The Bickford seam is an alternative vertical seaming technique to the popular mattress stitch, and unlike the mattress stitch it results in a flat seam on the front and back of the knitting.
This is therefore a great technique to use for hats and similar items, where the 'ridge' created by the mattress stitch method would be uncomfortable.
The downside of the Bickford seam compared to the mattress stitch is that it's not as sturdy, and also it's more visible on the right side of the knitting.
The method is nice and simple though, as it just involves going through either 'knots' or 'loops' right on the edge of the stockinette stitch selvedges.
I hope the video is useful to you!

Very helpful video, especially for weaving seams on socks made on flatbed machine. A great reminder on how I used to do seams. Thank you!

Very Useful! I've been knitting off & on for decades and have always just "winged" any seaming I had to do, trying to be as neat as possible. Earlier I watched a video on the mattress stitch and tried using it on my current project. After seeing the Bickford Seam, I might just pull out the first seam I've done and use the Bickford instead. It definitely looks neater, especially for knitted infant clothing. Thanks.

Thank you. I had never heard of this method for seaming! I am not sure where I would use it because I would probably be unhappy with the visible "dashes" of yarn running up each column of stitches but it is always nice to know a technique is there in case it is just the thing to use in a situation. Loved your clear and easy to follow video.

very useful, thanks. My pattern says "join raglan shapings using a "flat seam". I will try this method.

I've just found your channel and I love your clear, well-paced delivery. I have a question about the Bickford Seam - can this be used to join raglan sleeves? I've been knitting for years, but I feel that my sewing up is never as good as I'd like. Would you consider doing a tutorial on sewing up raglans, set in sleeves, etc.?

Thank you very much :) I think that would be possible; I would just say that the bickford seam isn't as invisible from the outside as other seaming methods, nor quite as strong. I certainly plan to do jumper knitting tutorials in the future, but I think that's going to be quite a way off! Try VeryPink on KZfaq - her videos are very good and cover those kinds of topics.
