Good stuff, Brad...as always. I appreciate how you're respectful to the amp and its history but mindful of the boundaries of safety and reality. I'm impressed by how well the makers documented it!

The best way to wire an accordion amp (used solely for accordions) is soldering the input hot straight to ground.
@goodun2974

Plug a guitar into the "Accordion" input on an old Ampeg or Magnatone amp ---- I'll bet you'll like it better than the "instrument" input! And for that matter, I've seen Ry Cooder playing slide guitar with accordionist Flacco Jimenez, and John Kirkpatrick playing accordion with Richard Thompson's band. Don't knock it if you havent heard it. It ain't like Polka!

I'm sorry, I didn't see the "Magisterium Guitars" thumbnail photo, on this tiny phone screen ---- you're in Portugal,right? You've probably heard/endured a lot more Accordion playing than I have! 😉

Thanks for this video mate! There are still some of this amps for sale here in italy , i think they sound great , same as other brands like FBT, Meazzi , Binson. The vented transformer is super cool, i've got some of those myself, for future projects , very similar to the ones used by Geloso in the 50s and 60s .

I love the EZ81 rect tube. We didn't use them a lot in our " 'Murican made " amps. That Farfisa is cute, and it sounds quite nice. It reminds me of Valco's old rat's nest amps, or Sanno, or Danno, or....Excelsior, or... A little arc gap on the voltage selector? No one truly uses 220 volts anymore. GE folded the plates on their 5AR4/GZ34s, and Philips Holland did something similar on one Dutch made GZ34 variant. Sylvania made their 5AR4s with boxed plates.

Facon caps are always gone in these amps and the big resistor after the EZ from hunts are normally way out of tolerance too as in meg ohms out. i got a couple of Farfisa and they are really great sleeper amps. Nice work.

Been into a few of those, also other small european brands nobody remembers now anymore (Solton, Dynacord, WEM, etc). I love to tinker aroound within such really PtP wired devices but there is issues, especially on resistors to get the correct parts with sufficient wire length and reasonable diameter

Nice work! I love those little low watt, oddball amps. Dual speakers is very cool. Gotta say, The paper on those sounds a little tired. Wish I could hear it in the room though. ❤

I would have liked to have heard it through a 10 inch or 12 in speaker or perhaps a 4 by 10 cabinet. There was a little bit of distortion at modest volume that sounded like the Mic or preamp overloading.

Accordions had microphones inside of them. I have a few 1990s Japanese made crystal mics for accordions somewhere around this mess.

At 14:30, a Dymo label inside the cabinet that reads " Made In Italy"! I still have a Dymo label maker around here somewhere and probably some of the ribbon tape for it as well, although I'll bet the adhesive may have dried out in the past decade or two. Obviously I'm old enough to pre-date the Brother P-Touch labeling machines!

You can still get the label maker, though it is cheaply made plastic now. But the tape is still available too, there are even cheap Chinese knockoffs. There does however exists one expensive labelmaker that uses metal tape.

Hey Brad, loving the videos. Question: what’s your criteria for replacing cathode bypass caps? In this one you replaced all of them, is that due to age or bad ESR or just precautionary to ensure reliability?

The "dark" voicing of these amps was intentional - as they were mainly intended be paired with Farfisa Keyboards - wider bandwidth than guitar, particularly on bottom end. Played these in the 70's ...... Note how the controls/labels are just a little weird as well. Great demo of, the need to alter frequency response in circuits like this - which also apply to the ever popular film projector and old PA conversions to guitar amps. Sometimes the work ok, most of the time not. Great video.

Before Brad rewired the transformer for proper 240 volts, that 6 volt rectifier probably heated up at 7 volts, and the overly high filter capacitance probably didn't help.

Is this a 2x8 cabinet? I don't remember from the first video but it looks like it could be. Maybe 2x10. In my home build 5F1, I asked the cabinet guy to make me a 5E3 sized cabinet with a 1x12 baffle and a 2x8 baffle. It was a fun project but it doesn't have the Italian design flair this has nor does it have tremolo 😁

If this were my amp I was working on, I'd replace the rectifier with solid state diodes, and increase the PSU resistor by 150 ohms. That should in theory give identical performance, whilst sidestepping the limitations of the EZ81. I do understand though that some people like to keep their amps "all valve," or at least relatively original.
@BradsGuitarGarage
@BradsGuitarGarage 7 ай бұрын
Yes, I'd do the same. It's a good way to simulate that rectifier sag, which I'm personally not a fan of anyway, but each to their own.

I'm surprised you reinstalled the original flatblade screws that hold the chassie into the cabinet. I would have replaced those with Phillips or Torx or a hex head, something easier to get in and out of a tight spot.

Originality on flatheads is cool though. It’s nice indicator of age for me when I look inside something.

@@ColeWheeler4Lyfe , it's period- correct hardware, yes, but inappropriate for recessed locations with poor access; an aggravation to the next technician who discovers the amp had obviously been serviced and subsequently reinstalled with the same inappropriate hardware. Using appropriate hardware for the job at hand is every bit as valid and important as using appropriate components for circuit repairs!
