This 1970s instructional film for school bus drivers, "Fatal Stop", covers the potential dangers that could come about from a sloppy inspection of the bus before driving it somewhere. It shows bus drivers correctly inspecting their bus as well as one bus driver who does his work badly. I was a school bus driver for several years, and you check EVERYTHING, and sign a logbook, before you leave your parking space. So even if you're in the parking lot(compound with other buses, or your own driveway, you can be stopped by the DOT, and go through the entire circle check again, with them over your shoulder. It's IMPERATIVE that it's done. You are considered a professional and that demands that if you screw up, you're dealt with accordingly. But that was 30 years ago and I don't know what has changed since.

Even though he didn't have reflectors or flares, he should have turned on all of the lights (hazards, stop lights, etc.) to get the bus as visible as possible. On a side note, at 12:14, they start using music from the 1968 horror movie "Night of the Living Dead".

Looks like the era when I was a kid riding the school bus. We were little monsters who did our best to give our bus drivers a nervous breakdown! Some in turn really laid down the law and kept us practically in lockdown on the bus. P. S. That club they hit the tires with is called a tire thumper. With a little practice a bus or truck driver can use it to quickly tell by the sound if a tire’s air pressure is roughly where it should be. It’s also probably not a coincidence that it can be used as a weapon!

I carry a tire thumper as my work pickup uses higher pressure tires for towing. My TPMS will give me pressure, but I don't rely on it. Plus, a dangerously bad tire doesn't (usually) ring the same, although that's a structural thing, not inflation

Too much emphasis on schedules, not enough on safety. A tragedy could have been prevented.

In middle school/high school, the kids on my bus were hellions. When we got to loud, the bus driver would pull over, change the radio station from local rock station to the classical music station, blast it and we got the hint to sit down and shut up.

That is, if you had a radio. If there was a radio on the bus, an affluent student would bring it(I had brought one because I liked rally music).

7:49. That's how those buses were back in the 1970s. Sticks. Four or five speeds. Probably had to double clutch. Today's school bus drivers probably wouldn't make it out of the parking spaces with a bus like that. 7:12: The old parking brakes were on the floor next to the shifter. That's going all the way back.

I was on a bus years ago, and the brakes went out, the driver stopped the bus by going into a nearby cornfield, no one was hurt or injured, and the bus never tipped over, everyone returned home okay, It was later determined that a brake line had blown.
