But Mike just had to give his impressions of the incredible Criterion Dungeons, which it seems square is using to gauge what their players think of hard dungeon content akin to M+

Howdy folks. Mike is down at the Dragonflight castle today, and our first big video about our trip to Blizz just went up so suffice to say we've had our hands full. That said, we HAD to talk about the Criterion Dungeons coming to FF14 and Mike getting stomped by our favorite rat. Any folks who were following the progress live on stream, I want to see your best RAT comments. BIG RATJAM. P.S. as you probably saw in the video our new Venat displate is available RIGHT NOW, along with our other FF14 displates for the Black Friday sale through Cyber Monday - we're expecting them to come down once the sale is over so if you've been holding out on getting an Emet plate or any other plate on the site, make sure to use our discount link to get up to 44% off. displate.com/preachgaming?art=619e85e06e135

Lonely little Preach, in a dark dark room. At the other side of the room he spots a pair of eyes, glowing red. Below the glow he can faintly recognize a bulging, muscular frame. Behind the eyes, head, rather fowl in it's nature. If I close my eyes, maybe it goes away little Preach thinks... but curiosity beats him, he takes a peek. And now the frame is even closer. Eyes glowing in more brighter, omnious yellow glow now shares shine with the bright red eyes. Even more scared little Preach closes his eyes again. Only to feel something touching his shoulder. Now little Preach is way too scared ton open his eyes. And then, suddenly, a voice whispers to little Preach's ear.... F U, IT'S ME THE RAT

All it needs is better rewards, and that doesn't even mean stat gear. If it had its own glowy weapons like Ultimate, or some other thing you can flex by the aetheryte in a major city, that would be enough. The content, itself, is mwah.😘👌

@ramblingsofaweirdo no thank you. I feel like the majority of the playerbase will do Variant. People who do Criterion Savage are like the people who do Ultimate--they do it for the challenge and to flex their glowy weapons. I wouldn't be opposed to Criterion (mid tier difficulty between Variant and Savage) being a small part of the gear grind--i.e. maybe it could drop tokens you can use towards current tier Savage-level gear like you get in P5S-P8S. However, even that's a slippery slope because why do 8-man Savage content if you can do 4-man Criterion that awards equal gear? They'd have to limit it to one token per week like 8-man Savage--which isn't the worst idea, because it would give players a reason to do BOTH 8-man content & Criterion. ASS Savage is like DSR, something that the hardcore will do just for the challenge and shiny, rather than chasing BiS. That's what I mean when I say the reward could be better. Currently, you get a title, materia and a flex mount that you can't use while afking in major cities. If it had a unique weapon or piece of armor, I doubt there would have been any complaints, even if it was purely cosmetic. Just something you can flex to show you crushed the hardest 4-man content in the game. Variant is beautiful the way it is, it doesn't need any changes, just more of them please and thank you.😁

The interesting thing about Criterion is that it doesn't feel like an expansion feature like Eureka or Bozja, but a new category of content to be reiterated on for year to come, like Deep Dungeons. If they were to release multiple Criterions every expansion, it will become a new backlog of content, both for casual and high end play.

@TheNCreid
@TheNCreid Жыл бұрын
Regarding the rewards from doing the Criterion dungeons: it's my hope that they could implement a new currency system for this that's universal to the criterion dungeons, similar to how hunts have had the sacks of nuts for the last couple expansions. They could then offer a wider selection of loot - again, like the hunt rewards - that would keep the old criterion dungeons viable. You could start with the usual mix: new glams, mounts, orchestrion rolls, etc. Maybe add in some no longer current mounts or gear sets, such as past PVP rewards that are no longer available. Finally, even if they don't add in new actual gear sets, you could allow the vendor to have the current tomestone Augmented gear upgrades. The catch to this is that they'd need to add that in faster than they do with the hunt. As of right now, we're not going to see the current augment upgrades until 6.3 drops. In this case, I would've expected them to release them as soon as the Criterion dungeon released - perhaps minus the weapon upgrade. I'd also like to see a separate reward for the Savage clear, even if it's just a glam or something. The rewards mentioned above would mean nothing to people who've worked current Savage content, so another reward would be nice to see.
@meriwidget3474
@meriwidget3474 Жыл бұрын
This is what my version of best case would be for this. I don't want it to be tied to gear. But hunts are popular and consistently run, and none of the rewards are tied to player power. Even Eureka and Bozja stay pretty busy. So FF DOES have "grindable" content that works and works well, so they have the ground work there, but they are going to build on this, so I hope it gains popularity.
@InvictusRed1911
@InvictusRed1911 Жыл бұрын
@@meriwidget3474 "none of the rewards are tied to player power" isn't exactly true. People run it because one activity knocks off a bunch of tasks: - capping tomes to get gear - capping currency to get upgrade tokens outside of savage (In "catch up" patches after content is no longer current) This is why older hunt trains are still ran for Sacks of Nuts even when they don't give the latest tomestone.

I think it needs increasing difficulty rather than just ultra easy mode or super hard mode and some kind material reward so that spamming it gives something too, rather than a 1 and done thing. You can see the huge difference in difficulty between normal and savage mode and that really turns the casuals off from even trying the hard mode of this content. Which is how mythic+ does it, mythic 0 is fairly easy but each +1 you do adds damage and health and each +5 adds mechanics (up to a certain point) and each week the mythic+ will rotate an additional dungeon debuff

As a casual who just did the Hamster in normal ASS and then gave up I have to say I did like it as a proof of concept. They certainly can make challenging 4-man content if they want to. I'll also agree with people who say it needs to be more rewarding but then I don't want them to go down the same path as WoW where there's like five different tiers of ilvl rewards depending on your content. Right now FF14 has a nice balance with the "Badge" rewards keeping dungeon roulette queues to a reasonable time and you certainly wouldn't want to introduce something that would compete with that and hurt duty roulette participation.

I think a fair reward would be gear that's equivalent to the current (non-upgraded) tome gear, it'd be a great way to gear alts since it's 10IL's off of savage gear, and if it looks cool people will still want to farm the dungeon a few times to get the full set for their mains as well. The important part would be release timing though, they'd have to come out later in the raid tier around when alliance raids drop, since it would be sort of like a more hardcore catch up system, where you'd bypass the once a week drop that's in alliance raids, in exchange for it being difficult.

For the record, people have been asking for harder dungeons/4-man stuff long before the big WoW exodus, but yes Mythic+ has long been a point of comparison. My own feeling on Criterion is that I feel it leans too much into the bosses. It's not so much a dungeon as just 3 bosses that all have to be beaten in the same lockout. There are only two trash sections which force single pulls due to the damage, and you finish them quickly. Instead of being a new STYLE of content, it instead just feels like a 4-man raid. Single-target boss fights is what FF is designed for and what it's good at, but I was hoping to maybe see a brand new form of higher-end content that utilized the combat system in a new way. Like focusing more on high difficulty trash packs where pulling more doesn't so much just deal impossible damage as increase the amount of mechanics you have to deal with. So now you really have to weigh whether the risk of pulling more is worth the time save.

I feel like the savage fights are that Dark Souls animation of the knight impaling the player who 'complained about it being easier'. That evil mouse impaling you like 'Is THIS too easy for you?' As for the dunegons dropping stuff for gear? I'm on the fence side that says no. Savages are built a specific way for gearing, which you'll in turn get to see eventually. Each wing drops certain tomes, certain peices. And just having a 'one size fits all dungeon' for that sort of eliminates the need to do the multiple raid wings. What I COULD see.. is a means of getting the upgrade materials as sort of a case of running this, instead of your alliance raids for the token the last boss drops to buy the upgrade materials. That, I can see, as it gives people a second venue for getting the materials.

Seems Squenix is really probing how much interest there is for this kind of content - for someone that never really enjoyed M+ in WoW (personally it always felt kinda low effort, recycled content for grind's sake) I like this variation quite a bit. It's actual fresh content and repeatable enough without being meant for a prolonged grind. I think the only issue at the moment are the rewards which are pretty luckluster - I can see Criterion filling some gearing gaps present in the game, but clearly the devs weren't ready to commit any kind of progression to the system before knowing how it would be received All in all it's a pretty great starting point, looking forward to what they plan to do with it

As a casual raider, I'm kinda glad it doesn't give gear. I could type out a whole 7 paragraphs as to why, but the tl;dr is that it's an extra obligation when one of the best things about raiding in FF is the lack of obligations outside of raid! You cap tomes, you turn up to raid night, you're good. I'd like there to be more reason to do it ofc, and I'd love it be easier to get gear (more for alt jobs than for raiding tbh), but gear doesn't feel like the way.

In the last live letter they mentioned a couple more Criterion dungeons being in the works, tentatively scheduled for 6.4 and/or 6.5 (or more likely, 6.45 and 6.55). Given how much Variant SS is steeped in Ul'dah lore, it wouldn't be a stretch to guess that the others will cover unexplored facets of Limsa and Gridania. As for prizes, I don't think we'll see full gear sets from Criterions, but it would be pretty simple to allow players to spend the tokens (potsherds, antique coins, etc) for augmentation items (normally available for tokens farmed from alliance raids) or even rare crafting mats (normally farmed from treasure chest portals). This would allow the new dungeons to work as alternate progression for a couple of different paths already in the game without threatening active raid progression or even having to design any new items.

I think they need to move raid gear lockout to based upon role. Let you get one piece of raid gear per week for up to two roles.. Then you can allow Criterion to lockout once a week. That way you can gear an alternative class easier, plus it lets you choose what you want to do. Do you just do the raid/dungeon and you're done. Do you do the raid twice. Or mix the two. That way you keep the incentive on the raid, but it's not mandatory if you just want to gear one class. Adds variety, helps the alt gearing problem, and keeps the gearing progression roughly the same as now. Not perfect, but I think it makes the most sense..... Or just add glowy weapons/gear transmogs to the dungeons as glamour only items and people would probably love that too.

Regarding gear. If they wanted to exclude current tier gear rewards then personally I would have expected throne mount to be a reward for completing variant and the mouse mount to be a reward for grinding criterion (or random drop), basically switch the two. The mouse is cooler. For savage version I think you should get a title, an adventurer plate, and be able to exchange 2 tokens for the criterion mount. IF they were to reward gear with it I think it would be fine if you could access the current shine, twine, and brine drops (used for upgrading tome gear) and the weapon tomestone (can be exchanged for tome weapon). That would ensure that a true BiS set would only be accessible via savage raiding, but you could get a matching ilevel after a lot of weeks in the criterion dungeons. And if a raider chose to do both they would be able to get their BiS gear a little faster than they would by only raiding savage.
@xXLordYggdrasillXx
@xXLordYggdrasillXx Жыл бұрын
I personally think the rewards we get are fine for the most part. Two mounts, triple triad cards, orchestrion rolls, minions, furnishings, emote, glam, tomestones. All of that distributed over three different difficulty levels with most of the rewards being accessable to most people. Savage only giving a title and basically nothing else is a bit weak, but to be honest, most really hard content is done for the fun of the challenge. Soloing PotD only gives a title as well for example. And the way criterion savage is designed (as in being just a harder version of the normal mode but mechanically identical when the figuring out the mechanics part is by far the most challenging thing about it), I think it mostly exists for the fun of the challenge anyway. My main issues with expecting gear rewards are twofold. Firstly, as I undestand it, criterion dungeons are currently planned for 6.4 and 6.5, so not every criterion dungeon lands on the same point in time in regards to the gear timeline. So it is hard coming up with a definitive "this is the gear you can get out of criterion dungeons" going forward. My second point is that I honestly dont think this content retains difficulty very well. FFXIV fights are always puzzle heavy and once you understand everything and cleared it once, subsequent clears are usually easier. Criterion as it stands now is even more of a puzzle fight than most savage fights. After having beaten it once, futher clears are honestly super easy on the execution part and dont warrant the same level of gear rewards you would get out of savage in my opinion. I can totally understand and support the idea of wanting this to be a stronger part of the overall FFXIV gearing formula, but at the same time I cant see this ever giving us a real alterative to a complete BiS set. Maybe having it give some sort of token on a weekly basis that you can trade in for an accessory or maybe an upgrade item after a few weeks of reclears would be fine, but everything else would push it a bit too far for this type of content in my opinion.

the obvious choice here would be to offer tome gear upgrade materials as drops. So savage raiders have a better way to upgrade their tome loot and casual players have more than just the 24 mans on off patches to catch up in item level. Drop one piece per boss, one drop per week. I would like to see this stuff drop specifically current max ilvl, but alternate, accessories. In particular, an alternate source of rings, which is one of the pieces of gear most annoying to deal with gearing up because you get 1 with great stats and 1 with mediocre stats (and occasionally you find it better to get an unupgraded tome ring over the raid ring, or the upgraded crafted ring with raid ring over a tome ring, because of just horrid stats). With just accessories, it is comparatively optional, but gives you reasons to do it if you want to min-max. More sources of alternate gear is borderline needed right now to allow multi-spec and whatnot. This is also something they did in ages past that worked quite well at the time (Specifically back in ARR, where you could get max ilvl rings from certain extremes or that one bonus boss in that 24-man). An alternative would be the middle difficulty (comparable to savage) gives savage-quality rings, while the highest gets treated like ultimates with level syncing and it gives ultimate-level weapons (so comparable to current end of savage), but with different stats that the savage weapon. Optional, and largely just for glam, but on content it gets you a really good weapon, potentially faster than normal raiding.

Awesome vid, made me laugh to see my Scripe TTS in there XD. On the gear, BiS is a mixture of Augmented tome gear and savage drops. The savage tier drops the crafting mats for augmenting tome gear and is the only way to get this in the patch that savage is released (alliance raid allows you to buy them from a vendor in the patch after). Maybe clearing a few times gives you enough to buy the mat to upgrade tome gear? This would allow people who don't raid savage tier to get some BiS slots complete and push higher ilvl earlier, without removing the specific BiS gearing which is done in savage. With gearing being locked to one savage clear per week maybe this is a separate currency which you only get once per week from a clear on the new savage releases?

I don't have a lot of time to play, so I thought criterion dungeons might be something I could do with a few FC members that would be something more difficult than just normal dungeons and more time friendly than raids. And then I watched Mike and the boys do it, and realized that was never going to happen 🤭. I'm not complaining, though. The Variant dungeons were fun, and I've got lots of other things to do. I am very curious to see how these will be changed in the future, including the rewards. They've certainly got a lot of feedback.

I'm thinking maybe some sort of token system, similar to what PvP has put up, so they can spread out rewards... Maybe make it like an achievement that you build to (5 tokens gets you the new frame for your profile pic, then 10 gets you this cool head piece or an item that can be traded for gear) but make it so there's a limit to how many of these tokens can be earned per reset. Therefore, you can reclear it for a reward still, but you don't have to/can't spam it to get everything all at once

I think if they want to do gear rewards without having to add another level of gear to balance. They could put Ornate Crafted gear as a reward, it's tradable so makes the content worthwhile for money makers, and gives a set of gear that's somewhat on par with raiding gear without overshadowing it. And if they do want to do a currency then just have a vendor that let's you buy the ornate crafted gear.
@IceAokiji303
@IceAokiji303 Жыл бұрын
It could indeed use some added rewards. But what I don't want to see is any BiS gear, not a single piece. I want to be able to get my Savage BiS from just a combination of doing the Savage raids with my static, and doing whatever for tomestones, no other specific content type necessary. Prog gear / slightly weaker alternatives though, a la Extremes and their weapon drops? That could certainly work. I could see something like "it drops visually different Savage gear with the same offstats and everything, but 5 item levels lower" (could even give them some Criterion-specific bonuses that make them BiS in there in particular). That might still leave the danger of healers having to get rings from there due to Piety shenanigans, but that could be addressed by making sure the tome ring is never suboptimal.

Yeah I don't think it was ever meant to be like M+ knowing FFXIV's propensity against treadmills and grinds - though rewards are always the last things to be finalized, and I doubt the devs wanted to lock gear progression behind a system like Criterion before knowing how the playerbase would receive it. It will be interesting to see in what direction they end up with this type of content depending on the feedback they get, I could definitely see Criterion also filling some gearing gaps in the future

A reasonable reward for critereon savage would have been as an alternative route to farm gear upgrades, the same way alliance raids do. It's hard enough that it wouldn't be just giving those rewards to undeserving players, and it can be introduced a while later in the tier so it's not a day-1 easy way to get good gear. Personally, I was kinda disappointed with the structure of the duty and was hoping for something more along the lines of a gradually increasing, sliding-scale but long-form sort of difficulty that people could grind through. Less short-and-sweet difficult boss fights and more meat-grinder-y deep-dungeon style play where you get swamed by a crapload of strong mobs. I guess I was just hoping for a different style of difficult content. I won't get too hung up about the rewards if we get a cool new challenge... but we didn't. Let's put it this way: Handling wall-to-wall pulls is a useful skill for a group to be able to have, but ultimately in casual content even the highest level dungeons don't really make good tanks and healers sweat at all. My group for critereon is made up of people that have done multiple ultimates and savage tiers. If our tank plays warrior, our healer can literally use no healing at all in the current expert roulette. In expert roulettes we nuke down groups of mobs in no time at all, and our tank and healer know how to use their mitigations and such with great detail and prowess, but it's very, very rare that these skills are every really put to the test. We will pull as fast as the dungeon will allow, as many mobs as physically possible; the damage they output is simply not a problem; the mobs die too fast and the healer+tank are too effective in using the tools available to them. Will bosses in critereon hit harder than DSR or TEA or UCOB? No? Of course not. Will the mechanics be more challenging than savage or ultimate? Not really. Give us a new style of content. Give us giant hordes of hard-hitting enemies to wade through. Repeatable, procedural dungeons that crank up the damage *and* the number of enemies by like 5-10% every time with a strict time-limit to prevent people from pulling only a small number at a time. Part of the problem here, too, is that the difficulty increase between critereon and savage critereon isn't that huge. The rewards? Eh. The mount is okay, I guess. Am I trying to get it? Nope. If I want hard bosses with challenging mechanics, I do savage or ultimate. I was hoping critereon would bring something new to the table, not more of the same.

I'm looking forward into your deep dive in to Star Wars, the Old Republic. I'm interested to see what you think of the game. it is different than it was at launch 11 years ago. personally I prefer the vanilla version over this, but it's not bad. EA Bioware have always reused content. unlike WoW, previous Operations (what raids are called there) aren't obsolete when a new expansion comes out, it will drop relevant loot, but the best stuff comes from the new stuff naturally. I use to love that game, but now I don't think I could get back into it. I recently tried replaying the agent story, which is the best in the game mind you, but I got bored very quickly, but I must have completed that story 10 times now, I just wanted to try the game again after a while but I got bored. Second Coil savage is much different than later savage content. Coils was already at "savage" difficulty on release, so when they released the harder savage mode for second coils it was entirely a bragging rights thing and much more tuned than later Savage content. Savage became the standard hard mode in HW and on.

Maybe giving out another weekly Tomestone Upgrade Token from the Criterion Savage stuff would be adequate, and have it come out before the 24m raid of the same tier. And beef up its tomestone handout. Heck maybe even make it 3-4 weeks to get a weapon upgrade token really early outside of savage.

Judging by SE creating an entirely new system including flexible AI and story potential, we will most likely get a Variant/Criterion dungeon every now and then. The variant dungeon alone had huge lore drops about missing pieces for Sil'dih, so it would be great to have more of that for Ampdaor/Gelmorra in Gridania or even Mhach and Skalla are amazing contenders. I really hope it's not a one-off feature. As a completionist I got the clear, but the throne isn't worth the 25 runs if the mount itself doesn't drop. The other rewards were underwhelming as well. My team felt the same way. A more tedious and subjectively tougher challenge was going prepping for Baldesion Arsenal to get the Ozma mount, but that one was entirely unique with animations befitting the difficulty. The throne and lame banner housing item are just not doing anything for alot of people, same as Mike. This issue happened in the past with a ton of people wanting to clear older content as BLU for the Morbol mount, while I barely see people go into the Omega tier as BLU, since you only get a mid title from it and nothing interesting. Hopefully that will change with the next tier aka Eden BLU. And I hope we will get a bigger variety of content in general, if not for endgame gear, at least add some cool glamour or mounts, this will always get people to do content!

From what I briefly read on the JP Forums in translation the discussion seemed more centered around the content itself - particular mechanics, dungeon design - vs English discussions which concern whether we are going to get an "alternate gearing system" for our alts. Caveat: this is merely anecdoctal and based on what I read a few weeks ago. Which begs the question of what it was western players wanted to begin with.
@DawnAfternoon
@DawnAfternoon Жыл бұрын
@@qamarqammar7629 Precisely that, alternate gearing routes, or failing that: system to gear alt roles faster. This game lives on the onus that you can play any job you want in one character. However this does not apply to raiding since you are forced to funnel all of your gear upgrade to one job -- Which wouldn't be the end of the world if the PF didn't lock out everyone whose iLV is behind the curve, which includes: you guessed it, your 19 other classes that you didn't main. Once you've picked Ninja, you will only play Ninja. Swapping classes will lock you out of PF.

I'd say it just drops a cosmetic that's for bragging rights that you could wear all the time so people know you're a top tier hardcore raider. It has no progression elsewhere just exclusive for the Raiders cosmetics. To incentivize people to do it more than once maybe you have to collect pieces to put it together. So you have to run it a few times to get all the pieces. So if the person actually wants that item and the prestige amongst the raiding community than they'll have to start practicing.

I personally would be fine with sub savage raid gear from this just as a way to work on a character outside of raid night. But they could honestly have this give raid loot as long as they always stagger the release in the .5 patch after the raid, since by then most of the serious raiders have already farmed their sets and won't care about this stuff outside of getting a clear. The main scenario you want to avoid is one that forces people to run this for gear to help get early savage clears, because then you'll run into the WoW problem of having too many different sources of gear that people have to cram into the first week or two of content. I like the fact that the game doesn't have insane ilvl grinds to content with. But at the same time, I would like some other avenue to improve a character outside of the savage raid. Stuff like the relic and the odd patches help a lot, but I've noticed since my static from last tier blew up, I've had much less to do in the game this patch. Which is a shame. I feel like there is a middle ground to be struck somewhere that won't feel like it goes over the line.

Honestly, I have a hard time with this problem. I LOVE MMO’s I’ve been playing them since I was like 8 years old and they are my favorite style of game. But now that I am older and have a job in which I do a swing shift that changes the days I work each week and have to also work nights I cannot commit time to raiding, but I’ve always loved class sets in wow and it’s a feel bad that you can’t get them in M+, (especially when tier would DRASTICALLY change the power of your character and prior to BFA the SWAG that came with it) my fix would be a slightly scaled down version or completely changed for M+/criterion where you still have that “this gear has unique effects that no other gear can give you that you have to grind for, and has a nice consice aesthetic design FOR MY CLASS/JOB” one for savage/raiding and one for dungeons/criterion that still requires time and effort but also allows those of us that cannot justify to 7/9 other players to let us fill every week we can fit them into my schedule

To get higher level gear this makes it feel like you can only focus on one job this late, no catch-up mech or alt. to these. If they did the above, you could gear one job to 618 with less problems doing duty roulettes, book, and this as you also do savage and deal with poor game rng.

The solution would be a weekly item that you can trade for gear of the ilvl between tomestone and upgraded tomestone. Say, if tomestome gear is 490, and upgraded dear is 500, the gear could be 495. In SOME cases, these pieces of gear might still be BIS, but it won't completely obscure Savage raiding.

I think it's fine if it's harder than 8-man savages, and it locks out to one item a week That'd make it a viable option for gearing BUT 8-man would still much more efficient once you get the clears and can reliably repeat it. My only worry would be statics acquiring the mindset that you *have* to get your weekly criterion clear otherwise you are dragging the static down :/
