Detailed and Step by Step instructions with a first-person point of view on how to replace the drive belt on a Ferris Z3X mower. Tools needed are a 1/2" socket wrench with an extension (preferably 10" or more), a 9/16 socket, and your replacement belt. Additional tools that would be helpful include a flashlight, a small flathead screwdriver or pocket knife and a cheater bar for leverage (I used a 2ft pipe).
Now I know a lot of you might be wondering what size drive belt fits your mower specifically so refer to your owner's manual for specific belt size or click here to access your specific mowers owner's manual online directly from Ferris (this is absolutely FREE and exactly what I did). All you need is your mowers serial number and you're good to go. Once it comes up I "bookmarked" it on my phone for quick reference in the future. www.ferrismowers.com/na/en_us...
**I have confirmed that the 61” and 72” mowers share the same belt... OEM Part number 5105316 which is 80.79 inches. The belt in the Amazon link provided will fit 61” and 72” without a doubt.
Now then, the mower I'm working on specifically in this video is a 72" deck with a 37HP Vanguard EFI motor but I suspect the drive system should be the same but for most if not all Z3X's mowers. My mower called for a 5/8" wide x 81" length V Belt. On the packaging, this belt is commonly converted to a " 78 ". The packaging of all belts is always 3 numbers less than the true length of the belt...if this conversion doesn't make sense just watch the video for more information on that or click this link here to order one directly - - - amzn.to/3nRNAKP

Entire job can be done on the ground with deck lowered and rear hydro panel pulled off. Relatively easy access to clutch from trim side. Hardest part is reaching to feed belt over hydro fan, and getting clutch plate bolt tight which requires a 1/4" drive 9/16" socket on the top side of bolt located trim side behind exhaust flange. Looks to be about as much hassle doing it with mower lifted as on the ground. I use a quality ratchet strap to pull my tensioners (hooks on to spring spacer/riser). Z3X 61" 37hp Vangaurd w/Oilguard

Glad to hear it’s going to be helpful for you! Just a quick sidenote one thing I’ve come to realize is it’s much easier once you have the drive belt back on to lower the mower back down and access the tensioner pulley for the mower belts from the front of the mowor. It’s easier to put a longer extension, a.k.a. the cheater bar, on it from the front then it is from underneath. I’ve got another video where I show how to swap out the spindles, if you scroll through it you’ll see what I mean.

Also I’ve found it’s much easier to get the deck belt back on when the machine is back on the ground. Just drop the mower deck all the way down and insert the 1/2 wrench on top of the tensioner pulley arm instead of trying to fight it from underneath the mower.
@ktrails
@ktrails 3 жыл бұрын
@@DaisyDukesLandscaping I agree. It was really good to see where everything goes from underneath for the transmission drive belt, but other than needing to fish a few things through from the bottom, much easier working on the mower drive belt from the top. Discovering I'd been sold the wrong manual was golden though :-) (I have an IS700Z.) Once I figured the bracket holding the front stationary spindle needed to be removed, it went pretty well. Well, that and praying my way through it :-)

I just did this on the ground i jacked it up put the rear up on blocks. I the deck belt is easier if you take off the right side from the rear belt cover and roll tge belt off and on. Then when doing the drive belt tensioner i used a ratchet strap on the pulley bolt. I can tell you it was way easier than the cheater bar. Hope this helps

Great video, I have the same mower, How many hours did you have on your unit when the belt needed replaced? Thanks agian
@DaisyDukesLandscaping
@DaisyDukesLandscaping 4 жыл бұрын
I have 500 hours on that mower and this is the second belt I’ve had to replace. In both instances a piece of debris got up in the pulleys and was undetectable until it was too late. Sometimes you can tell somethings wrong with the mower because it doesn’t “feel” right. When that happens trust your gut and give the mower (especially the drive belt and pulleys) a thorough look. Usually you’ll see a stick or something hung up or wedged in the pulley. If you catch it soon enough it won’t do any damage to the belt but if it goes too long it’ll cause it to crack, split, or jump off the pulley. And nine times out of ten If it jumps off the pulley it’s going to get torn up it will be unusable.

If your belt blew maybe you got a sweet gum ball in it or a stone, be sure to check all your pulleys for wiggle or grittiness in the bearings ...and possibly what I did was I don't run at full throttle when I engage the PTO which causes the belt to slip and blow off eventually after a couple hundred hours cause I'm dumb

The hardest part is getting the z3 back on the trailer or truck once the belt snaps, especially when it’s 90 degrees out
@DaisyDukesLandscaping
@DaisyDukesLandscaping 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a FACT!! If it weren’t for the fact I had other mowers it wouldn’t have happened. Same thing goes for getting it up on the lift. I had to use another mower just to get it up the ramps.

How long did it take you to replace the belt?
@DaisyDukesLandscaping
@DaisyDukesLandscaping 8 күн бұрын
The first time it took 30-45 minutes. I’ve replaced it 10 Times since then and it’s much easier than I made it out to be in the video. Couple tips I’ve learned… 1. take the mower deck belt off (and put it back on) from the topside of the machine not working from underneath 2. Only loosen the clutch bracket just a wee bit and hook something to it (like a small ratchet strap) and pull it out then tap it back in with a hammer. If you get the bolt too loose it’s a pain to get to the topside of the bolt to hold it and keep it from spinning. 3. Adjust your spring on the tensioner pulley as needed. The older the spring is the tighter it needs to be to hold the same tension. I’ve got 2000+ hours on the machine and I’m on my third spring. Actually mistakenly replaced the right side hydro because I had no power. Turned out the spring was just bad 🙄 4. You can get away with not using a lift if you jack up the rear of the machine and put it on jackstands and then use a floor jack and lift up the front of the machine and brace it up as well. It’s a little cramped, but it’s doable. Hope this helps!!!

If you’re dead in the water the only place you may be able to find one in stock is NAPA...even then, sometimes they’re a special order and take a few days. If you have time (or you want to buy a few replacements to keep on the trailer...which I recommend) you can order one on amazon. This belt is a next day delivery. Here is a link to one that will fit. In full disclosure I’m an amazon affiliate and this is a link that will earn me a small commission. amzn.to/3nRNAKP Also, I recommend buying at least one of every belt for each mower because sooner or later they all go down (hopefully not at the same time) and it never happens at an ideal time. Hope this helps.

I’d bookmark it on your phone or computer once it pulls up for future reference. www.ferrismowers.com/na/en_us/support/manuals.html Also if you don’t mind let me know if it fits or if it what size yours is so if anyone else in the future has the same question.
