Good Job Chickenhawk. Oh and WOW, This was a costly test comparison, as per the twist rates shoot-out. really clever. So far, were have barrel length comparisons, now twist rates among many other types of testing... Before too long, the perfect rifle will be arriving on shelves soon. Not that the previously custom made rifles were not worthy, that isn't what I am saying, but rather, all of these testings and break-through's hone a rifle system for a tailored desire can be achieved, lessoning the need to focus on oddity's that takes away from simply being able to point and shoot. Example, the more precise a rifle system is, you only need to worry about windage and elevation, vs, like my old 10-22 rifle that I purchased from SEARS & Roebuck some 30 to 35 years ago with my dad. You gotta deal with horrid sights, sloppy furniture fitment, loose butt-stock plate, poorly reamed chamber to cartridge fitment, (no, SAAMI spec here, LOL) loose barrel strap to wood furniture clamp, which it came like that from the factory for the most part. But, that is what was all that was required in a trainer rifle system, hence the title "trainer" as $59.00 doesn't buy a kid much precision, while it was understood, that we would be carrying them over our shoulders to and from school for gym class, and after school shooting sports, and Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts of America shooting leagues and events and conservation club events. Heck, a rifle case or rifle bag, back then, cost more then my 10-22 "poor mans Marlin Model 60. These rifles were gonna get beat all to heck, and in order to shoot them, you had all sorts of issues to pay mind to, sloppy features, horrible sights, and the competitive nature of some of the other fellow students that had more money that my family did, my junky rifle is all we could afford, but, I loved that rifle, and still have it to this day, in all its GLORY of sloppiness and 90 foot groupings at 15 yards, lol.. As a child, I never would have thought, .22 rim fire rifle systems would or could ever be so advanced as like what you and so many others are doing with custom built machines of wonderful ability's. If I would have shown up with one of your rifles back then as a kid to school intermural shooting sports, everybody would have thought I was from the future and came back in time like the movie "Back to the Future", LOL... And for those folks who do not know, YES, not to long ago, in our beloved country, the United States of America, we children, used to carry firearms to and from school, or rifles that is. That was normal activities. Nothing ever happened involving shooting accidents, or assaulting of a teacher or another student, with the use for firearms. Even in the extreme of situations, of two students getting into a fight, they would of course fight it out, and NEVER ONCE was it a thought, to use the firearms to shoot and kill one or the other or many. I can remember a fight broke out, and both students had other students hold their rifles, as if they were handing off their book bags or back packs, it was foreign nature to desire to kill somebody, while also knowing, that you would get in serious trouble is such were to happen, more then simply getting into ta fist fight, that at worst, resulted in bloody noses and black eyes.. But never the intent to shoot and kill one another... When the fight was over, they each acquired their belongings, and finished walking home or waiting on the school bus to arrive. Let alone, no toehr students would have ever allowed such an event to take place if that were to ever elevate, all based on how we were all raised, you live to fight another day. Pardon the NOVEL again.. Just a fun video, that got me thinking of how so many things have changed in the mechanical world, to the social world. I really have enjoyed watching your rifle builds, and the fact that you are so willing to share with the world what you have learned at each stage of this adventure, I highly respect that. Even when you pose a question, of something that you are unsure of, I enjoy that freely too, as more times then not, are questions that I would have never thought of all on my own, and once you mention these up in the air type questions, I now can watch for things now too. I like to be inspired, and all of you guys, Rick, Ray, Echo, and a hand full of other professionals, well, this stuff is priceless. I think you for the efforts. Well done Kenny. And well done Chickenhawk. Chickenhawk, is gonna be a force to be reckoned with in the competition shooting events, I am quite sure that you are exceptionally proud of him.

Has anyone thought of the idea to start-off with slow twist...say 1:16, and throughout the barrel length of (say) 24"...end up with 1:9 toward the end? The thinking is you won't impart a super-fast twist rate right at the point of ignition.....like starting a car a 6000 Rpm. Too fast of a twist too soon .....may ( in this micro-second world) start deforming the lead bullet a bit more and a slower initial twist rate might help this?

As an old retired rimfire benchrest shooter and rifle builder, I find your videos interesting, although a totally different game. I find it interesting you seem to be shooting without wind flags, which is something we'd never do. LOL As for barrel twist, I had the best performance using 17.7 twist barrels in both accuracy and wind deflection. I enjoy your videos, stay after it.
@EagleEyeShooting Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the appreciation. I do have a video I recently released on a bench rest 22LR build testing indoors and talking about twist rates. To take perspective, bench rest being a new discipline to me, many that shoot 22LR in competition or just plain varmint hunting, E.G prairie dogs. Winds flats are never used. We do incorporate some aspects of bench rest such as defocusing parallax to read thermals or just using natural terrain elements to give best wind call. This is a test of marksmanship not just the gear. Wind flags can be considered a crutch and will rarely be seen in the prs or typical hunter

Eley tenex shoots extremely well out of my Christensen Arms Ranger. But,...from a cold, clean barrel/bore it (and so far every other ammo I've shot cold/clean) drops the first shot low and left and next 4 cluster decently. My barrel seems to like 5 rounds of 'foulers' to settle down. I am in no way suprised Kenny already knew the outcome of this test before making the video. LOL Great video guys and I really enjoy the father/son team efforts. Good stuff!!

@diegocn1232 жыл бұрын
The question is does fast twist work better in a shorter barrel? i.e. in an 8 inch barrel the bullet will only be rotated 1/2 turn before leaving the traditiomal 1:16 barrel.

If someone were to order a custom 22lr barrel, and they aesthetically like the look of longer barrels, what twist rate would you recommend for tighter groups with say a 24 to 28, possibly 30 inch barrel? Cause if someone was gonna drop the money anyway, and they can get tighter groupings with a wide variety of 22s, and still have the long barrel look that they desire, why not go for it?

Go to a hundred yard indoor ranger and do the testing if you want to believe the results. You have to eliminate the wind to see the difference due to the twist rate.

Hey Kenny, what's the make of the 1:16 20" barrel? I heard you mention that the 1:12 is Lothar Walther (Have one on my Rim-x today in 24") but have found that it doesn't like Eley. She shoots about 2MOA at 300 with SK LRM, but am considering another twist (1:14, etc). Really want to shoot a lighter colored bullet to help with tracing like what Eley provides.

I think the faster twist rate would be nice for some custome loads. like a 40gn copper solid and some slow powder to make use of the long barrel. I saw a listing for primed 22 brass but thought it was just as expensive as match ammo. a heeled solid copper could be made if you had a lathe handy. like put a factory 224 solid in a collet and cut the heel. Nice shooting little hawk
