Part 4: we shall see!!
The camshafts shown in this video are: briancrower.com/makes/toyota/... and HUGE THANKS to Brian for taking time out of his day to speak with me and be candid and honest with us. Doesn't this make you love their products even more now? I know I do! This was 100% unplanned. He had no prior knowledge that I would be calling, and I don't think he has a clue who I am - just a customer with questions that he is trying to do his best to please. How freaking AWESOME IS THAT.

I have built, 4 engines, and for everyone had to double check triple check, had a shop check it ,on every part. I went to school for it , I had the pro people in my area teaching me ,and I wish I had listened more. Glad to see you show how much goes into this, my pro drag motor takes a month to build by a person with a shop, me 6 months. So keep doing and listen to the pros like Danny, you will be fine ,and more knowledgeable about it.

Hello Faye and Danny what a incredible video on cam shafts and checking the cam lift and degreeing the cam. I assembled a few engines in my life V8s mostly like 45 years ago when I was younger and never did the checking or doing any degreeing after watching you and Danny I wish I had the tools and experience to do that back then. I'm thankful for people like you and Danny and others who I have watched over the years have really thought me a lot about engine building and assembly. Wishing you both well Take Care

Danny and Brian are right. you're not building a rocket ship. don't dwell on the .0000+/-. even if the cam was perfect, the problem will still continue through the valve spring hight/weight. the valve keeper relief ect. nothing is exact. In my opinion, as Brian said, even if it was, you wouldn't notice much of a difference on the dyno. but keep the videos coming! I enjoy watching you on TV. but even more on your KZfaq channel. I hope to get a chance to meet you someday day. happy wrenching!

Great video Faye, would you have those cams ground to match your lowest lift so they are all perfect. I really enjoy you calling the cam grinder. To me he kinda of gave you an answer that he didn't want to be bothered when you asked him if the difference matters and he said yes and no and then basically said what Danny said you would not notice but now you know. Very interesting video and your diligence to perfection and how you proceed..Great group of people

This is awesome. Enjoying the process is what I'm all about. The call with BC was great too. I'm glad he was honest that it's NOT supposed to be like that, but the lower volume older cams use a manual process and will have more variation. Fantastic as always!

Hello Faye! I have been watching you and Danny as much as possible (videos). This video is so great because I am learning engine tear down and assembly right now in school. With another classmate we are taking apart a 1.6 liter (or 1.8?) 1997 honda civic engine right now. When taking off the valve spring and or lifters and keepers in general is there a special tool to use? Also is there a video of yours in which you have putting an engine back into a vehicle or taking out with your super guided process with excellent learning tips and tricks? Seperate project we are also putting an '06 Nissan Altima 2.5 liter engine back in. Thanks so much for your time and reading consideration!

I bought adjustable cam gears to use with my stock 7mgte cams after it had a full rebuild done professionally, as a Fitter Machinist myself I understand the importance of these differences, after all the machining to the block and head and then throw in the laminated stainless steel head gasket etc you really do need the adjustable gears to be able get it all timed right, my engine builder degreed my cams in compensating for the slightly higher C/R it ended up with.

If my math is correct, the difference between the lowest and highest lobe on the exhaust is 0,0055" wich is 0,1397mm. And that is ALOT! unless if they are just grinding with a angle grinder, in that case it´s an OK tolerance i guess. It´s not hard to hit a 0,03mm tolerance with a clapped out, fully analoge lathe. So there´s no excuse to have a spread of 0,14mm on a grinder. However, does it matter on this? Probably not. But it would be interesting to measure the bearing surfaces on that cam too.
@JohnnyFTD
@JohnnyFTD 2 жыл бұрын
That difference is huge, but like in the video they are doing that manual because of the request for her engine is not as popular as other engines.

Hey Faye, I don’t think you’re going backwards you put a foot forward and check the footing for the next step. I’m curious about what you’re gonna do I think the explanation for the variance sounded reasonable and I would think there good to go or do you try to get CNC cams from another source i’m glad dan is there I’m sure he’s face similar situations in the past and will know what to do. This is a great series this one was a little bit longer than normal but it flew by already can’t wait for the next one have a great one as always 🐔🐔🐔👍

Thank you so much I was definitely worried about putting out a video this long because it's not normal for me!! But I'm 100% going to run these cams. Honestly knowing that they're made by a human makes them even more special to me!! And both Brian and Danny had the same idea that it would never make a difference on the Dyno and the engine wouldn't know.

You have to subtract valve lash from the lift measurement you took directly from the cam, so exhaust numbers should all be 10" less. Intake 8" less.

I think what the poster is trying to say is that when you measured the lift with the cams installed that is why you were getting a lower lift number because you have clearance between the cam and valve bucket

Hi Faye! I wanted to get your opinion. I have a 1999 Ford Ranger I'm going to use for hauling garbage to the dump. Not my daily. It has the 2.5L with a rod knock. I was thinking about getting new bearings, polishing the crank shaft and rod journals best I can (without removing the motor). I've watched some videos saying that'll last a year or more. That will give me some time to build a new motor. Do you think this is a reasonable temporary repair?
