This is one of the many reasons that concourse 60s Ferraris are multiple millions of dollars. Love these videos thank you Tomy.

These cars are rare, desirable, and labor intensive to maintain. They were literally race engines put in street cars, so it all adds up! Thanks for watching.

You taught me a new word: ferrule • \FAIR-ul\ • noun. 1 : a ring or cap usually of metal put around a slender shaft (as a cane or a tool handle) to strengthen it or prevent splitting 2 : a usually metal sleeve used especially for joining or binding one part to another (as pipe sections or the bristles and handle of a brush)

You're welcome!..for that rare time that you may find another use for this word! Thanks for watching!

Lucky enough we have better fuel in Switzerland. No ethanol in it. When I am travelling the States I always look for ethanol free gas, I always hope I can get it. But when the tank is empty, you have to tank what you find. On my simple Chevy I had a brand new carb. After three weeks the needle stuck and the car spilled gas on the collector. That made me nervous as we were in the desert of Nevada in midsummer. Luckily with some persuation with a hammer I could free the needle up.

I’m fortunate to have non-ethanol available as premium unledeaded and not have to pay for $$$ race fuel. The yellow hose manufactured in the 80s wasn’t compatible, but the new stuff is fine. You have to know how to recognize the bad stuff! Thanks for watching.
@MichaelJames-lz7ni7 ай бұрын
Ethanol in modern gasoline is what is causing 'old-style' rubber fuel lines to prematurely fail. Dave Helms from Colorado did the research on this, and developed a line of fuel-line replacement products for metric (Ferrari) fittings.
@tomyangnet7 ай бұрын
The yellow hose made in the 80s was no good. The modern reproduction hose is fine. I think Dave’s stuff is for newer Ferraris. 308 and newer. Thanks for watching.

@@tomyangnet Years ago I heard 12cyl owners caution each other about the yellow hose by Newco as it was a special size or fit and had to have special ends to seal properly. Wow, what a historical pain of a problem! I buy 4ft of 6mm braided and 2 ft of 5mm braided and I have all teh fuel hose for a Dino change
@tomyangnet7 ай бұрын
@@clubdinousa8700 I believe Newco and other suppliers all got their yellow hose from the same supplier, and at one time, it was not compatible with ethanol maybe because it was made in Europe. Nowadays, it seems that supply of hose is gone, but it's good to know the difference just in case an old supplier is trying to sell their old stock. The ferrules have also changed in dimensions through the years, but that knowledge t's only from my doing several of these lines a year. For the DYIer, that only does this once, it can be a challenge! I'm sure you experience the same thing working dozens of Dinos over someone's one car!

I can understand paying the price because the hoses are visible and it adds to the 'cachet' and authenticity . However I had an acquaintance with a 308 who had to replace leaking AC hoses which are mostly hidden in the right hand side body work who insisted on Ferrari OEM hoses(2) which he paid over roughly 1500$ for when duplicates (standard fittings) could have been run up at an AC specialists store for about 156$ ! Now that's being stupid!

I don’t know if the average judge can tell OEM hoses from decent replacements! Thanks for watching!
@clubdinousa87007 ай бұрын
I use modern 8 layer Barrier hose for Dino A/C systems. The diagonal OEM braided is gorgeous but not practical.
@tomyangnet7 ай бұрын
@@clubdinousa8700 I absolutely agree. NOS, or OEM look A/C hose is a problem waiting to happen.
@clubdinousa87007 ай бұрын
@@tomyangnet Concours Judges are not supposed to deduct points for consumables and therefore hose changes from braided to smooth can be justified. For Preservation level Concours classes, braided AC hoses do add that WoW factor to break a tie but I'm not sure that translates into additional points with all FCA level judges

I once heard somebody at a concours make the comment about a 250 GTE, 'Why would they put a cheap piece of yellow garden hose in this car instead of original black rubber hose?' I just turned around and walked away...

I think it would be smart to just put in a yellow rubber hose and spare the money for other important fixes, but the client I guess wants it tip top shape. This is one of the reasons why I think its not salubrious that the cars get that crazy expensive - because the spare parts get bonkers as well and the cars end up not maintained well.
@tomyangnet7 ай бұрын
Ferraris are kind of like owning a million dollar house. When it's time to replace wear items, say an expensive slate roof, the owner shouldn't replace it with something cheaper that does the job. Doing it right will protect their investment, and if they can't afford it, sell it and buy something they can afford to keep! Ferrari parts are expensive for many reasons, but one of them being the suppliers are not selling thousands of feet of fuel line when so few cars use it, so in order for them to remanufacture a specific item with limited demand, the prices go up. Add to this "Ferrari Tax" and parts prices get crazy. Thanks for watching.
@lebojay7 ай бұрын
Testarossa owner here. You have to use the correct parts on classic exotics because the next buyer will insist on it, and deduct from the value accordingly if corners have been cut. So you can’t win. May as well use OEM.
@scuderiapraga68157 ай бұрын
Well I agree with both of you, but if I would like to enjoy the car and not to have a bitter taste after.every minor repair in the car, I would just use the basic stuff that I know works right and perhaps get it to top specs if selling.
@tomyangnet7 ай бұрын
@@lebojay that is largely true, but there are certain instances where the orignal solution is flawed. An example is the Testarossa fuse panel. The original design allows adjacent circuits to short circuit when high load circuits melt the mylar layers. Replacing a bad fuse box with an OEM board (which I believe is no longer available) will fail again. I have not worked on one of these in a while, but I hope they found a solution! Birdman also makes some good upgrades over OEM for the 308 and Boxer era of cars. Thanks for watching!
@tomyangnet7 ай бұрын
@@scuderiapraga6815 the reality is when it's time to sell the car, you'll probably not revisit correcting the repairs, or even remember. As long as you can accept the consequences of price, feel free to do to your as you please, it's your car! Thanks for watching!

I'm good with a Ferrari tax . The higher the better because of tifosi's unshakable believe that the more it costs, the better it is.
