In the service bay today is a poorly running 2010 Jaguar XF. Customer complained of a drop off when approaching speeds of 90MPH or a stumble when starting up after an overnight sit. But it is really inconsistent as to when the problem occurs.
We started off with testing all of the basics. Ignition, computer controls and fuel pressures. All systems actually showed no concerns and no codes present. We had great performance on all test drives and not one drop out.
It wasn't until we took a 45 minute break on the third day that we experienced and small "hiccup" during routine idle. We decided to investigate deeper into the fuel pump and perform a series of tests using our oscilloscope. What we found was that we did indeed have a failing fuel pump. One of the armitures was drawing additional amperage through the circuit. Just about an amp more than spec.
When we physically removed the pump for inspection, we became immediately aware of the burnt terminals at the Petrol Flange portion of the pump. The terminals were our proof that the pump was failing ever so slightly at this point, but a complete failure was not far behind.
Once the original pump and petrol flange were replaced, the Jaguar ran lights out.
