I made this video by special request for Jessica! But hopefully it helps many of you :)
The brake pad thickness gauge I use in this video: amzn.to/3ktXGiF (well, mine's a Mac, but this one is cheaper and is the same thing!)

While I'm on the subject of NY state inspections, in NY, your car will pass with bad ball joints. There was too much scamming by unscrupulous mechanics, and the inspection rules were changed years ago.

That's an exaggeration. Really in Michigan we don't have to measure brake pads and replace them because the car will rust away to nothing before the brakes wear that far. Unless your car prematurely falls into one of the potholes and is gone forever.

One item to add, on brake pads that have the groove in the center of the pad, it is a wear indicator, if you can look into the caliper and the pads are worn to the bottom of the groove, it's time for new pads.

Good stuff Faye. I love doing brakes!!! Disc can be mindless. But shoes I do enjoy because I think today it’s a lost art. My 62 MG Midget has shoes on all four corners and the fronts are different from the back. Don’t know if they are supposed to be this way but no biggie . Still use pliers and a screw driver, one day I will convert to front disc and maybe disc front and back. Also may one day buy brake changing tools. Really enjoy this video and AAG show always good info. My son worked for the local Toyota Dealership and he wanted to take my truck and do the brakes to show he knew more than just changing oil. I let him but for front and back new rotors, drums, shoes, and pads they wanted $559.00. I went and got the same part from a dealer supplier for $236.00. Several weeks after doing the brakes he got called in the office and was put in charge of the oil and lube center on Saturdays . Got to start somewhere

I think that's easy to understand how the brake pads wear for anyone that has had a bycicle, and why it's so important to have good brakes and in good shape, the whole system; for your own safety and everyone else when you've to brake the car or in an emergency need, if someone doesn't consider the safety in a car as an important value... imo they shouldn't drive a car, maybe drive a bycicle, use the public transport or... just walk. But a car it's different and not all the types of cars or brake systems are the same, so i think you've explained well how to measure the status of your brake pads and why it's important.

I just use the space in the middle of the pad. I've been told they are for break dust removal like slots on rotors but I always use them like the wear indicators on tyres. If the pad is level with it i.e. the space is no longer there then change them out. That way you don't have to measure just look through the inspection window. I don't have to buy tools and I think it's simpler for the diy masses. 😉✌🏼

I don't install sensors because I change pads yearly myself. So cheap and easy always replace with new guide pins and synthetic brake grease. Salt and winter conditions really degrade brakes so paint calipers with ceramic paint to keep down corrosion issues. Great info about inside single piston calipers like on my Toyota that wear quicker. Had that issue when brakes were squealing looked fine from outside rotor but inside started to score. Going to peek thru that square window now on. 🙌

Thanks for your very informative video! I redo the slide pins use the best brake lube and replace all hardware when I service my brakes. Time is not a factor for me. I feel that many shops don’t redo the slides unless there is an obvious issue, often causing binding / uneven pad wear because of dried up grease worn out pins. Always watch till the end for the chicken status update.

I really like the plastic set, where they have a "tooth" so it's easier to measure without taking the wheel off (assuming of course you have access to the pad material) Whether or not you actually like machining rotors, I Love that on car brake lathes are a thing! & because they're essentially cheap parts (for the most part) anyway, replacing pads & rotors & preforming a brake fluid exchange is pretty therapeutic. Drum brake services, without drum brake tools, is just a Gigantic patience tester 😆
