CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Duke (Johnny Depp) and Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) attend the DA's Convention and listen to Dr. Bumquist's (Michael Jeter) bizarre speech on drugs.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Twelve Monkeys, The Fisher King) directed this colorful, stylized, pseudo-psychedelic $21-million adaptation of the 1971 Hunter S. Thompson classic, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey into the Heart of the American Dream, about stoned sportswriter Raoul Duke, Thompson's alter ego, on a wild drug-crazed road trip, a paranoid plummet into the belly of the beast, with his pal, lawyer Oscar Zeta Acosta. Originally serialized in Rolling Stone (November 1971), the book catapulted Thompson headfirst toward the Kerouac-Mailer-Capote pantheon and jump-started the entire movement of "gonzo journalism." Carrying a suitcase of drugs, Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp with shaved pate) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) drive a red convertible across the Mojave from L.A. to Vegas, where Duke has an assignment to cover the Mint 400 desert motorcycle race. As the drugs kick in, Duke ventures into voiceover, filling in the blank spots and narrative gaps. "This is not a good town for psychedelic drugs," says Duke, but even so, they consume vast quantities, eventually escalating to ether. Duke notes that with ether "you can actually watch yourself behaving this terrible way, but you can't control it." The two trash their hotel room, and Gonzo goes back to L.A. Thinking the hotel room holocaust will lead to an arrest, Duke begins a drive back to L.A., but after an odd encounter with a highway patrolman (Gary Busey) and a telephone conversation with Gonzo, he returns to Vegas to cover the District Attorney Convention on Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs in the glitzy Flamingo Hotel. This time the drugged-out duo trash their Flamingo room. The crazed carnival atmosphere segues into a carney casino, Bazooko's Circus, where a barker (Penn Jillette) spiels amid aerialists, clowns, and a rotating carousel bar. Gonzo worries over runaway teen Lucy (Christina Ricci), who paints portraits of Barbra Streisand. Soon the hallucinations begin: Duke sees Gonzo transmogrify into a demon with breasts on its back, and an acid vision of a Vegas bar features large legit lounge lizards (courtesy of monster makeup man Rob Bottin). Flashbacks depicting Duke's intro to the drug scene jump back to love-Haight relationships in San Francisco's Summer of Love. Cameos and guest stars include Mark Harmon, Cameron Diaz, Flea, Lyle Lovett, Harry Dean Stanton, Ellen Barkin, Tobey Maguire, and Hunter S. Thompson himself. The film features a Geffen Records soundtrack mixing rock of the period with Vegas lounge tunes. Over the years, various script adaptations came and went as did numerous talents; people connected with past efforts to film Thompson's book include Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, and writer-director Alex Cox. Shown in competition at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.

Now you have a society full of marijuana smokers that deny and don't even realize that they are addicts too and can't stop smoking. The weed corporations increased the THC content and got people hooked just like they did with tobacco and nicotine. They even convinced the ignorant masses that smoking this leaf is "healthy". Nevermind that smoking burnt carbon still damages your lungs the same long-term. They've solved the problem they had with tobacco smoking. Everything is a rich man's trick.

@@jish55 I don’t think that’s the main point. In the book, Raoul Duke makes notice of all the police gathered at the Flamingo for the DA conference and says something along the lines of “Here are all these cops, gathered in Las Vegas saying ‘we need to come to terms with the drug culture’. But they didn’t even know what it was”. Since this happens after that part of the book, I’m inclined to believe it is more to do with the obliviousness and confidence of the system and the “war on drugs”

Just knowing that Dr. Gonzo was the Mexican-American attorney, politician, novelist and activist in the Chicano Movement, Oscar Zeta Acosta, makes this all so much better. From his Wikipedia page: "He represented the Chicano 13 of the East L.A. walkouts, members of the Brown Berets, Rodolfo Gonzales, and other residents of the East L.A. barrio. Acosta's controversial defenses earned him the ire of the Los Angeles Police Department, who often followed and harassed him. In 1970, [the year before the events of Fear & Loathing] he ran for sheriff of Los Angeles County against Peter J. Pitchess, and received more than 100,000 votes. During the campaign, Acosta was jailed for two days for contempt of court. He vowed that if elected, he would do away with the Sheriff's Department as it was then constituted." He ultimately went missing in Mexico in 1974, less than three years after this trip. He's presumed dead, virtually definitely murdered.

The best part is Dr. Bumquist's lecture almost copies verbatim one of Thompson's earlier articles before he got into developing his trademark style. It's around the time he actually started to transition from objective journalism to Gonzo journalism, though. Because where he seems completely straight in the beginning, describing the Frisco head scene like a 60 year-old who only knew about it from Reefer Madness-type movies, at the end you can catch these cracks in the façade and you realize it was all a giant shitshow on his part. Going back and reading the article over once you know this only makes it that much more hilarious.

In the book (yes, this movie’s an adaptation of a book), the conference speaker’s name is “E. R. Bloomquist.” E. R. Bloomquist was a real dude who wrote a lot of what is said in this scene in a book called “marijuana,” which you could buy on amazon for prices between $3.34 and $30.00. I think the reason why they changed it to L. Ron Bloomquist is exactly what you say: they’re probably making a joke about cops and drug-spokesmen being in a Scientology-esque hive mind. But who really knows.

Marijuana gave me chronic depression and social anxiety when I used to smoke it so I don't know why you put dangers in quote marks as if the possible harmful effects aren't real.

John Taylor yeah I smoked pot every day for first semester grade 12, I’m glad I stopped in second semester (because then I had a tough gym class in the morning) and I’m glad I did, because I was losing my nerve and looking like a clueless stoner way more than I realized. It’s definitely more dangerous to the average teen brain then people like to admit, maybe not psychosis or schizophrenia bad, but still not a good way to set up your future self

The active compounds in marijuana actually shrink and kill tumorous cells, according to multiple different independent studies (Harvard, West Virginia). Also if you're worried about the carcinogenic affects of the smoke, you can always use a vaporiser. :)
