. I thought that seems kind of stupid. 50 hours a week for 10 dollars an hour just wasn't my thing so I found another job and left after 6 months. Also it's crazy how many managers they have in one store, the one I was in had me and three other managers and a shift manager.

During my retail hell days, I liked my coworkers and hung out with a few of them. There are two former coworkers I still talk to and hang out with today. I never dated a coworker, although there was this one coworker who was a Colombian goddess I wanted to date. Her husband kept getting in the way of the that happening.
