I really just wanted to comment that i prefer the calming background music during your narration so much better than any loud and more obnoxious music since it allows me to hear perfectly what Faye is saying. So many KZfaq videos have that loud music playing thinking it's cool but really it's super annoying. Great video.

I’m an older (68) auto enthusiast. Only ever worked on cars up to the 70’s, and the skills needed to get newer vehicles functional are well beyond my abilities. I’m really impressed with your knowledge and attention to detail, which make these videos both informative and interesting. I would never attempt to tackle a job like this, but really appreciate your abilities and willingness to teach through this medium.

The first time I dealt with a double overhead cam engine was my 1969 Alfa Julia TI 1600cc chain drive, I was 13 years old. The setup was the same as the engine in this video, the only pain in the butt part was setting the lobe to valve stem gap with shims under the cups.

That's great advice. I remember having to do filing and shimming in lieu of such impressive adjustable cam sprockets back in the old days. Also, while Snap-On is not generally the best value, and I confess that I do love their traditional ratchets, the torque wrench as far as I know is unbeatable for accuracy and repeatability. Nice.

Doing work like this is so much easier with the engine out! When we do this on our PT Cruisers, the whole front of the car comes apart, right down to the radiator and wheels. Then one of our tricks is to take off the torque struts, so it's just loosely hanging, and jack the engine up to remove the timing cover and get working space. And just to make it more interesting, there's a pair of hard A/C lines that run overtop and are right in the perfect spot to get in the way. It's always a fun job, and we practice our swearing 🤣. This was fascinating! I can't believe how similar the timing is on this engine compared to the 2.4s. In fact, I've always wondered if the 2.4 is a Mitsubishi designed engine or something. Great job! This advice will come in handy!

We never set TDC with a dial indicator as there is some variable. We just used an old sparkplug with a small extended pin welded to the end. Rotate one direction till engine stops and mark degree wheel. Rotate back till it stops and mark degree wheel. What lies between those two marks is true TDC.Back in 1981 we built an adjustable cam gear on a small block Chevy running at Talladega. We used a Cloydes gear taper cut on the back side to fit into a machined cam plate. We had a discussion on how to fasten it. Our machinist said a tapered machine bolt had more holding power than anything else. He produced some female tapered washers and the tapered screws fit tight into them. Rather simple and it indeed had superior strength over anything else. We split the cover in two to facilitate adjustment. Keep in mind there was no adjustable valve train gear available. Well we set the gear up advanced and ran it. Then I retarded it and ran again. Unfortunately no gain was achieve, but the system did work. We ran 197 mph in a ARCA car, 2 mph faster than a Winston cup car.
@FayeHadley
@FayeHadley Жыл бұрын
Yes, if you follow the link that I included in the video, you will see the piston stopper that I used to mark my TDC on the crankshaft! I had the actual tool, but a modified spark plug sounds so creative!!! And I love the idea of splitting the cover in 2 for adjustment! Bummer that you didn't notice a difference!!
@tomnekuda3818
@tomnekuda3818 Жыл бұрын
Good job! To get perfect TDC is pretty difficult to get without a dial gauge but you can get pretty close by using a stop in cylinder #1 and splitting the arc.....sort of a po'boy(or girl) solution. That said, advancing or retarding a cam can make a big difference in the power and torque of the engine. My oldest daughter loves working on our dirt bikes, cars, lawnmower, etc. Wouldn't know what to do without her. Tom P.S. That is a really sweet set of cam gears! I went thru this with my Cosworth Vega years ago and I would have liked a set of gears like that.

Those 5 Allen head screws that hold the each cam in place must be made out of some really good type of metal. Doesn't seem like much to be holding a cam in place under all that pressure. I'm sure the manufacturer must have done a lot of testing on that though.

They acted like they had no idea who I was and never machined my engine. I can't stand them. At least own up and apologize. That's all I wanted - just to know it wouldn't happen to anyone else. Didn't need my money back. But at that time, it was every dollar I had. I was working for $15 a flat rate hour. I worked so hard to be able to afford my engine machine work.

So many late nights at Shawn's and I replaced practically everything trying to figure out the "running lean" issue - what I thought it was! But just running badly. I didn't figure it out until I pulled the motor back out just a few years ago. I have since called, and left a bad review, but I think the business is gone now. I'm a little surprised that you'd go for a timing belt engine for your build. I don't really trust belts, especially in these days of interference engines, where a broken belt could mean a wrecked engine. And I'd dread having to replace them every couple of years. Obviously you know something I don't; so have you had good luck with the rubber belts so far?
@FayeHadley
@FayeHadley Жыл бұрын
In the late 80s, early 90s, most Toyota engines were belt driven. This is a non-interference engine. As I mentioned in the video, this is an extremely strong belt. The force it took to back those ARP bolts out of the camshafts, even with red threadlocker, and the belt STILL didn't break.... 3 times.... so yes, I have had extremely good luck with these belts. Zero concerns.
