I was looking for this today but couldn't find anything.
So many good scenes from Fear And Loathing are missing from here, maybe i should put some up.
The performances are legen-wait for it- dary and in this case the "that's argh, argh" is pure awesomeness.
Must have watched Fear and Loathing more than 14 times now..

Benicio Del Toro wasn't in The Rum Diary. The character you're probably thinking about resembles Dr Gonzo (Oscar Zeta Acosta) but was an entirely different character named Sala played by Michael Rispoli.

I cant remember the timeline, someone feel free to correct me, but the character Dr. Gonzo was based off of, was killed by police in a nightclub raid, either before or after the events of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

He was originally going to play Sala, but didn’t for some reason. Zeta Ocosta’s fate is unknown. He disappeared around age 39 or so and thought killed in Mexico.

I always tought Depp was the most f*** up of the two guys, because of this scene in particular. 😂But Benicio probably was, more volatile and unpredictable, and menacing. He reminds me of a friend I had back in the ninetees, a dude who I probably should have stayed away from but became a friend nonetheless and I had some memorable times with. Never a dull moment with that guy, always chaos and often some kind of trouble. He was taken away in an ambulance from my small hometown music festival. Two years in a row. The ambulance medics even recognized him second time around.

Acid is so weird. The last time I experienced it I found myself wearing an entire outfit made of sheets. I had a hood, a scarf, i somehow folded or tied it into a pair of pants and as a shirt I had origami’d one of the sheets into a kind of Pancho Villa number.

Its definitely a much more fun/funny and almost Recreational trip than mushrooms in my opinion though. Shrooms can be full on depressing, introspective, show you what needs to change in your life and make you realise many things. Shrooms made me apologize to people who I wronged in the past...acid on the other hand is definitely as depicted in this movie. Usually just a fun whacky time0

Lucy, and the waitress are all scenes in this film that could've been done without.. The book is such a different tone than the film, the film tries to make it a dark comedy when the book itself was more mystery and psychological drama

I consider it the exact reverse. The book is more of just a darkly funny thing, but the film is somewhat deeper and is more about the book's legacy. The novel itself feels 'speedy' and very assured, whereas the movie 'feels' more like liquor, if that makes any sense. The film is more poignant.

Dr. Gonzo met Lucy in the sky via airplane and when they drop her off in the taxi Raul says they had to let her go and the sign in the background says lose diamonds. They should have left that last part in this video so people can see what a Fear and Loathing geek I am..

Duke didn't kiss the cop (and the cop didn't suggest it) in the book; it was added as a kind of punchline to the scene for the movie. It's always bugged me, because Duke says "I felt raped" afterwards, which was meant to infer how the cop had treated him, not that the cop had made him kiss him in the middle of nowhere. MINOR criticism though. (I read the book so many times that when the movie came out, I was able to mutter the lines in sync in the theater.)

Duke was way more sober and the situation was already so fucked up he, like the previous answer said, used reverse psychology by having such an extreme talk that Gonzo could sober up and realize how absurd the situation he put himself in was, so they could more rapidly find a way to clean this mess, hence the sudden change of tone when he went from “lets do money on forcing this girl to get gang raped” to telling his partner what was likely going to happen once Lucie would come down. Hope I explained my thoughts clearly :)

Basically Gonzo was banging the girl, and when Duke saw her he knew they had to get rid of her fast. So he starts fucking with Gonzo, first by coming up with a bunch of messed up scenarios, then telling Gonzo if they kept her he would spend his life in jail or “go to the gas chamber” lmao. By the end he’s convinced Gonzo that they’ve got to ditch her asap
