asimplyfab.life/ This is a quick fix for the Land Rover Defender Headlight switch that went a little Pete Tong on us while underway on our road trip. It is a temporary hack, but did involve removing the steering column shrouds in order to access the switch itself;
What transpired is that I could switch it on (to marker lights of headlights, but was unable to switch it off again. The switch wouldn't move back again. This may not seem like an issue if you're travelling by day - just leave them off - but you need the lights for long tunnels, mist and rainy weather. Not exactly an ideal situation.
When I took it apart I saw how simple it is - as you would expect - and also the cause of the problem which was the small ball bearing that is pressure fitted with a spring in order to stop at the detents for marker, headlights and 'off''. This ball bearing was not allowing the switch to return to the off position. A bit of fiddling with a small screwdriver let us resume progress, but I needed something a little easier than having to dismantle the whole shroud every time.
Enter a little plastic packaging for some electrical connectors. Supple enough to squeeze in there yet pliable enough to use the switch. By inserting the piece of plastic it meant that the ball bearing would not come fully out of the switch moulding and would return when moving the switch to off. Result!
It does mean driving around with the whole wiring loom exposed. Not a big deal because there really isn't much to a Land Rover wiring loom, to begin with. Lights, wipers and a horn. And that's about it! Refreshingly simple and basic.
All of this came about because we are on our road trip through Europe at the moment so we don't have a fixed address for any spare parts deliveries. Then again - if it's stupid but it works, it ain't stupid!
Thanks for watching!

So waht do you do 'in the field' to keep your Landy rolling? Here's my simple hack to keep the lights pointed in the right direction😅

By chance I was working at the same position today... With the TD5 you can take off and back of both plastic covers without taking the steering wheel off. For reassembling: First fiddle in the top one, then the bottom one. Screw the bottom part with the two small screws to the indicator assembly part and later all the 4 long screws. But maybe TDI is different. And cool fix to the problem - learned that now, it'll maybe be come along one day... Cheers and keep on rolling Axel

@@axelcordes On the strength of your comment I went back and had another go. My trouble was i had the steering wheel turned 90 degrees! So thank you for that, sir! 🙏It is now looking more stylish with everything in place, the upshot of which is that the bungee cord has been reassigned duty elsewhere. Keep rollin' Cheers 🤘😎

I once fixed a volvo carburettor using a cable clip and a screw from a cigarette socket... working for 3 years and as far as I know still is... as for my Defender ... bluetack for window leak... command strips for headlining.. door insulation strip to seal front vents....oh the joy!

Good fix I bought two switches last time I changed it, as well as 2 relays when the one for the headlights gave up working One of the reasons I love the Defender: a few screws, some bobs and bits and it works again; Imagine troubleshooting not working headlights on a modern car; I had a similar problem on a 2009 Citroën C5 and the friendly dealer anticipated changing one or two headlights (700euros a piece) and the switch -> between 900 and 1700euros; At the end it was just a corroded connector at the headlight itself Contact spray and a few hours of cursing

Your Citroen story reminded me again that all dealers are just sharks - nothing more. I mentioned elsewhere that we were presented with €800 bill for the first Puma service (€27/ltr for engine oil). You can't make this stuff up! 😂😆🤣 The older Landys are more simple, obviously, not ALL good - but at least you can fix it yourself😉😅

Changing the headlight fuse while driving down the road in my Dodge pickup freaked out my soon to be wife. But I'd done it so many times I could do it with my eyes closed. She eventually came to love me for my resourcefulness.

I had to drill a hole in the interior lighting lens to let the water out without touching the electrics in there. Where the water came from?? A cloud sure.
